Time-frequency analysis (TFA) method was applied to identify the integrity of the internal local surface of a pipe where some chemical corrosions are likely to occur by acid mixed in the coolant of nuclear power plants. The spalling out of internal material pieces by corrosion induces some transient signals and the change of structural vibration of a local point in the pipe. It is therefore possible to detect the corrosion detachment through the measurement of the transient acoustic signals or the vibration signals. In this presentation, the TFA was configured on the vibrational signal data of the pipe and it is identified that the TFA can Provide an important information, i.e., the amplitude fluctuations in the instantaneous frequency of each characteristic frequency.
Wall thinning can be classified into three types: flow-accelerated corrosion, cavitation erosion and solid particle erosion. This article presents a study of solid particle erosion, which frequently causes damages to power plants' pipe system. Unlike previous studies, this study uses a mechanism to make solid particles in a fluid flow collide with pipe materials in underwater condition. Experiment is conducted in three cases of velocity according to solid-water ratio using the three types of the materials of A106B, SS400, and A6061. The experiments were performed for 30 days, and the surface morphology and hardness of the materials were examined for every 7 days. Based on the velocity change of the solid particles in a fluid flow, the surface changes, the change in the amount of erosion, the erosion rate and the variation in the hardness of carbon steel and aluminum family pipe materials can all be determined. In addition, factor-based erosion rates are verified and a wall-thinning relation function is suggested for the pipe materials.

Experiments and a numerical simulation were conducted to investigate the deformation and impact behavior of a corroded pipe, as corrosion, fatigue, and collision phenomena frequently occur in subsea pipelines. This study focuses on the deformation of the corrosion region and the variation of the geometry of the pipe under impact loading. The experiments for the impact behavior of the corroded pipe were performed using an impact test apparatus to validate the results of the simulation. In addition, during the simulation, material tests were performed, and the results were applied to the simulation. The ABAQUS explicit finite element analysis program was used to perform numerical simulations for the parametric study, as well as experiment scenarios, to investigate the effects of defects under impact loading. In addition, the modified ASME B31.8 code formula was proposed to define the damage range for the dented pipe.
In order to investigate the corrosion fatigue characteristics in the weld of multi-pass welded A 106 Gr B steel pipe, corrosion fatigue tests were performed under the various stress ratios and 3.5 wt% NaCl solution at room temperature. The corrosion fatigue characteristic curves were represented using crack closure concept. The obtained results are as follows : when the load frequency is 1.0 Hz, the crack opening point is transited in the region of $K_{max}$=20∼32 MPaㆍ $m^{1}$2/. In the low stress intensity factor range, the crack opening point is higher than that in air. However, in the high stress intensity factor range, it is lower than that in air. In the cases of 0.1 Hz and 0.01 Hz, the crack opening point gradually decreases to $K_{min}$ with $K_{max}$ increase.rease.

This study was performed to estimate the water quality parameters on corrosion such as pH, turbidity, Fe released concentration, corrosion rate by using batch reactor for corrosion control of phosphate corrosion inhibitor in carbon steel pipes. The pH, conductivity, alkalinity, and Ca hardness showed a slight change for dosing the phosphate corrosion inhibitor with carbon steel pipe in batch reactor. The turbidity was about ten times lower with 5 mg $P_2O_5/L$ of the corrosion inhibitor than that without. The Fe released concentration and corrosion rate was decreased by about 12.2, 24 times with 5 mg $P_2O_5/L$ of the corrosion inhibitor than that without. In conclusion, the optimum concentration of the phosphate corrosion inhibitor was found to be 5 mg $P_2O_5/L$. The effect of the corrosion inhibitor was significant for the carbon steel plate samples tested in this study. The corrosion inhibitor can be an effective cure for corrosion and red water problem preventing the service pipe from further corrosion.

The failure assessment for corroded pipeline has been considered with the full scale burst test and the finite element analysis. The burst tests were conducted on 762 mm diameter, 17.5 mm wall thickness and API 5L X65 pipe that contained specially manufactured rectangular corrosion defect. The failure pressure for corroded pipeline was measured by burst testing and classified with respect to corrosion sizes and corroded regions - the body, the girth weld and the seam weld of pipe. Finite element analysis was carried out to derive failure criteria of corrosion defect on the pipe. A series of finite element analyses were performed to obtain a limit load solution for corrosion defects on the basis of burst test. As a result, the criteria for failure assessment of corrosion defect within the body, the girth weld and the seam weld of API 5L X65 gas pipeline were proposed.
Flow accelerated corrosion (FAC) of the carbon steel piping in nuclear power plants (NPPs) has been major issue in nuclear industry. During the FAC, a protective oxide layer on carbon steel dissolves into flowing water leading to a thinning of the oxide layer and accelerating corrosion of base material. As a result, severe failures may occur in the piping and equipment of NPPs. Effect of alloying elements on FAC of pipe materials was studied with rotating cylinder FAC test facility at $150^{\circ}C$ and at flow velocity of 4m/s. The facility is equipped with on line monitoring of pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen(DO) and temperature. Test solution was the demineralized water, and DO concentration was less than 1 ppb. Surface appearance of A 106 Gr. B which is used widely in secondary pipe in NPPs showed orange peel appearance, typical appearance of FAC. The materials with Cr content higher than 0.17wt.% showed pit. The pit is thought to early degradation mode of FAC. The corrosion product within the pit was enriched with Cr, Mo, Cu, Ni and S. But S was not detected in SA336 F22V with 2.25wt.% Cr. The enrichment of Cr and Mo seemed to be related with low, solubility of Cr and Mo compared to Fe. Measured FAC rate was compared with Ducreaux's relationship and showed slightly lower FAC rate than Ducreaux's relationship.

This study performed in order to evaluate the effects of pipe materials on corrosion and bacteria regrowth using a laboratory scale batch test. Two varieties of feed water with different microbial conditions were selected: tap water, surface river water (Han River water), and five pipe materials; carbon steel, copper, galvanized iron, stainless steel, and PVC, Carbon steel and galvanized iron pipes showed higher corrosion rates than other materials. In terms of attached bacterial growth, pipes with PVC and stainless steel showed higher bacteria concentration compared to other materials. Pseudomonas vesicularis was the predominant bacteria found on biofilm. The behavior of bacterial growth in the pipes was observed using a scanning electron microscope.
This study proposes a laser based impedance measurement system and impedance based pipe corrosion and bolt-loosening monitoring techniques under temperature variations. For impedance measurement, the laser based impedance measurement system is optimized and adopted in this paper. First, a modulated laser beam is radiated to a photodiode, converting the laser beam into an electric signal. Then, the electric signal is applied to a MFC transducer attached on a target structure for ultrasonic excitation. The corresponding impedance signals are measured, re-converted into a laser beam, and radiated back to the other photodiode located in a data interrogator. The transmitted impedance signals are treated with an outlier analysis using generalized extreme value (GEV) statistics to reliably signal off structural damage. Validation of the proposed technique is carried out to detect corrosion and bolt-loosening in lab-scale carbon steel elbow pipes under varying temperatures. It has been demonstrated that the proposed technique has a potential to be used for structural health monitoring (SHM) of pipe structures.
