  • In this paper, experimental study performed on steel-pipe connections for structural members of a greenhouse is presented. By those experiments performed, bending moment, deformation and stress distribution of specimens were investigated under four point bending test. The bending performance according to connection method using pin and the stretching is also investigated. The results of bending performance of the no connection specimen were compared to those of other connection specimens. The pin and stretching connection specimens showed lower banding performance than the no connection specimen. The stretching connection method was relatively higher bending performance than the pin connection specimens. According to the results, we proposed the connection method with good bending performance that can be applied to steel-pipe connection in greenhouse.

  • Fracture behaviors of pipes with local wall thinning is very important for the integrity of nuclear power plant. In pipes of energy plants, sometimes, the local wall thinning may result from severe drosion-corrosion damage. However, effect of local wall thinning on strength and fracture behaviors of piping system were not well studied. In this paper, the monotonic bending tests were performed of full-scale carbon steel pipes with local wall thinning. A monotonic bending load was applied to straight pipe specimens by four-point loading at ambient temperature without internal pressure. From the tests, fracture behaviors and fracture strength of locally thinned pipe were manifested systematically. The observed failure modes were divided into four types; ovalization, ovalization+cracking, local buckling and local buckling+cracking. Also, maximum load was successfully evaluated.

  • This study evaluated the effect of restraint of pressure induced bending(PIB) on crack mouth opening displacement(CMOD) for circumferential through-wall crack in pipe by using both elastic and elastic-plastic finite element analyses. The analyses results showed the restraint of PIB was decreased crack opening for a given crack length and tensile stress, and the effect was considerable for large crack and short restraint length. Also, the restraint effect on CMOD was independent on the variation in pipe diameter and decreased with increasing pipe thickness, and it depended on not total restraint length but short restraint length for non-symmetrically restrained. Additionally, the effect of restraint of PIB was more significant in the elastic-plastic analysis results compared with in the elastic analysis results.

  • In this study, the freezing process of L-shaped pipe exposed to the outside was investigated numerically by considering the mushy zone of freezing water. From the numerical results, it was found that the flow was outwardly directed due to the influence of the L-shaped bending part in the outside exposed part of the pipe, and the ice was formed in the shape of longitudinal corrugation on the wall surface of the pipe after the bending part. It is confirmed that this phenomenon is caused by the venturi effect due to the freezing as seen in connection with the velocity distribution in the pipe. It is found that the remelting phenomenon at the end of the freezing section occur simultaneously during the process of forming the ice in the pipe section. In regard of the factors affecting freezing, it was found that the thickness of the freezing layer is increased as the exposed pipe surface temperature is decreased, and the pipe surface temperature had a significant effect on the change of the freezing layer thickness. At the same time, it was found that the freezing layer becomes relatively thin when the water inflow rate is increased. This phenomenon was caused by reducing the exposure time of freezing water due to the vigorous flow convection of the water fluid.

  • Flexible pipes take advantage of their ability to move, or deflect, under loads without structural damage. Common types of flexible pipes are manufactured from polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), steel, glass fiber reinforced thermosetting polymer plastic (GFRP), and aluminum. In this paper, we present the result of an investigation pertaining to the short-term behavior of buried polyethylene pipe. The mechanical properties of the polyethylene pipe produced in the domestic manufacturer are determined and the results are reported in this paper. In addition, vertical ring deflection is measured by the laboratory model test and the finite element analysis (FEA) is also conducted to simulate the short-term behavior of polyethylene pipe buried underground. Based on results from soil-pipe interaction finite element analyses of polyethylene pipe is used to predict the vertical ring deflection and maximum bending strain of polyethylene pipe.

  • The mining of imitated manganese noodles in 1000 m of seawater is planned for 2012. Thus, it is necessary to prepare the lifting pipes to be used for the test. Because of storage and expense constraints, flexible and economic HDPE pipe is being considered, making it necessary to test the structural safety. Material, pressure-chamber tests and finite element analysis of HDPE pipe for the 1000-m depth were performed. The tangential stiffness of HDPE was obtained through tension and three-point bending material tests and used for a structural analysis. FEA results show that the current sample pipe segment is safe for 1000 m of water pressure, and the stress result is also within the safe value. From the current results, the HDPE pipe seems to be acceptable only for the currently suggested constraints. However, more numerical and pressure tests need to be considered by applying additional physical conditions such as gravitational and hydrodynamic loads, external and internal fluid pressure, axial force induced ship motion, and heavy pump pressure to determine future usage.

  • The vibrational system of this study is consisted of a rotating cantilever pipe conveying fluid and the tip mass. The equation of motion is derived by using the Lagrange equation. The influences of the rotating angular velocity and the velocity of fluid flow in a cantilever pipe have been studied on the dynamic characteristics of a rotating cantilever pipe by the numerical method. The effects of a tip mass on the dynamic response of a cantilever pipe are also studied. The tip-amplitude and maximum tip-deflection of each direction are directly proportional to the tip mass of the cantilever pipe in steady state. It identifies that the influence of the fluid velocity and the rotating angular velocity of the cantilever pipe give much variation the bending tip-displacement of steady state and the bending tip-displacement of non-steady state, respectively. The influence of the rotating angular velocity gives much the deflection of axial direction.

  • In order to examine the effects of yield stress, tensile strength and thickness on the buckling behavior during bending of pipes, the nonlinear finite element analysis of the 3-point bending tests was carried out using the commercial software (ABAQUS) under the condition of L4(2$^{3}$) performed according to the designed condition. Form the analysis of simulation results, it was found that yield stress and thickness were the major factors on buckling load at pipe bending and tensile strength gave little influence because the plastic strain and plastic zone are small. For the punch displacement to the occurrence of buckling, thickness is a major factor and yield stress and tensile strength are the minor factors.

  • Modal properties for tapered cantilever pipe-type beam is identified by applying the boundary conditions to a general solution for tapered beam. A bending stiffness for cracked beam is constructed based on an energy method for tapered cantilever thin-walled pipe, which has a through-the-thickness crack, subjected to bending. Then the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a tapered cantilever thin-walled cracked pipe are identified. It can be found that the phenomenon of the bending stiffness distribution along the beam length of the cracked beam is quite reasonable, the natural frequencies are decreased as the crack sizes are increased, and the mode shapes are changed due to the crack. This results may be used to the vibration-based crack identification for the tapered cantilever pipe-type tower structures.

  • Many longitudinal pipes in ships are subject to considerable loads, caused by hull girder bending in the ships and/or thermal loads in some special pipes through which fluids with highly abnormal temperatures are conveyed. As these loads may cause failure in the pipes or their supporting structures, loops have been widely adopted to prevent such failure, based on the idea that they can lower the stress level in a pipe byabsorbing some portion of these loads. But as the loops also have some negative effects, such as causing extra manufacturing cost, deteriorating the function of the pipe, and occupying extra space, the number and dimensions of these loops need to be minimized. This research developed design formulas for pipe loops, modeling them as a spring element, for which the axial stiffness is calculated based on the beam theory, incorporating the flexibility effect of the straight portion of the pipe. The accuracy of the proposed design formulas was verified by comparing two results obtained from the proposed formulas and MSC/NASTRAN. This paper concludes with a sample application of the proposed formulas, showing their efficiency.
