  • Domestic usage of high strength steel for pile has been limited to steel with yield strength (YS) of 490 MPa. However, design and construction cases abroad show beneficial usage of steel pipe with YS ranging in 500~700 MPa. In this study, YS 590 MPa steel pipe has been tested for driven pile foundation in Songdo area. Pile dynamic analysis (PDA) was carried out for 18 piles of which 16 piles have been reviewed for comparison of the PDA test results with those of GRLWeap analysis using SPT N value. Back analysis of PDA analysis was also carried out to narrow the deviation of standard SPT N value used in GRLWeap analysis. A regression equation is suggested for the shaft and toe resistance according to SPT N values for future GRLWeap analysis that can be used in the designing stage at Songdo area.

  • Jacked pile that involves the use of hydraulic jacks to press the piles into the ground is free from noise and vibration, and is possibly installed within a limited construction area. Thus, as an alternative to conventional pile driving methods, pile jacking could become widely accepted for the construction projects in urban area (e.g., reconstruction or remodeling construction projects). Great concern has arisen over the prediction of axially loaded jacked pile behavior. Against this background, a series of pile load tests were hence conducted on a jacked steel pipe pile installed in weathered zone (i.e., weathered soil and weathered rock). From the test results, base resistance and shaft resistance for each test condition were evaluated and compared with the values predicted by the previous driven pile resistance assessment method. Test results showed that the previous driven pile resistance assessment method highly underestimated both the base and shaft resistances of a jacked pile; differences were more obviously observed with the shaft resistance. The reason for this discrepancy is that a driven pile normally experiences a larger number of loading/unloading cycles during installation, and therefore shows significantly degraded stiffness of surrounding soil. Based on the results of the pile load tests, particular attention was given to the modification of the previous driven pile resistance assessment method for investigating the axially loaded jacked pile behavior.

  • One of the domestic co-generation plants have undergone excessive vibration problems of turbine attributed to external force for years. The root cause of turbine vibration may be shan alignment problem which sometimes is changed by thermal expansion and external farce, even if turbine technicians perfectly performed it. To evaluate the alignment condition from plant start-up to full load, a strain measurement of turbine and main steam piping subjected to thermal loading is monitored by using strain gages. The strain gages are bonded on both bearing housing adjusting bolts and pipe stoppers which. installed in the x-direction of left-side main steam piping near the turbine inlet in order to monitor closely the effect of turbine under thermal deformation of turbine casing and main steam piping during plant full load. Also in situ load of constant support hangers in main steam piping system is measured by strain gages and its results are used to rebalance the hanger rod load. Consequently, the experimental stress analysis by using strain gages turns out to be very useful tool to diagnose the trouble and failures of not only to stationary components but to rotating machinery in power plants.

  • In the present study, we used a loop thermosyphon heat exchanger consisting of condensers with internal fins and external plate fins which are 480 mm wide, 68 mm long, and 1,000 mm high. The heat transfer pipes in the heat exchanger were 15 mm in diameter and 1,000 mm in length, and 98 heat transfer pipes were installed in the heat exchanger. According to the experimental results, as the spaces between the internal discontinuous pins decreased, the frequency of pressure drops increased and changes in temperature at the outlet of the condenser were shown to be a little smaller. Therefore, we can see that as the spaces between internal discontinuous pins decreased, the heat transfer performance increased. For the loop heat pipe heat exchanger consisting of a condenser with internal and plate fins, as the temperature of the air flowing into the condenser increased, the condensation heat transfer rate also increased, and as the condenser refrigerant inflow temperature increased, the condensation heat transfer rate increased as well.

  • Finite element analyses using coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian technique are performed to investigate the effect of soil conditions on plugging of open-ended piles in sands. Results from numerical simulations are compared against the data from field load tests on three open-ended piles and show very good agreement. A parametric study focusing on determination of the coefficient of lateral earth pressure (K) in soil plug after pile driving are then performed for various soil densities, end-bearing conditions, and layering conditions. Results from the parametric study suggest that the K value in the soil plug - and hence the degree of soil plugging - increases with increasing soil densities. The analysis results further show that the K value within the soil plug can reach about 63 to 71% of the coefficient of passive earth pressure after pile driving. For layered soil profiles, the greater K values are achieved after pile driving when the denser soil layer is present near the pile base regardless of number of soil layers. This study provides comprehensive numerical and experimental data that can be used to develop advanced theory for analysis and design of open-ended pipe piles, especially for estimation of inner shaft resistance after pile driving.

  • Open-ended pipe piles are often used for the foundations of both land and offshore structures because of their relatively low driving resistance. In this study, load tests were performed on model pipe piles installed in calibration chamber samples in order to investigate the effects of pile installation method on soil plugging and bearing capacity. Results of the test program showed that the incremental filling ratio (IFR), which is used to indicate the degree of soil plugging in open-ended piles, decreased (i) with increasing hammer weight for the same driving energy and (ii) with increasing hammer weight at the same fall height. The base and shaft resistance of the piles were observed to increase (i) with increasing hammer weight for the same driving energy and (ii) with increasing hammer weight at the given same fa11 height. The jacked pile was found to be have higher bearing capacity than an identical driven pile under similar conditions, mostly due to the more effective development of a soil plug in jacking than in driving.

  • The steel pipe of steel-concrete composite piles increases the pile strength and induces the ductile failure by constraining the deformation of the inner concrete. In this research, the load-movement relations and the reinforcement effect by the outer steel pipe in the steel-concrete composite pile were analyzed by performing three-dimensional numerical analyses, which can simulate the yielding behavior of the pile material and the elasto-plastic behavior of soils. The parameters analyzed in the study include three pile materials of steel, concrete and composite, pile diameter and loading direction. As the results, the axial capacity of the composite pile was 1.9 times larger than that of the steel pipe pile and similar with that of the concrete pile. At the allowable movement criteria, the horizontal capacity of the composite pile was 1.46 times larger than that of the steel pile and 1.25 times larger than that of the concrete pile. In addition, the horizontal movement at the pile head of the composite pile was about 78% of that of the steel pile and about 53% of that of the concrete pile, which showed that the movement reduction effect of the composite pile was significant and enables the economical design of drilled shafts.

  • The working load at pile is sometimes subjected to not only compression load but also lateral load and uplift forces. Pile foundation is essential and uplift load can be applied because of buoyancy, a typhoon, wind or seismic forces. This study was carried out to determine the uplift capacity of concrete pile foundation driven in clay. Pile was driven in clay, between pile and clay adhesion factor was estimated, and it is the mean value between the cast-in-situ-pile and steel pipe pile. When pile foundation is loaded for long time, creep behavior occurs. The behavior of creep is originated from the clay creep contacted with pile. The creep behavior of pile foundation embedded in clay is heavily depended on the thickness of clay around the pile shaft, pore water pressure in clay, and creep behavior of clay.
