Optical microscope was used to observe the difference of safranine penetration in Pinus densiflora, Pinus rigida, Pinus koraiensis and Larix kaempferi grown in Korea. It was found that Pinus koraiensis contained the highest number of ray parenchyma and ray tracheids. In longitudinal direction, latewood penetration was found higher than that of earlywood. The number of resin canals was found highest in Pinus koraiensis and lowest in Pinus rigida. The resin canal conducted safranine higher than longitudinal tracheids. In longitudinal direction, safranine diffused from longitudinal tracheid to ray parenchyma through the cross-field pits and from the longitudinal resin canal to ray parenchyma or longitudinal tracheid. Safranine diffused from longitudinal tracheid to its neighboring tracheid through bordered pit or ray parenchyma through the cross-field pits.
Radial and axial variations of microfibril angle (MFA) within stems of three commercial softwoods (Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis and Pinus rigida) grown in Korea were examined by iodine crystal deposition method. The average MFA were $16.4^{\circ}$ in Pinus densiflora, 14.4, in Pinus koraiensis, and $26.2^{\circ}$ in Pinus rigida, respectively. The MFA in earlywood and latewood decreased with age to about 15~20 years, and then remained almost constant. The MFA of latewood was slightly smaller than that of earlywood. The MFA in the three species was a little smaller at the base of stem and decreased slightly with increasing tree height, but no significant difference by height was identified only in earlywood of Pinus rigida. Consequently, it was considered that the MFA could be an useful index for identifying juvenile wood and adult wood of Pinus densiflora, Pinus. koraiensis and Pinus rigida.
The experimental study was carried out to evaluate the performance of underplanted Pinus koraiensis 2-2 seedlings in the closed canopy natural deciduous forest. Overstory density effects on seedling survival and growth were assessed 7 years after underplanting. Seedling survival rate was 80%, average height was 0.9m with minimum of 0.3m and maximum of 2.1m, and average diameter at butt end was 1.7cm with minimum of 1.4cm and maximum of 3.5cm. Compared with the growth rate of the pine plantation after clearcutting, the growth performance of underplanted pine seedlings was so poor that the height growth was less than 30% and diameter growth was less than 20%. Even though the Pinus koraiensis seedlings would be shade tolerant, the establishment and performance of underplanted Pinus koraiensis seedlings could be promoted by more than 50% of canopy regulation that provide adequate light at the forest floor and should exhibit a strong positive response following overstory removal by tending operation.

