In this paper the development and implementation of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based Tunnelling Impact prediction and assessment program (SKKU-iTunnel) is presented. Program predicts tunnelling induced surface settlement and groundwater drawdown by utilizing well trained ANNs and uses these predicted values to perform the damage assessment likely to occur in nearby structures and pipelines/utilities for a given tunnel problem. Generalised artificial neural networks (ANNs) were trained, to predict the induced parameters, through databases generated by combining real field data and numerical analysis for cases that represented real field conditions. It is shown that program equipped with carefully trained ANN can predict tunnel impact assessments and perform damage assessments quiet efficiently and comparable accuracy to that of numerical analysis. This paper describes the idea and implementation details of the SKKU-iTunnel with an example for demonstration.
Subsea structures are always vulnerable to accidental risks induced by fishing gear, dropped objects, etc. This paper presents the design of a subsea manifold protective structure that protects against dropped object impacts. Probable dropped object scenarios were established considering the shapes and masses of the dropped objects. A design layout for the manifold protective structure was proposed, with detailed scantlings and material specifications. A method applicable to the pipelines specified in DNV-RP-F107(DNV, 2010) was applied to calculate the annual probabilities of dropped objects hitting the subsea manifold. Nonlinear finite element analyses provided the structural consequences due to the dropped object impacts such as the maximum deflections of the protective structure and the local fracture occurrences. A user-subroutine to implement the three-dimensional fracture strain surface was used to determine whether local fractures occur. The proposed protective structure was shown to withstand the dropped object impact loads in terms of the maximum deflections, even though local fractures could induce accelerated corrosion.
In this study, the impact characteristics of subsea pipelines that were installed in various soil types and burial depths were evaluated by a numerical method. An impact scenario replicated a dropped ship anchor that fell vertically and impacted an installed subsea pipeline. In order to calculate the impact force through terminal velocity, FLUENT, a computational fluid dynamic program and MDM (Moving Deforming Mesh) technique were applied. Next, a dynamic finite element program, ANSYS Explicit Dynamics, was used for impact analysis between the anchor and pipeline (or, subsea if they were buried). Three soil types were considered: loose sand, dense sand and soft clay by applying the Mohr-coulomb model to the seabed. The buried depth was assumed to be 0 m, 1 m and 2 m. In conclusion, a subsea pipeline was the most stable when buried in dense sand at a depth of 2 m to prevent impact damage.
Submersed rock-berm structures are frequently used for protection of underwater lifelines such as pipelines and power cables. During the service life, the rock-berm structure can experience several accidental loads such as anchor collision. The consequences can be severe with a certain level of frequency; hence, the structural responses should be carefully understood for implementing a proper structural health monitoring method. However, no study has been made to quantify the structural responses because it is hard to deal with the individual behavior of each rock. Therefore, this study presents a collision analysis of the submersed rock-berm structure using a finite element software package by facilitating the smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. The analysis results were compared with those obtained from the Lagrange method. Moreover, two types of anchors (stock anchor and stockless anchor), three collision points and two different drop velocities (terminal velocity of each anchor and 5 m/s) were selected to investigate the changes in the responses. Finally, the effect of these parameters (analysis method, anchor type, collision point and drop velocity) on the analysis results was studied. Accordingly, the effectiveness of the SPH method is verified, a safe rock-berm height (over 1 m) is proposed, and a gauge point (0.5 m above the seabed) is suggested for a structural health monitoring implementation.
Next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology has become a trend in the genomics research area. There are many software programs and automated pipelines to analyze NGS data, which can ease the pain for traditional scientists who are not familiar with computer programming. However, downstream analyses, such as finding differentially expressed genes or visualizing linkage disequilibrium maps and genome-wide association study (GWAS) data, still remain a challenge. Here, we introduce a dockerized web application written in R using the Shiny platform to visualize pre-analyzed RNA sequencing and GWAS data. In addition, we have integrated a genome browser based on the JBrowse platform and an automated intermediate parsing process required for custom track construction, so that users can easily build and navigate their personal genome tracks with in-house datasets. This application will help scientists perform series of downstream analyses and obtain a more integrative understanding about various types of genomic data by interactively visualizing them with customizable options.

