  • The susceptibility of the predatory mite, Neoseiulus californicus to extracts of Melia azedarach, Piper nigrum, Syringa velutina and their mixtures was evaluated in laboratory bioassays. In treatments with plant extracts tested, 76-86% of adult female predators survived after 7 days after treatment. Adult female predators treated with plant extracts tested produced 68.3-81.1% as many eggs as did control females and eclosion of eggs deposited by treated predators was not affected. Moreover, treatment of plant extracts tested showed no toxic effect on N. californicus eggs and produced 100% hatchability. Survival of N. californicus nymphs was not seriously affected by exposure to the plant extracts tested. Immatures of N. californicus survived on the leaf disc treated with plant extracts tested and 78-90% of immature predators reached adulthood. These results suggest that extracts of Melia azedarach, Piper nigrum, Syringa velutina and their mixtures expected to be promising candidates for use in integrated mite management program with N. californicus.

  • Methanol extracts of 54 plant species in 32 families were tested for their antignawing activities against mice by wire-dipping method. The activity varied with plant species. Potent antignawing activity was observed in extracts from roots of Aucklandia lappa (Compositae), barks of Cinnamomum cassia (Lauraceae), fruits of Illicium verum (Magnoliaeceae), fruits of Piper nigrum (Piperaceae), rhizomes of Rheum officinale (Polygonaceae), and leaves of Pinus densiflora (Pinaceae). As naturally occurring rodent repellents, these plant-derived materials could be useful as a preventive agent against various kinds of damage caused by rodents.

Minor concentrations have been determined with ICP-AES and major concentrations with the help of SEM-EDS.

  • Black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) among several irritating spices tested was highly effective on the duration of hexobarbital hypnosis in mice. Pretreatment of mice with the methanolic extract of black pepper (60mg/kg i.p.) prolonged markedly the duration of hexobarbital sleeping time. Three consecutive daily administrations of the same dose of black pepper extract, however, shortened (37%) the duration of hexobarbital sleeping time. The ether soluble fraction of black pepper extract caused most potent effects on the duration of hexobarbital hypnosis. From the above results, it was postulated that the lipid soluble components of black pepper might considerably change the drug action and metabolism by altering drug metabolizing enzyme systems.

  • For the determination of inhibiting cytochrome P450(CYP)3A4 activity, an improvement HPLC method was established by using a new internal standard and solvent system. Moreover, CYP3A4 amount for a optimum reaction of enzyme was determined by a comparative study with a variety concentration of enzyme. Using a established method, inhibitory effect of CYP3A4 that is drug metabolizing enzyme Investigated on EtOAc extracts of 5-class spices. As a result of experiment, EtOAc extract of white pepper (Piper nigrum L.) showed strong inhibitory activity. On a continuous experiment, the fraction 2, 4 and 5 of while pepper extract showed remarkable inhibitory activity. Pipeline, a main constituent of pepper was not included in these fraction. It is suggested that major compounds for the inhibitory activity of white pepper may be other ingredient that is not piperine.

  • Analgesic and antiinflammatory activities of several herbal medicines were investigated in order to develop the antiinflammatory drugs from oriental herbal medicines. 80% Ethanol extracts of Ephedra sinica, Chaenoleles sinensis, Asiasarum siboldi, Nelumbo nucifera, Scolopendra subspinipes mutians, Evodia officinalis, Aremarrhenae asphodeloides, Bufo bufo gargarizans, Gardenia jasminoides, Piper longum, Carthamus tinctorius, Piperus nigrum, Magnolia officinalis and Siegesbeckia glabrescens showed significant inhibitory effects on hyaluronidase, trypsin, and albumin denaturation in vitro. They also decreased the acetic acid-induced pain and vascular permeability induced by histamine in mice.

  • Piperine (piperinoyl-piperidine) is a nitrogenous pungent substance contained in black pepper. the well know spice obtained from Piper nigrum L. (Piperaceae). Pharmacological studies have shown that piperine reduces inflammation and pain. possesses anticonvulsant and antiulcer activity. protects the liver and has deleterious effects on testis function. Prostaglandins(PGs) are a family of intercellular and intracellular messengers derived from arachidonic acid(AA) by phospholipase(PL) and cyclooxygenase(COX). (omitted)
