Sulphuric acid was intercalated in mesophase pitch based graphite fiber (Thornel P100 of Amoco), PAN based graphite fiber (M40 of Thoray) and PAN based carbon fiber (T300 ofThoray, TZ307 of Taekwang in Korea) by 0.4wt% CrO3/H2SO4 solution. The degree of crystallization of fibers increased P100, M40, TZ307, T300 fiber in order and their d002 values were 3.384, 3.424, 3.470, 3.493$\AA$, respectively. After intercalation P100 fiber formed 1 stage compound whose d002 value was 3.994$\AA$(d001=7.988$\AA$). Other fibers showed (002) reflection belonging to their 1 stage comound and prinstine fiber.

Since MFC(macro-fiber composite) transducer has been developed, many researchers have tried to apply this transducer on SHM(structural health monitoring), because it is so flexible and durable that it can be easily embedded to various kinds of structures. The objective of this paper is to figure out the benefits and feasibility of applying MFC transducers to guided wave technique. For this, we have experimentally tested the performance of MFC patches as transmitter and sensors for excitation and reception of guided waves on the thin aluminum alloy plate. In order to enhance the signal accuracy, we applied the FIR filter for noise reduction as well as used STFT(short-time Fourier transform) algorithm to image the guided wave characteristics clearly. From the results, the guided wave generated based on MFC showed good agreement with its theoretical dispersion curves. Moreover, the ultrasonic Lamb wave techniques based on MFC patches in pitch-catch manner was tested for detection of surface notch defects of which depths are 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% of the aluminum plate thickness. Results showed that the notch was detectable well when the notch depth was 10% of the thickness or greater.
Pitch precursors were synthesized from coal tar(CT) and pyrolysis fuel oil(PFO, petroleum residue oil) at relatively low temperature of $250^{\circ}$, in the presence of horontrifluorideidiethyletherate complex(BFDE) as a catalyst and nitrobenzene(NB) as a co-catalyst. The softening point, nitrogen content and carbon yield increased with an increase of concentration of NB. The pitch precursors with good spinnability were prepared by removing the volatile components through $N_2$ blowing. The precursor pitches were spun through a circular nozzle, stabilized at $310^{\circ}$ and finally carbonized at $1000^{\circ}$. The optically anisotropic structure formed at the absence of NB was changed into isotropic structure, showing a decrease in size of the flow domain. The hollow carbon fiber could be prepared in the process of stabilization. The results proposed that the morphology of carbon materials could be controlled by changing the concentration of catalyst and/or co-catalyst and/or stabilization condition that affect on the mobility of molecules during carbonization.
The prime objective of this research was to study the influence of hot-pressing pressure and matrix-to-reinforcement ratio on the densification of short-carbon-fiber-reinforced, randomly oriented carbon/carbon-composite. Secondary objectives included determination of the physical and mechanical properties of the resulting composite. The 'hybrid carbon-fiber-reinforced mesophase-pitch-derived carbon-matrix' composite was fabricated by hot pressing. During hot pressing, pressure was varied from 5 to 20 MPa, and reinforcement wt% from 30 to 70. Densification of all the compacts was carried at low impregnation pressure with phenolic resin. The effect of the impregnation cycles was determined using measurements of microstructure and density. The results showed that effective densification strongly depended on the hot-pressing pressure and reinforcement wt%. Furthermore, results showed that compacts processed at lower hot-pressing pressure, and at higher reinforcement wt%, gained density gradually during three densification cycles and showed the symptoms of further gains with additional densification cycles. In contrast, samples that were hot-pressed at moderate pressure and at moderate reinforcement wt%, achieved maximum density within three densification cycles. Furthermore, examination of microstructure revealed the formation of cracks in samples processed at lower pressure and with low reinforcement wt%.

