Ring and groove wear may not be a problem in most current automotive engines. However, a small change in ring face and groove geometry can significantly affect the lubrication characteristics and ring axial motion. This in turn can cause to change inter-ring pressure, blow-by and oil consumption in an engine. Therefore, by predicting the wear of piston ring face, ring groove and cylinder bore altogether, the changed ring end gap and the changed volume of gas reservoir can be calculated. Then the excessive oil consumption can be predicted. Being based on the calculation of gas flow amount by the theory of piston ring dynamics and gas flow, and the calculation of oil film thickness and friction force by the analysis of piston ring lubrication, the calculation theory of oil amount through top ring gap into combustion chamber will be set. This is estimated as engine oil consumption. Furthermore, the wear theories of ring, groove and cylinder bore are included. Then the each amount of wear is to be obtained. The changed oil consumption caused by the new end gap and the new volume of oil reservoir around second land, can be calculated at some engine running interval. Meanwhile, the wear amount and oil consumption occurred during engine durability cycle are compared with the calculated values. Next, the calculated amount of oil consumption and wear are compared with the guideline of each part's wear and oil consumption. So, the timing of part repair and engine life cycle can be predicted in advance without performing engine durability test. The wear data of rings and grooves are obtained from three engines before and after engine durability test. The calculated wear data of each part are turn out to be at the lower bound of aver-aged test values or a little below.

Friction between piston-ring assembly and cylinder wall of a spark ignition engine was evaluated under various engine operating conditions utilizing a grasshopper linkage system. The friction force was estimated by the force balance relation at the small end of connecting rod. Three forces were chosen to be measured for the objective. They were gas pressure inside the cylinder, inertia force of the piston-ring assembly, and the force exerted by the connecting rod. These forces were measured by a piezo type pressure sensor, an accelerometer and strain gauges, respectively. Comparisons were made with the frictional force evaluated by the conventional method where the assumption of constant rotational speed of engines was adopted. Due to the variation of rotational speed of engines, the conventional method was found to lead to a large error in the evaluation of the frictional force.
Wear and scuffing tests were conducted using friction and wear measurement of piston rings and cylinder blocks in low friction diesel engine. The frictional forces, wear amounts and cycles to scuffing in boundary lubricated sliding condition were measured using the reciprocating wear tester. The cylinder blocks were used as reciprocating specimens, and the piston rings with several coatings were used as fixed pin. Several coatings were used such as DLC, TiN, Cr-ceramic and TiAlN in order to improve the tribological characteristics. From the tests wear volume of piston ring surfaces applied various coatings were compared. During the tests coefficients of friction were monitored. Test results showed that DLC coatings showed good tribological properties. TiN and Cr-ceramic coated rings showed good wear resistance properties but produced high friction.
The frictional behaviors of Cermets/Cr-Ceramics and Cu-Al coatings of piston ring were investigated. Friction tests were carried out by pin-on-disk test and materials properties of coating layer were analyzed by nano indentation tester. The effect of surface roughness of cylinder liner on the friction coefficient was analyzed. This study provided tribological data of hard and soft piston ring coatings against cylinder liner. The surface roughness does exert an influence on the average friction coefficient, with smoother surfaces generally yielding lower friction coefficients. In case of hard-coating, the scratch depth, width and pile-up height had close relationship with hardness. So the scratch width, depth and pile-up height increases with decreasing friction coefficient. But in case of soft-coating, the friction coefficients are strongly dependent on the morphological characteristics such as, scratch depth, width, pile-up height and elastic modulus.

It is important to understand the friction characteristics between piston-ring assembly and cylinder wall for the friction loss reduction as well as the solution of problem such as scuffing wear and oil consumption. A new system was developed for the piston-ring assembly friction force measurement. This system was applied to the friction force measurement to find its functional relationship with variables such as engine speed, oil viscosity, and engine load. The friction mean effective pressure(fmep) was found to have a linear relationship with$(\vpsilon{U})^{0.42}$ under motering and with$(\vpsilon{U})^{0.45}$ under firing operations, where $\vpsilon$ is the kinematic oil viscosity and U is mean piston speed.

In order to improve engine performance and its reliability it is very important to find the friction force between piston-ring assembly and cylinder wall in engine operating conditions. A new system was developed for the piston-ring assembly friction force measurement. This system had a relatively high fundamental frequency at 884 Hz and a fine resolution of 0.5N in friction force measurement. Comparing with existing floating liner systems this systems required small installation space and at the same time alleviated the system noise problem induced by the thrust and slap impulse forces.

Lubricational characteristics at the interface between the piston ring and the cylinder liner are considered in this paper. To verify that surface shape and operating conditions of the engine can affect the state of lubrication, the changes of the minimum film thickness and friction force are calculated with various conditions. Oil starvation and open-end boundary condition are used to determine computational boundaries as reported on previous paper for lubrication analysis for the piston ring. From this analysis, it can be found that lubricational characteristics are seriously affected by degree of oil starvation, surface shape and operating conditions.

Approximately 30 to 70 % of the mechanical losses in a reciprocating engine are contributed by the friction at the piston ring-cylinder interface. The friction characteristics of the piston ring during engine operation is known to as mixed lubrication experimentally. The mixed lubrication models based on the Average Reynolds Equation have been used by this time in order to study the tribological performance of the ring. However, the Average Reynolds Equation contains the expected value term(${\bar{h}}_r$) of local film thickness as well as nominal film thickness(h), so that the work of numerically solving ${\bar{h}}_r$ must be included to obtain the pressure in the oil film. The process of solving ${\bar{h}}_T$ causes a greater multiplying in the numerical solution. In this paper the mixed lubrication analysis using the Simplified Average Reynolds Equation in the piston ring is presented. This equation has only h as oil film thickness term. Therefore the tedious numerical procedure required to obtain ${\bar{h}}_T$ is not needed, and also, computation time can be reduced.
In order to assure the quality of the bent axis design axial piston pumps driven by tapered pistons, it is necessary to know the characteristics of force applied to tapered pistons and the mechanism for driving the tapered pistons. Since they are able to perform both reciprocating and spinning motions in cylinder block, it is difficult to understand the driving mechanismand-tomeasure the forces applied to tapered pistons experimentally In the present study, the theoretical mechanism for driving the tapered pistons is studied by use of the geometric method. The driving area of the tapered pistons is measured by measuring the strain of a cylinder forced against a tapered piston using an electric strain gauge and a slip ring. The forces applied to tapered pistons is also investigated with the change of discharge pressure and the rotational speed. As a results of this investigation, it is concluded that the cylinder block is driven by one tapered piston in a limited area and the driving area is changed due to space angle of the tapered pistons and the swivel angle of the cylinder block. It is also observed that the force applied to tapered pistons increases as the discharge pressure and the rotational speed increase.

In order to clarify the final process of oil consumption, the distribution and flow of oil through each ring were visualized by induced fluorescence method. Motoring and firing test were performed in a single cylinder research engine with transparent cylinder liner. The appropriate calibration techniques were used to solve the unstability of induced light intensity as well as to know the relation of the oil film thickness and output signal. Oil behavior was also observed at dynamic state by high speed CCD camera. By analyzing the oil film thickness converted from the photographed image, it was observed that the main route of oil transport through each ring is the end gap under the usual operating condition, low engine speed and low load condition. Oil film thickness is observed to be irregular and tend to move in a body horizontally at a given piston land. And it is also found that oil flows through oil ring gap so quickly that it can be observed in a single cycle, but it flows so slowly through top and 2nd compression rings that it takes quite a long time to detect the flow.
