  • The use of "clean fuels" such as butane, propane, and mixtures of these (LPG) is an attractive way to reduce exhaust emissions. In this study internal flow of the pintle type injector for LPG engine is studied. The breakup of liquid jet is the result of competing, unstable hydrodynamic forces acting on the liquid jet as it exits the nozzle. The nozzle geometry and up-stream injection conditions affect the characteristics of flow inside the nozzle, such as turbulence and cavitation bubbles. A set of calculations of the internal flow in a pintle type nozzle were performed using a two dimensional flow simulation under different nozzle geometry and upstream flow conditions. The calculation showed that the turbulent intensity and discharge coefficient are related to needle leading angle(.alpha.) and needle lift.edle lift.

  • The effect of pintle shapes and position to the thrust performance of Solid Rocket Motor was studied by experimental-aided Computational Fluid Dynamic(CFD). Among the turbulent models for RANS in Fluent, Spalart-Allmaras model was better agreement with the nozzle wall pressure distribution attained by cold-flow test than other models. When nozzle throat area was decreased, magnitude of thrust was increased. The bigger pintle size was, the more thrust of pintle tip pressure was obtained. Meanwhile the more thrust of nozzle and chamber pressure decreased. Hence, total thrust of big pintle was less than a small pintle under same throat area condition.

  • In this study, numerical simulations were performed for steady and unsteady state characteristics of length effects on linear pintle nozzles using the overset grid method. Nozzles and pintles are created separately by an auto grid generation program to use the overset grid method. Appropriate turbulent models and numerical methods are selected for the validation of simulations. Pintle shapes are chosen from five types, with differences in the ratio of length and diameter. The longer the pintle length, the greater the thrust and thrust coefficient. The chamber pressure tendency of steady-state and unsteady-state are different for various pintle velocities. The thrust of the nozzle exit responds to changes in the nozzle throat in the unsteady-state, and the speed of pressure propagation wave generated by movement of the pintle is considered to predict the major factor of performance.

  • In order to determine whether three-dimensional effects exist in a pintle nozzle of axisymmetric shape, a three-dimensional numerical analysis was performed. The compressibility correction was implemented with the k-${\omega}$ SST turbulence model to predict the complex flow separation transition in acceptable accuracy. Recirculation zones were observed at both the front end and rear faces of the pintle, and the flow through the pintle nozzle conveyed complex shock wave structures. Three-dimensional effects that resulted from the reasonable flow separation location were noted, and a trace of the transient pressure increase was observed, mismatched by a two-dimensional axi-symmetric analysis.

  • In this study, analysis of the flow characteristics of pintle-controlled nozzle with split-line TVC system and the thrust performance prediction was performed. The numerical computation was verified by comparing the thrust coefficient derived from the analysis results with the experimental data. By applying the same numerical analysis technique, the flow characteristics of nozzle were confirmed according to operating altitude, pintle stroke position and TVC angle with the 1/10 scale. As the TVC angle increased, thrust loss occurred and the tendency of AF was different depending on the position of the pintle stroke. Based on the analysis results, the relation of thrust coefficient was derived by applying the response surface methods. The thrust performance model with a slight difference of 1.2% on average from the analysis result was generated.

  • In this study, basic research on the pressure control using driven pintle of modulatable thruster is presented. For this purpose, pintle thruster and pintle shape was developed. The actuator model was selected by calculating pintle load using Fluent software. Preliminary unsteady experimental results show that huge pressure oscillation is occurred as the pintle approach toward nozzle wall. From the preliminary experimental results, we could see possibility of pressure control of the modulatable thruster.

  • Experimental and computational study for steady-state pintle driven nozzle throat flow are carried out by changing four pintle shape. Results show that thruster performance is influenced by pintle shape greatly. This attributes to the distorted throat area and chamber pressure change as the pintle shape and its penetration.

  • A design factor analysis was conducted to reduce the thrust reduction in the off-design, due to the driving of the aerospike pintle nozzle. The close (NPR 100) as well as the open (NPR 11) stroke were fixed, as under-expansion conditions. The pintle contour, pintle head radius (R), cowl angle (θ), and cowl exit length (L) were selected as design factors. The change in thrust was analyzed, using a verified numerical analysis technique. First, the pintle head radius and the length of the cowl exit had little influence on the thrust. The cowl angle changed the mass flow rate by affecting the effective nozzle throat area, and created a reverse pressure gradient at the cowl exit. As a result of applying the dual aerospike contour, it was confirmed that the thrust in the design-off increased by approximately 1.2%, compared to the reference case and by approximately 3.4% compared to the worst case.

  • Theoretical thrust equations for the diverse nozzle expansion condition were derived. By using the obtained thrust equations, parametric studies were carried out to estimate the effect of pressure exponent, minimum operation pressure, ambient pressure and extinguishment pressure on thrust modulation performance in pintle-nozzle solid rocket motors. Analysis results showed that thrust turndown ratio can be easily attained by small nozzle-throat area variation at high pressure exponent, low minimum operation pressure, high ambient pressure and high extinguishment pressure condition. At those conditions, the highest chamber pressure to obtain the intended thrust turndown ratio can be minimized.

  • In this study, determination method of initial optimal nozzle expansion in pintle rocket was investigated. The initial optimal initial nozzle expansion was decided by maximizing the mass-averaged thrust coefficient that is calculated from thrust coefficient of minimum and maximum chamber pressure. The determination of initial optimal initial nozzle expansion was equivalent to that of the minimum propellant mass which was required for obtaining the desired mission performance. The highest pressure, thrust turndown ratio and total impulse ratio effected on the initial optimal nozzle expansion. Among them, total impulse ratio had great influence on the initial optimal nozzle expansion.
