  • The effect of texture of an extruded OFHC Cu rod on its sliding wear has been explored. Disk specimens with three different orientations were machined from the Cu rod for the wear test; surfaces of the disk were perpendicular ($0^{\circ}$), inclined with a specific angle ($45^{\circ}$), and parallel ($90^{\circ}$) to the extrusion axis of the rod. The texture was analyzed using an X-ray goniometer by measuring {111}, {200}, and {220} pole figures of each specimen. The analyzed texture was correlated with wear-test results of the Cu specimen. Dry sliding wear tests were performed at room temperature using a pin-on-disk wear tester against an Al2O3 ball. Applied load, sliding distance, sliding speed were fixed as 20 N, 200 m, and 0.5 m/sec, respectively. The $45^{\circ}$-inclined (to the extrusion axis) disk specimen showed the lowest wear resistance with the least data scatters. It has been found that distribution of cube texture strongly influences wear rate of the extruded Cu rod.

  • Pin-on-disk and hardness tests using mechanical components of M-20J aircraft braking system were performed to identify the friction and wear characteristics. The intention of this work was also to analyze a 5-year term maintenance record of an M-20J aircraft. used for flight training at Hankook Aviation University, and to determine the reliability of the brake system of an M-20J aircraft. The mean wear coefficients of the lining sliding against the brake disk were compared between the test and reliability estimation to obtain a predictive wear model.

  • Microscopic examination for the morphological estimation of wear debris on the oil-lubrcated moving system is an accepted method for machine condition and fault diagnosis. However wear particle anaysis has not been widely accepted industry because it is dependent on expert interpretation of particle morphology and relies on subjective assessment criteria. This paper was undertaken to estimate the morphology of wear debris on the oil-lubricated movig system by computer image analysis. The wear test was performed under different sliding conditions using a wear test device made in our laboratory and wear testing specimen of the pin-on-disk-type was rubbed in pararline series base oil. In order to describe characteristics of debris of various shape and size, four shape parameters (50% volumetric diameter, aspect, roundness and reflectivity) have been developed and outlined in the paper. A system using such techniques promises to obviate the need for subjective, human interpretation of particle morphology in machine condition monitoring.

  • A magnetic clutch consists of pulley and disk. It delivers and isolates the power needed for the operation of the compressor used in automotive air conditioning system. To improve the performance, efficiency and durability of automotive air conditioning system, appropriate design of pulley, disk and system working parameters(the magnitude of magnetic force, and so on) is necessary. For that goal, it is required to understand the friction characteristics of magnetic clutch for the initial operating time. In this study, friction tests were carried out in order to investigate the effect of sliding velocity on the friction characteristics of magnetic clutch using pin-on-disk type friction and wear tester. For experiments, pulley and disk used in real automotive air conditioning system were considered. Friction experiments were conducted under various sliding velocities, and coefficients of kinetic friction were obtained. Under the experimental conditions considered in this study, the coefficients of kinetic friction increased with the increase of test number(sliding distance) and decreased with the increase of sliding velocity.

  • This paper was undertaken to analyze the morphology of wear debris generated from lubricated moving machine surfaces by image processing. The lubricati, ng wear test was performed under different experimental conditions using the wear test device made in our laboratory and wear test specimen of the pin on disk type wear rubbed in paraffme series base oil, by varying applied load, sliding distance. A system using such techniques promises to obviate the need for subjective, human interpretation of particle morphology in machine condition monitoring, thus to overcome many of the difficulties with current methods and to facilitate wider use of wear particle analysis in machine condition monitoring.

  • This study is to investigate the wear behaviors of thermally sprayed ceramic coating by a pin-on-disk wear testing machine. The test specimens were plasma sprayed TiO2 coating material on carbon steel substrate(S45C) with Ni-4.5%Al alloy bond coating. Wear characteristics, friction coefficient and wear rates, were conducted at the three kinds of loads and velosities. Wear environments were dry and lubrication friction. The friction coefficients of TiO2 coating specimen in dry friction were almost same according to increase the friction velocity. The wear rate increased when the friction force is high. In lubrication friction, the wear hardly occured and friction coefficient was about 0.1. The adhesiveness of TiO2 in lubrication friction is larger than that in dry one.

  • This paper was undertaken to recognize the pattern of the wear debris by neural network as a link for the development of diagnosis system for movable condition of the lubricated machine surface. The wear test was carried out under different experimental conditions using the wear test device was made in laboratory and wear testing specimen of the pin-on-disk type were rubbed in paraffine series base oil, by varying applied load, sliding distance and mating material. The neural network has been used to pattern recognition of four parameter (diameter, elongation, complex and contrast) of the wear debris and learned the friction condition of five values (material 3, applied load 1, sliding distance 1). The three kinds of the wear debris had a different pattern characteristic and recognized the friction condition and materials very well by the neural network. The characteristic parameter of the large wear debris over a few micron size enlarged recognition ability.

  • In this study, the dynamic characteritics in various loading methods for wear tester were investigated experimentally. As for the dead-weight, the pneumatic, and the hydraulic method, the load control performance against external disturbances was estimated under the several loading conditions like the different sliding speed, the varied normal load, and the misaligument. The hydraulic loading method showed the most stable loading performance of all the loading methods in the experiment.
