  • A voice coil actuator with moving coil type for scanning mirror system of barcode reader has been developed. The actuator has a simple structure including a magnet, a coil and a pin. The performance of the actuator is analyzed by a linearized theoretical model. And the dynamic performance of the proposed actuator is predicted through motor constant and restoring constant obtained by finite element simulations. The theoretical model was verified by the prototype which has 64 Hz resonance frequency and 60 deg reflecting angle. We also discovered that that 3 V input can make the actuator rotate over 61.8 deg reflecting angle at 50 Hz resonance frequency. The proposed actuator can simplify its driving configuration because of its implementation of open-loop control.

  • Background/Aims: Glutathione S-transferase M1 (GSTM1) is a multifunctional enzyme that plays a critical role in the detoxification of varieties of carcinogenic metabolites. Many studies have been conducted to investigate the association between GSTM1 polymorphism and nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) risk, but the findings among those studies are inconsistent. To assess this relationship more precisely, we performed a meta-analysis of all available studies on the subject. Methods: Case-control studies were identified by searching Pubmed, Embase, ISI Web of Science, and Wanfang databases through September 6, 2012. We used the pooled odds ratio (OR) with its corresponding 95% confidence interval (95%CI) to evaluate the association of GSTM1 polymorphism with NPC susceptibility. Subgroup analyses by pathological types, sex and smoking status were performed to further identify the association. Results: Overall, 11 published studies with 1,513 cases and 2,802 controls were finally included into this meta-analysis according to the inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis of total studies showed that the null genotype of GSTM1 was significantly associated with increased risk of NPC, when comparing with the non-null genotype (OR=1.51, 95%CI=1.33-1.72, POR<0.001). The association was still statistically significant in subgroup analysis of patients with nasopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OR=1.73, 95%CI=1.24-2.42, POR=0.001). Males with the null genotype of GSTM1 were more likely to subject to NPC than females. In addition, the association between the null genotype of GSTM1 and NPC risk was strongest in individuals with exposure to smoking. Sensitivity analysis by sequential omission of any individual studies one at a time further demonstrated the significant association. Conclusions: The findings suggest that the null genotype of GSTM1 is a risk factor for NPC, and there is a gene-smoking interaction in this association.

  • Substitution of hip and knee joints by CoCr alloys is in great demand due to their high wear resistance and good biocompatibility. Understanding of tribocorrosion in joint replacements requires study of variables such as coefficient of friction and the choice of a proper corrosive medium in wear-corrosion tests carried out in the lab. The objective of this study was to characterize tribocorrosion behaviour of CoCr alloy with low (LCCoCr) and high carbon (HCCoCr) contents in several corrosive media: NaCl, Phosphate Buffer Solution (PBS), and PBS with hyaluronic acid (PBS-HA). Tribocorrosion tests were carried out on a pin-on-disk tribometer with an integrated electrochemical cell. A normal load of 5N was applied on the alumina ball counterpart at a rotation rate of 120 rpm. Coefficient of friction (COF) was measured and tribocorrosion behaviour was characterized by in situ application of electrochemical techniques. HCCoCr alloy immersed in PBS-HA showed the best tribocorrosion behaviour with the lowest COF. In this case, in situ measurement of corrosion potential and the impedance data under wear corrosion process showed an active state while passive film was continuously destroyed without possibility of regeneration.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the lower extremities joint moment pattern by two types of service motion in tennis pinpoint and platform stance. Seven skilled high school tennis players participated, and the kinematics were recorded by the Vicon motion analysis system. For the gathering and analysis of the data Workstation, Bodybuilder and polygon were used. joint moments and Ground Reaction Forces for the phases involved were analyzed with the following results. There was a different moment pattern for the lower extremities between the two serve motions. For the platform stance there was only a large dorsal flexion moment but for the pinpoint stance there were other large moments. The flexion and maximum moment of the lower extremities occurred at the point of change from back swing and to the forward swing motion. Therefore, this data provides evidence that there is a high risk of injury at this point.

  • Adverse side-effects and lack of scientific validation of some chemotherapeutic agents prevent the use of many traditional medicines claimed to have anti-cancer effects. Ethanolic extract of Conium maculatum has long been used in traditional and alternative systems of medicine including homeopathy for the treatment of glandular enlargements, cancerous tumours or hard lumps of testicles, prostate, ovaries, breasts and/ or uterus, particularly in the breast. However, if and how it acts still remains scientifically unknown. This study aims to test if Conium extract (CE), used as mother tincture of Conium in homeopathy, has demonstrable anti-cancer potentials without having much cytotoxicity in normal cells. Cytotoxicity of the drug was tested by conducting MTT assay on both normal (peripheral blood mononuclear cells) and HeLa cells. We also evaluated DNA fragmentation and DNA damage by DAPI and diphenylamine assay. The LDH activity assay was done to evaluate the percentages of apoptosis and necrosis. ROS accumulation also was evaluated to pin-point the actual events of apoptosis. Administration of drug clearly demonstrated its anti-cancer potentials as evidenced by the DNA damage analysis. The ROS activity also increased in case of the CE treated cells. LDH data revealed that the mode of cell death was mainly apoptotic and not necrotic. CE appears to induce apoptosis of cancer cells through ROS mediated pathway, and has negligible cytotoxicity against normal cells.

