  • Effects of backing conditions on the impedance tube measurement are investigated experimentally, by using several pairs of generally employed end conditions. The results show that the measured values are similar for most of pairs, except the case of using an open pipe condition. In addition, the random error is investigated in the viewpoint of the variation of test conditions. The multi-termination method is suggested for minimizing such a random error.

  • This work reports results of our study on the dynamic responses of the buried pipelines both along the axial and the transverse directions under various boundary end conditions. In order to investigate the effect of the boundary end conditions for the dynamic responses of the buried pipeline, we have devised a computer program to find the solutions of the formulae on the dynamic responses (displacements, axial strains, and bending strains) under the various boundary end conditions considered in this study, The dynamic behavior of the buried pipelines for the forced vibration is found to exhibit two different forms, a transient response and a steady state response, depending on the time before and after the transfer of a seismic wave on the end of the buried pipeline. We have observed a resonance when the mode wavelength matches the wavelength of the seismic wave, where the mode number(k) of resonance f3r the axial direction. On the other hand, we have not been able to observe a resonance in the analysis of the transverse direction, because the dynamic responses are found to vanish after the seventh mode. From the results of the dynamic responses at many points of the pipeline, we have found that the responses appeared to be dependent critically on the boundary end conditions. Such effects are found to be most prominent especially for the maximum values of the displacement, the strain and its position.

  • This study investigates the structural performance of 3D steel pipe rack suspended scaffolding systems. For the purpose, a standard full scale 3D steel pipe rack suspended scaffolding system considering two frames, two plane trusses, purlins and wooden floor is constructed in the laboratory. A developed load transmission system was placed in these experimental systems to distribute single loads to the center of a specific area in a step-by-step manner using a load jack. After each load increment, the displacements are measured by means of linear variable differential transducers placed in several critical points of the system. The tests are repeated for five different system conditions to determine the structural performance. The means of system conditions is the numbers of the tie bars which are used to connect plane trusses under level. Finite elements models of the 3D steel pipe rack suspended scaffolding systems considering different systems conditions are constituted using SAP2000 software to support the experimental tests and to use the models in future studies. Each of models including load transmission platform is analyzed under a single loading and the displacements are obtained. In addition, to calibrate the numerical models some uncertain parameters such as elasticity modulus of wooden floor and connection rigidity of purlins to plane trusses are assessed experimentally. The results of this work demonstrate that when increasing numbers of tie bars the displacement values are decreased. Also the results obtained from developed numerical models have harmony with those of experimental. In addition, the scaffolding system with two tie bars at the beginning and at the end of the plane truss has the optimum structural performance compared the results obtained for other scaffolding system conditions.

  • Most fossil power plants and many critical components will be approaching the end of their nominal design life. At the same time, utilities are finding it economically attractive to extend the use of these plants for several more years, Especially Main steam pipe that operated under high temperature and pressure, often under the more severe operating conditions associated with cycling duty, is most important pipe system and critical component in fossil power plant. To extend the viability of older pipe system and to improve the operation and maintenance reliability, some technologies of precise diagnosis and life management have evolved out of the necessity. The purpose of this study is to descrive the related technologies and show the example of one power plants. The purpose of this study is to descrive the related technologies and show the example of one power plants. The stress analysis was done using ANSYS FEM Code. The branch area from main steam to turbine was the high stressed zone. To evaluate the degradation of the pipe material, replica, visual check, magnetic test, hardness test were done at the welding spot. The degradation level of welding point was E/F, so the remaining life of the welded area was about 0-25%.

  • The objective of this study is to determine the appropriate size of the inlet pipe diameter and thereby conduct hydraulic analysis for the Korean water distribution network. To this end, the data tables for equivalent pipe diameters and outflow rates presently employed in Korea were adopted. By incorporating the table of equivalent pipe diameters, it was found that the size of the inlet pipe diameter was overestimated, which can cause shortage of water pressure and malfunctioning or insufficiency of outflow rate in the corresponding adjacent region. However, by conducting hydraulic analysis based on the table of outflow rates, relatively reasonable flow rates were observed. Furthermore, by comparing the real demand-driven analysis (RDDA) approach and demand-driven analysis (DDA) approach toward managing the huge water demand, it was observed that DDA could not effectively respond to real hourly usage conditions, whereas RDDA (which reflects the hourly effects of inlet pipe diameter and storage tanks) demonstrated results similar to that of real water supply.

  • The current paper presents a technique to detect crack in non-uniform cantilever-type pipe beams, that have step changes in the properties of their cross sections, restrained by a translational and rotational spring with a tip mass at the free end. An equation for estimating the natural frequencies for the non-uniform beams is derived using the boundary and continuity conditions, and an equivalent bending stiffness for cracked beam is applied to calculate the natural frequencies of the cracked beam. An experimental study for a step-changed non-uniform cantilever-type pipe beam restrained by bolts with a tip mass is carried out to verify the proposed method. The translational and rotational spring constants are updated using the neural network technique to the results of the experiment for intact case in order to establish a baseline model for the subsequent crack detection. Then, several numerical simulations for the specimen are carried out using the derived equation for estimating the natural frequencies of the cracked beam to construct a set of training patterns of a neural network. The crack locations and sizes are identified using the trained neural network for the 5 damage cases. It is found that the crack locations and sizes are reasonably well estimated from a practical point of view. And it is considered that the usefulness of the proposed method for structural health monitoring of the step-changed non-uniform cantilever-type pipe beam-like structures elastically restrained in the ground and have a tip mass at the free end could be verified.

  • In order to predict performance of the intake manifold, which is dependent on the length and diameter of a resonance pipe, the Fluid Dynamic Model for 4-cylinder diesel engine is developed using two step Lax-Wendroff method to solve the governing equations of air flow in the intake system. Boundary conditions at the intake valve, branch at the manifolds, and pipe end are also modeled. The results of the models are compared with the experimental results of a motored engine. The model is capable of predicting the real phenomena satisfactorily with reasonable computing time.

  • This study was carried out to propose the managemental improvement of the purification plants and the distribution facilities which can minimize the formation of disinfection by-products in drinking water distribution system. The disinfection by-products were highly created in the water treatment plant that the organic matters were high and the chlorine dosage was excessive. The concentration of DSPs was shown the highest value in August and the lowest value in December, because of temperature and pre-chlorine dosage effect. From the result of tracer test, the travel time from the treatment plant to the end of pipeline was around 3-4 days in summer, 5-6 days in winter, respectively, and the DSPs concentration of the reservoir(end of pipe) was 2-3 times higher than that of the beginning point. The improvement of the chlorination process and structural reformation of distribution facility was demanded to minimize the DSPs increase from purification plant to the end of pipe.
