This paper reports on the effects of crankshaft offset on the engine friction. The effects of crank offset are investigated through the theoretical analysis. In this study, the mathematical models are presented fer evaluationg the friction level of each engine parts. Crank offset influences on the side force acted on the piston pin and sliding speed of piston. Crank offset is very effective to reduce the piston skirt friction. With application of crank offset, total engine friction decreases at low engine speed, but that increase as engine speed increases.

A composite piston with a crown made of steel and a skirt made of NCI is used in a marine diesel engine, which has a maximum firing pressure of over 180 bar and a high thermal load. In the fatigue design of the composite piston, the fatigue is influenced by factors such as the load type, surface roughness, and temperature; further, the distribution ratio of the firing force from the crown to the skirt is important for optimizing the design of the crown and skirt. In this study, the stress gradient method was used to consider the effect of the load type. The temperature field on the piston was predicted by cocktail-shaking cooling analysis, and influence of high temperature on fatigue strength was investigated. The load transfer ratio and contact pressure were optimized by design of the surface shape and accurate tolerance analysis. Finally, the cooling performance and durability design of the composite piston were verified by performing a long-term prototype test.
The pressure distribution between the piston pad and the cylinder wall is analyzed to reduce the friction and to get the dynamic stability in the low friction piston. The calculated results indicate that the rectangular pad may reduce the friction in comparison to the square one. And the low friction piston can be stabilized when the pressure difference between the top and bottom of the piston skirt is very small.
The effects of recirculated exhaust gas on the wear of cylinder liner and piston were experimentally investigated by a two-cylinder, four cycle, indirect injection diesel engine operating at 75% lo ad and 1600 rpm. For the purpose of comparison between the wear rates of the two cylinders with and without EGR, the recirculated exhaust gas was sucked into one of two cylinders after the soot in exhaust emissions was removed by an intentionally designed cylinder-type scrubber equipped with 6 water injectors(A water injector has 144 nozzles of 1.0 mm diameter), while only the fresh air was inhaled into the other cylinder. These experiments were carried out with the fuel injection timing fixed at 15.3$^{\circ}$ BTDC. It was found that the mean wear rate of cylinder liner with EGR was greater in the measurement positions of the second half than those of the first half, that the mean wear rate without EGR was almost uniform regardless of measurement positions, and that the wear rate of piston skirt with EGR increased a little bit, but the piston head diameter increased, rather than decreased, owing to soot adhesion and erosion wear, and especially larger with EGR.
Piston slap is one of the sources producing engine block surface vibration and mechanical noise. To analyze piston slap-induced vibration, a realistic but simple model is proposed and verified experimentally. A piston is modeled by 3 degree of freedom system and an impact point between piston skirt and cylinder wall by 2 degree of freedom system. Numerical simulation estimates impact forces of piston in cylinder, and the engine block surface vibration response is predicted by the convoluton of the impact forces with measured impulse responses. Experimental verification on the predicted response has been also performed by using a commercial 4-cylinder diesel engine. the predicted and experimental vibration responses confirm that the suggested model is practically useful.

This paper describes a simulation of secondary motion of piston assemblies using PISDYN by Ricardo. Motions of the piston, pin, rod and skirt are separately calculated, by integrating equations of motion for individual components and dynamic degrees of freedom. The effects of engine speed at full load and pin offsets on the piston assembly secondary motions, forces and friction were investigated in parametric study for 4-cylinder gasoline engine. Results show that lateral displacement and friction loss of the piston increase as a function of engine speed. The lateral motion of the piston is affected by the change in pin offset. The minimum friction loss for the condition of 4800rpm WOT occurs at a pin offset of 1.6mm.

The mono steel forged piston was improved a mechanical strength of an aluminum piston and reduced the weight of a articulated piston. The mono steel forged piston was composed of forged crown part and forged skirt part and was completed by friction welding process of two forged parts. Forging process analysis and friction welding analysis was done by finite element simulation using numerical package DEFORM. The preform shape and the initial billet dimension were decided by maximum stress of the die, amount of the flash and filling of die. The upset length of friction welding variable was decided by the shape of the flash that was created by friction welding analysis. Through this research, we developed a forging process of the mono steel forged piston, and decided the design variables of friction welding.
The piston engine is an essential component in automobiles. Since the piston is used in a high temperature and high pressure environment, the piston needs to be manufactured to achieve high strength and high durability. In addition, cost reduction is also an important consideration. In conventional forging, an additional heat treatment after hot forging is necessary to ensure proper mechanical properties for heavy-duty engine pistons. The newly developed manufacturing method lowers production costs by saving manufacturing time and reduces energy consumption. The current paper describes the hot forging of an engine piston made from 38MnSiVS5 micro-alloyed steel using controlled cooling. The finite element analysis was used to check for possible problems and suitable press capacity. Hot forging experiments were then conducted on a 2500tons crank press to evaluate feasibility of the proposed material and process. To check the mechanical properties after hot forging, the forged specimens were tensile tested, and the microstructures were examined in order to compare the results with the conventionally forged material. The skirt region of the as-forged 38MnSiVS5 piston showed better material properties compared to the conventional material. In addition, the total production time was reduced by about 80% as compared to conventional forging.
Today the specific outputs of modern supercharger DI diesel engine for passenger cars reach values exceeding 50kw/1. By development of the articulated piston, specific output of up to 70kw/1 are sought. In doing so, peak cylinder pressure increases from the current 14-16MPa to 18-20MPa. The Articulated piston was composed Al cast skirt part and steel forged crown part. We have the target fer the design of forging process and die of the steel forged crown part. The design parameters of the forging process of the piston were obtained by the forging industry experiences and our experimental data and analysis result of finite element simulation. Especially, the design parameter of preform in blocker die was decided by finite element simulation using numerical package DEFROM3D. And also we can verify the design parameter by conducting visio-plasticity test using plasticine material. When we compared the results of analysis and experiment, a metal flow and load curve showed good agreement. Through this research, we could design optimal preform shape of articulated piston for this supercharged DI diesel engine.