  • In manufacturing operations, oil plays a crucial role in reducing friction and wear among interacting surfaces at varying velocities, loads, and temperature. Hydrocarbon oil is considered the origin of lubrication oils. However, this base oil has been limited in its use as it is a principal cause of pollution. This research focuses on identifying a biodegradable base oil lubricant that possesses a stable coefficient of friction and viscosity with temperature. Friction analysis is conducted by employing a pin on a disk tribotester with a fixed load of 10 N at varying sliding speeds ranging from 0.06 m/s to 0.34 m/s. Oil viscosity analysis is perfomed at room temperature by using a rotary viscometer. Tests are performed using canola oil and paraffin oil as lubricants. The results indicate that the viscosity of canola oil is more efficient than paraffin oil. The non-dimensional characteristic number according to the Stribeck curve reveals an elastohydrodynamic lubrication regime with canola oil lubrication. A comparison of both lubricants reveals that, the friction efficiency of canola oil and paraffin oil does not differ considerably. However, the friction in canola oil is observed to decrease more than that in paraffin oil at an elevated sliding speed. The tests confirm that canola oil is potent in minimizing the friction coefficient of SCM440 bodies interacting with one another as well as acted upon by load.

  • Cubic boron nitride (c-BN) is a promising material for use in many potential applications because of its outstanding physical properties such as high thermal stability, high abrasive wear resistance, and super hardness. Even though 316L austenitic stainless steel (STS) has poor wear resistance causing it to be toxic in the body due to wear and material chips, 316L STS has been used for implant biomaterials in orthopedics due to its good corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Therefore, in the present study, c-BN films with a $B_4C$ layer were applied to a 316L STS specimen in order to improve its wear resistance. The deposition of the c-BN films was performed using an r.f. (13.56 MHz) magnetron sputtering system with a $B_4C$ target. The coating layers were characterized using XPS and SEM, and the mechanical properties were investigated using a nanoindenter. The friction coefficient of the c-BN coated 316L STS steel was obtained using a pin-on-disk according to the ASTM G163-99. The thickness of the obtained c-BN and $B_4C$ were about 220 nm and 630 nm, respectively. The high resolution XPS spectra analysis of B1s and N1s revealed that the c-BN film was mainly composed of $sp^3$ BN bonds. The hardness and elastic modulus of the c-BN measured by the nanoindenter were 46.8 GPa and 345.7 GPa, respectively. The friction coefficient of the c-BN coated 316L STS was decreased from 3.5 to 1.6. The wear property of the c-BN coated 316L STS was enhanced by a factor of two.

  • AZO (Al doped ZnO) thin films were deposited on the quartz substrates with thickness variation from 25 to 300 nm by using PLD (pulsed laser deposition). XRD (x-ray diffractometer), SPM (scanning probe microscopy), Hall effect measurement and uv-visible spectrophotometer were employed to investigate the structural, morphological, electrical and optical properties of the thin films. XRD results demonstrated that films were preferrentially oriented along the c-axis and crystallinity of film was improved with increase of film thickness. As for the surface morphologies, the mean diameter and root mean square of grains were increased as the film thickness was increased. When the film thickness was 200 nm, the lowest resistivity of $4.25{\times}10^{-4}\;{\Omega}cm$ obtained with carrier concentration of $6.84{\times}10^{20}\;cm^{-3}$ and mobility of $21.4\;cm^2/V{\cdot}S$. All samples showed more than 80% of transmittance in the visible range. Upon these results, it is found that the samples thickness can affect their structural, morphological, optical and electrical properties. This study suggests that the resistivity can be improved by controlling film thickness.

  • In this study, the wear characteristics of five different dental composite resins cured by conventional halogen light and LED light sources were investigated. Five different dental composite resins of Surefil, Z100, Dyract AP, Fuji II LC and Compoglass were worn against a zirconia ceramic ball using a pin-on-disk type wear tester with 15N contact force in a reciprocal sliding motion of sliding distance of 10mm/cycle at 1Hz under the room temperature dry condition. The wear variations of dental composite resins were linearly increased as the number of cycles increased. It was observed that the wear resistances of these specimens were in the order of Dyract AP > Surefil > Compoglass > Z100 > Fuji II LC. On the morphological observations by SEM, the large crack formation on the sliding track of Fuji II LC specimen was the greatest among all resin composites. Dyract AP showed less wear with few surface damage. There is no significant difference in wear performance between conventional halogen light curing and light emitting diodes curing sources. It indicates that a light emitting diodes (LED) source can replace a halogen light source as curing unit for composite resin restorations.