Spinnable pitches and carbon fibers were successfully prepared from petroleum or coal pyrolysis residues. After pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO), slurry oil, and coal tar were simply filtered to eliminate the solid impurities, the characteristics of the raw materials were evaluated by elemental analysis, 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MALDI-TOF-MS), and so on. Spinnable pitches were prepared for melt-spinning carbon fiber through a simple distillation under strong nitrogen flow, and further vacuum distillation to obtain a high softening point. Carbon fibers were produced from the above pitches by single-hole melt spinning and additional heat treatment, for oxidization and carbonization. Even though spinnable pitches and carbon fibers were processed under the same conditions, the melt-spinning and properties of the carbon fiber were different depending on the raw materials. A fine carbon fiber could not be prepared from slurry oil, and the different diameter carbon fibers were produced from the PFO and coal tar pitch. These results seem to be closely correlated with the initial characteristics of the raw materials, under this simple processing condition.
In this work, phenolic resins containing conductive carbon fillers, such as, petroleum coke, carbon black, and graphite, were used to improve the surface heating elements by impregnating a pitch-based carbon paper. The influence of conductive carbon fillers on physicochemical properties of the carbon paper was investigated through electrical resistance measurement and thermal analysis. As a result, the surface resistance and interfacial contact resistivity of the carbon paper were decreased linearly by impregnating the carbon fillers with phenol resins. The increase of carbon filler contents led to the improvement of electrical and thermal conductivity of the carbon paper. Also, the heating characteristics of the surface heating element were examined through the applied voltage of 1~5 V. With the applied voltage, it was confirmed that the surface heating element exhibited a maximum heating characteristic of about $125.01^{\circ}C$(5 V). These results were attributed to the formation of electrical networks by filled micropore between the carbon fibers, which led to the improvement of electrical and thermal properties of the carbon paper.

It is well known that stiffness of composites depends on layup sequence of CFRP(carbon fiber reinforced plastics) laminates because the layup of composite laminates influences their properties. Ultrasonic NDE of composite laminates is often based on the backwall echoes of the sample. A pair of such transducers was mounted in a holder in a nose-to-nose fashion to be used as a scanning probe on composites. Miniature potted angle beam transducers were used (Rayleigh waves in steel) on solid laminates of composites. Experiments were performed to understand the behavior of the transducers and the nature of the waves generated in the composite (mode, wave speed, angle of refraction). C-scan images of flaws and impact damage were then produced by combining the pitch-catch probe with a portable manual scanner known as the Generic Scanner ("GenScan"). The pitch-catch signal was found to be more sensitive than normal incidence backwall echo of longitudinal wave to fiber orientation of the CFRP composites, including low level porosity, ply waviness, and cracks. Therefore, it is found that the experimentally Rayleigh wave variation of pitch-catch ultrasonic signal was consistent with numerical results and one-side ultrasonic measurement might be very useful to detect the defects.
In order to discuss the engineering properties of carbon fiber reinforced cement composites with silica fume and silica powder, experimental studies on the CFRC were carried out. The types of fiber used which are in CFRC are PAN-based carbon fiber and Pitch-based carbon fiber. To examine the effects of types, Lengths, contents of carbon fibers and matrices, their properties of fresh and hardened CFRC were tested: According to the test results, the process technology of lightweight CFRC is developed and their optimum mix proportions are successfully proposed. Also, it can be conclueded that the reinforcement of carbon fiber is considerably effective in improving tensile strength, flexural strength, toughness and loss of shrinkage of CFRC compared with conventional mortar.
The mechanical properties of fiber reinforced porous concrete for use as a planting material were investigated in this study. Changes in physical and mechanical properties, subsequent to the addition of carbon fiber and silica fume, were studied. The effects of recycled aggregate were also evaluated. The applicability as planting work concrete material was also assessed. The results showed that there were no remarkable changes in the void and strength characteristics following the increase in proportion of recycled aggregate. Also, the mixture with 10% silica fume was found to be the most effective for strength enforcement. The highest flexural strength was obtained when the carbon fiber was added with $3\%$. It was also noticed that PAN-derived carbon fiber was superior to Pitch-derived ones in view of strength. The evaluation of its usage for vegetation showed that the growth of plants was directly affected by the existence of covering soil, in case of having the similar size of aggregate and void.

In order to discuss the mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymer impregnated cement composties with silica powder, experimental studies on CFRC were carried out. The types of fiber used which are in CFRC are PAN-based carbon fiber and Pitch-based carbon fiber. To examine the effects of types, length, contents of carbon fibers and matrices, their properties of fresh and hardened CFRC were tested. According to the test results, compressive, tensile flexural strength of polymer impregnated CFRC were remarkably increased more than that of air cured and autoclaved CFRC. Also, polymer impregnated CFRC were considerably effective in improving thoughness, freezing-thaw resistance and loss of shrinkage compared with air cured and autoclaved CFRC.