A problem faced by oil companies is the maintenance of the location register of pipelines that cross the surf zone, the regular survey of their location, and also their inspection. A survey of the state of art did not allow identifying operating systems capable of executing such tasks. Commercial technologies available on the market also do not address this problem and/or do not satisfy the presented requirements. A possible solution is to use robotic systems which have the ability to walk on the shore and in the surf zone, subject to existing currents and ripples, and being able to withstand these ambient conditions. In this sense, the authors propose the development of a spider crab biologically inspired robot to achieve those tasks. Based on these ideas, this work presents a biomechanical study of the spider crab, its modeling and simulation using the SimMechanics toolbox of Matlab/Simulink, which is the first phase of this more vast project. Results show a robot model that is moving in an "animal like" manner, the locomotion, the algorithm presented in this paper allows the crab to walk sideways, in the desired direction.

In naval architecture and offshore engineering, the development and a broad use has been achieved in the field of flow control valves for pipe system. Butterfly valves are also widely used for flow control, but there are not many studies for triple-eccentric butterfly valves. Moreover, if the fluid of pipeline flows in the bi-direction then it makes more complicate to adapt triple-eccentric butterfly valves to flow control. In this study, we are trying to develop a bi-directional triple-eccentric butterfly valve through sealing mechanism and stem design study. Digital mockup using 3D CAD was constructed for shape interference check and structural analysis was conducted for structural safety. Also we performed leakage test to check out the durability of the bi-directional pressure for the developed valve.
Korea Gas Corporation has operated high pressure gas transmission line of about 600 kilometers and, therefore, a series of repair welding processes are required in order to cope with external defects such as dent, gouge, cracking usually due to mechanical attacks. Most of gas pipelines repair processes are performed after completely venting remaining gas. However, in some case, though it is very unusual, repairs require without venting gas. For instance, this case is that damaged pipeline is remedied with split sleeve by welding. In this paper, in an effort to confirm a safe application of the split sleeve welding, residual stress, strain and temperature distributions are evaluated by computer simulation and experiments. The results obtained are as follows : 1) Computer modelling is supposed to be reasonable because microstructure changes due to welding is simulated coincidently as compare to that of real condition. 2) The maximal temperature on inside surface of pipeline is 50$0^{\circ}C$ for the repair welding process. 3) The amount of residual stress is estimated as the stress corresponding to 0.8% strain. 4) The repair process employed is determined to be technically preferable because of its avoiding cracks and fractures in the course of welding.
In Korea Gas Corporation, as one of the pipeline repairing methods, damaged pipelines are sometimes treated with a temporally employment of split sleeve. On conducting the repair process, circumferential fillet and longitudinal groove welding usually must be included. For the case of groove welding, a considerable amount of R&D have been carried out related to property changes, while few study on the property change in fillet welding has been conducted. In this paper, so as to confirm the specification of fillet welding in terms of safety and reliability, properties changed by fillet welding were investigated for two welding processes. Qualifying tests such as reviewing macrostructure and nick-break tests were performed according to API 1104 and ASME section IX. In addition, tensile properties and hardness were evaluated according to KS B0841 and BS 4515. The fillet weld prepared by the qualified procedure showed melting depth of 0.8∼1.3mm and heat affected zone of 2.8∼3.4mm length. No crack and lack of penetration were observed. And the results of hardness and nick-break tests satisfied code requirements. The area crossed by fillet and groove welding line was found to have minimal tensile strength.
The primary purpose of the present study was to investigate the mechanism causing scour around a pipeline placed on the seabed in a shallow water zone. Such submarine pipelines are usually exposed to currents and waves. The present experiments made estimates for each different flow type. The scour width and depth in the equilibrium scour phase were analyzed by non-dimensional parameters. The experiment in this study considered various parameters: pipe diameters, wave periods, wave heights, and current velocities. Using the experimental results, the correlations of scour width, scour depth, and main non-dimensional parameters such as the Fr number and KC number were analyzed. In the case of steady currents, the scour hole was closely related to the bottom velocity, while the scour hole in waves showed a relatively low correlation to the bottom velocity because when exposed to waves the scour hole was restricted according to the movement distance of the water particles during a wave period. However, the scour width under a steady current was not limited because vortex shedding was well developed from having enough time and distance.