This study was conducted to examine the effect of tree density of Pinus koraiensis forest on the thermal comfort and the physiological response of human body in summer season. As the indicators of thermal comfort were used the predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percentage of dissatisfied (PPD), while the heart rate variability was used for the physiological indicator of subjects. The subjects were 15 physically healthy men and women in their 20s ($23.7{\pm}1.7$ years old). The subjects sat in each site to measure HRV for 5 minutes and the thermal comfort of each site was measured. As a results, it was proven by PMV and PPD that the Pinus koraiensis forest with 120% tree density was thermally more comfortable than the Pinus koraiensis forest with 80% tree density. In case of the subjects' physiological response, the Pinus koraiensis forest with 120% tree density showed significantly higher HF of HRV than the Pinus koraiensis forest with 80% tree density and significantly lower LF/HF. Therefore, the findings of this study scientifically proved that the Pinus koraiensis forest with 120% tree density is thermally more comfortable and physiologically more relaxing than the Pinus koraiensis forest with 80% tree density.
The essential oil from the cones of Pinus koraiensis was prepared after removing the seeds, and its chemical composition analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Hydrodistillation of the P. koraiensis cones yielded 1.07% (v/w) of essential oil, which was almost three times the amount of essential oil extracted from the needles of the same plant. Moreover, the antimicrobial activities of the oil against the growth of Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and fungi were evaluated using the agar disc diffusion method and broth microdilution method. Eighty-seven components, comprising about 96.8% of the total oil, were identified. The most abundant oil components were limonene (27.90%), ${\alpha}$-pinene (23.89%), ${\beta}$-pinene (12.02%), 3-carene(4.95%), ${\beta}$-myrcene (4.53%), isolongifolene (3.35%), (-)-bornyl acetate (2.02%), caryophyllene (1.71%), and camphene (1.54%). The essential oil was confirmed to have significant antimicrobial activities, especially against pathogenic fungal strains such as Candida glabrata YFCC 062 and Cryptococcus neoformans B 42419. Therefore, the present results indicate that the essential oil from the cones of Pinus koraiensis can be used in various ways as a nontoxic and environmentally friendly disinfectant.
Surveyed results on the slope of grain and the twist of sawn lumber of Pinus koraiensis, Larix leptolepis, and Pinus densiflora were summarized as follows: 1. The slope of grain of Pinus koraiensis has a Z-grain in the stem axis. The slope of grain was found to be the lowest at near to the pith and then constantly increased. At the height of 0.2m from the base of stem. a cross section of 35 annual rings was found to have a repeatedly increasing and decreasing slope of grain and then constantly decreased. At the height of 1.2m to 7.2m from the base of stem, the slope of grain increased conspicuously until the 10th annual ring, after which it increased near to the bark with repeatedly increasing and decreasing trends. 2. Pinus densiflora has a S-grain in the stem axis. The lowest slope of grain was found at near to the pith, and the highest in the 10 to 35 annual rings from the pith. 3. Larix leptolepis has a S-grain. At the height of 3.2m from the base of stem, the big fluctuation of the slope of grain was found without any particular trend. 4. The slope of grain and the twist between natural and reforested timber of Pinus koraiensis were found to be almost the same trend in viewpoint of the annual ring. The maximum slope of grain of imported Siberian timber of Pinus koraiensis was found at the 10 annual rings, which was quite similar to that of native species in Korea, but the big difference of the twist was found at 140 annual rings. 5. The twist was little at the mature wood of reforested Pinus koraiensis and Siberians and the duplicated part of mature and juvenile woods of those. On the contrary, the twist was great at the duplicated part of mature and juvenile woods of Pinus koraiensis. 6. The twist of Larix leptolepis showed the S-direction which coincided with that of slope of grain. The twist was greatest at the part of juvenile wood and little at the duplicated part of mature and juvenile woods, and little difference of twist was found between mature and juvenile woods. 7. Siberian larix having a minimum slope of grain showed the lowest twist, and the twist at the duplicated part of mature and juvenile woods showed a middle level of both mature and juvenile woods' portions.
Fungal endophytes are microfungi that live in plants without causing apparent symptoms of infection. This study was conducted to identify endophytic fungi isolated from leaves of coniferous trees in Bohyeon Mountain of Korea. We collected leaves of two species of coniferous trees, Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis, from 11 sites in the study area. A total 58 isolates were obtained and identified using molecular and morphological characteristics. Four species of endophytic fungi were isolated from P. densiflora: Lophodermium conigenum, Leotiomycetes sp., Septoria pini-thunbergii, and Polyporales sp., while two fungal species were isolated from P. koraiensis: Eurotiomycetes sp. and Rhytismataceae sp. The most frequently isolated species were L. conigenum and S. pini-thunbergii.
Radial variations of ray spacing and frequency of biseriate ray were examined in the woods of most commercially important Korean softwood species of Pinus koraiensis and Larix kaempferi. Ray spacing, or ray number per mm in cross section, averaged 4.6 and 9.0 in Pinus koraiensis and Larix kaempferi, respectively. Thus, rays of Larix kaempferi appeared to be more closely arranged than those of Pinus koraiensis. Ray spacing was the densest around pith, and then slowly decreased toward bark. In tangential section, biseriate ray frequency of Larix kaempferi was higher than that of Pinus koraiensis. Biseriate ray was designated, based on the number of cells of biseriate portion in vertical extent, as the type of B+1 (one cell high), B+2 (two cells high), and so on. The dominated type was B+1 in Pinus koraiensis but B+2 in Larix kaempferi. The biseriate ray types of B+3, B+4, and B+5 were occasionally found in earlywood. Interestingly, even B+6 and B+7 types were observed in Larix kaempferi. In conclusion, it was considered that ray spacing could be used for separating juvenile wood from adult wood. Also, characteristics of ray spacing and biseriate ray might be used for identifying these two species.

The study was aimed to understand the ecological status of the Maebongsan urban forest in Cheongju-si through investigating the vegetation, soil characteristics, and soil microarthropods. Phytosociological analysis for twenty plots revealed that the plant communities were classified into Pinus rigida community, Robinia pseudoacacia community, Castanea crenata community, Quercus acutissima community, Pinus strobus community, Pinus koraiensis community, and Larix kaempferi community. The importance value showed that afforestation tree species like Castanea crenata, Robinia pseudoacacia, and Pinus rigida dominate the urban forest. DBH analysis indicated that although the plant communities seem to be under the succession to Quercus forest, the dominance of Castanea crenata and Robinia pseudoacacia might still persist for several more decades. The properties of soils from the plant communities showed that loamy sand and sandy loam in soil texture, low organic matters, and severe acidification. The abundance of soil microarthropods were not different among the plant communities except Castanea crenata community and Pinus koraiensis community. The two communities showed especially low abundance of collembola and acarina. Thus, we can say that Castanea crenata community and Pinus koraiensis community seem to have been influenced strongly by anthropogenic activities.

This review investigated the types of physiologically active substances isolated and extracted from Pinus densiflora and koraiensis native to Republic of Korea, and the current status of research on their effectiveness and industrial use. They contain various bioactive substances including essential oils, polyphenols, resins, and stilbene derivatives. In recent, physiological activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, cataract prevention, and neuroprotection from extracts of Pinus densiflora and koraiensis have been identified by domestic researchers. The extracts have been used in different industrial fields like food, health functional foods, cosmetics, and household goods, but the high proportion of them is industrially made from exotic species. Therefore, various studies on industrial applicability are needed due to the lack of cases in which the activity is applied to actual products, with respect to the effects that have been scientifically recognized.
