  • Gliomas are the most common malignant brain tumor and cause the most deaths. Manual brain tumor segmentation is expensive, time-consuming, error-prone, and dependent on the radiologist's expertise and experience. Manual brain tumor segmentation outcomes by different radiologists for the same patient may differ. Thus, more robust, and dependable methods are needed. Medical imaging researchers produced numerous semi-automatic and fully automatic brain tumor segmentation algorithms using ML pipelines and accurate (handcrafted feature-based, etc.) or data-driven strategies. Current methods use CNN or handmade features such symmetry analysis, alignment-based features analysis, or textural qualities. CNN approaches provide unsupervised features, while manual features model domain knowledge. Cascaded algorithms may outperform feature-based or data-driven like CNN methods. A revolutionary cascaded strategy is presented that intelligently supplies CNN with past information from handmade feature-based ML algorithms. Each patient receives manual ground truth and four MRI modalities (T1, T1c, T2, and FLAIR). Handcrafted characteristics and deep learning are used to segment brain tumors in a Global Convolutional Neural Network (GCNN). The proposed GCNN architecture with two parallel CNNs, CSPathways CNN (CSPCNN) and MRI Pathways CNN (MRIPCNN), segmented BraTS brain tumors with high accuracy. The proposed model achieved a Dice score of 87% higher than the state of the art. This research could improve brain tumor segmentation, helping clinicians diagnose and treat patients.

  • Many engineering problems on the pipeline flow use continuity, energy, friction loss head equation. To calculate friction loss head in a pipeline, Darcy-Weisbach and many average velocity equations can be used and Hazen-Williams equation is used frequently in the pipe network for the water supply systems. Darcy-Weisbach equation is a general one acquired from applying Bernoulli's equation in the pipeline flow and Hazen-Williams equation is a experimental one in case that pipe velocity is below 3m/sec and pipe diameter is over 50mm. In this study, comparing Darcy-Weisbach with Hazen-Williams equation, relation f and C that are expressed as roughness coefficients of those equations is explained. Next, head losses calculated from using those equations are compared and those are applied in realistic pipelines. Comparing f with C, the f is decreasing linearly according to increase of the Reynolds number Re and increasing in case the C is decreasing. additionally, the C is increasing up to a point and then is decreasing according to increase of the Re. Next, the C is increasing and Re's range for increase of the C lengthens in case of decreasing of the relative roughness ${\varepsilon}/d$. Comparing head losses acquired from the two equations, head loss appears large in case that the C is decreasing and the ${\varepsilon}/d$ is increasing. additionally, Head loss calculated by the Darcy-Weisbach equation varies larger than one by Hazen-Williams equation in regard of the Re. Next, change aspect of head loss acquired by the C is distinguished more clearly than the one by the ${\varepsilon}/d$.

  • To return LNG to a gaseous state, it is fed into a regasification plant. For inland area, where pipelines do not exist or difficult to construct, the LNG is delivered to the inland-receiving terminal available at that area, regasified and delivered to consumers. At inland-receiving terminal, air-heating vaporizer type is usually used. To contribute in developing an efficient air-heating vaporizer, experiment on finned type air-heating vaporizer using 8 fins, 50 mm fin length (8fin50le) and 4 fins, 75 mm fin length (4fin75le) were conducted. The experiments were conducted by varying the ambient condition and the length of the vaporizer. The ambient air was controlled so that it has the same condition with air condition in every season available. $LN_2$ is used to substitute LNG because of safety reason. The results show that characteristics of the finned type 4fin75le vaporizer are comparable to finned type 8fin50le vaporizer at all season.

  • In approximately fifty utilities, including KHNP (Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power), CHECWORKS is used as a tool for predicting and managing the wall thinning of carbon steel piping; this wall thinning is caused by flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC). It is known that CHECWORKS is only applicable to predict the wall thinning of piping with large bores. When dealing with small-bore steel piping, FAC engineers measure the thickness of the susceptible area that is selected on the basis of the experience and judgment of the engineer. This paper proposes the application of CHECWORKS for the management of wall thinning of small-bore piping. Four small-bore pipelines of a domestic nuclear power plant were analyzed from the viewpoints of FAC and fluid dynamics by using CHECWORKS and FLUENT code. Depending on the engineer's skill, CHECWORKS can also be used for the management of wall thinning of small-bore piping.

  • Flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC) leads to thinning of steel pipe walls that are exposed to flowing water or wet steam. From experience, it is seen that FAC damage to piping at fossil and nuclear plants can result in outages that require expensive repairs and can affect plant reliability and safety. CHECWORKS have been utilized in domestic nuclear plants as a predictive tool to assist FAC engineers in planning inspections and evaluating the inspection data so that piping failures caused by FAC can be prevented. However, CHECWORKS may be occasionally ignore local susceptible portions when predicting FAC damage in a group of pipelines after constructing a database for all the secondary side piping in nuclear plants. This paper describes the methodologies that can complement CHECWORKS and the verifications of CHECWORKS prediction results using numerical analysis. FAC susceptible locations determined using CHECWORKS for two pipeline groups of a nuclear plant was compared with determined using the numerical-analysis-based FLUENT.

  • The valves used to control or shut off the flow through a pipeline can be divided into many different types, including gate valves, globe valves, and check valves. Globe valves, in particular, have excellent properties, and because they can easily control the flow under high-pressure conditions, they are generally used in LNG ship and steam pipelines. In this paper, a method for changing the shape of a seat was suggested to solve the valve leakage problem from a structural perspective. In addition, the stress distribution and directional deformation were compared for each model. The suggested models were thus validated, and the optimized seat structure, which includes a self-supporting capability for decreasing the amount of leakage, was determined.

  • The purpose of this study (I) is to provide a new methodology for evaluating deterioration of buried pipe networks for the large-diameter old pipe improvement project currently performed by K-water. To develop a new assessment model for large-diameter pipe deterioration, this study has investigated the three representative methods for the pipe deterioration assessment such as evaluation methods 1995 and 2002, and the state evaluation method through literature reviews. The ten assessment factors were selected by considering large-diameter pipe characteristics as well as common factors with high priority in the three methods. Also, the weighting of the factors was estimated by a regression equation from experiments and analysis on domestic large-diameter pipelines and expert survey data. It is expected that the new assessment model developed by analysing the existing three models is more reliable to assess the deterioration of large-diameter pipe networks.

  • Due to increase in demand of stable and long pipelines in natural gas industry, wide range of researches are being performed on automation welding to improved welding quality with respect to weld process parameters in real time measurement. In particular, the coupling between the pipe manufacturing process and location of the weld seam, the measured size of the gap that exists in the weld position and the weld angle depending on whether the movement of molten weld. This is due to absence of controlling welding penetration position, depending on the required size of the angle of the setting. In addition, the optimum welding conditions must be considered while selecting, the correlation between these variables and the systematic correlation has not yet been identified. Therefore, in most welded pipe root-pass weld solely depends on the experience of workers in relation to secure a stable weld quality. In this study, automation welding system is implemented to select a suitable root-pass STT (Surface Tension Transfer) welding method using the optimal welding conditions. To successfully accomplish this objective, there were various welding conditions used for welding experiment to confirm that the assessment required for construction through the pipe and automatic welding process is proposed to optimize this plan.
