  • The Korean Prototype Gen-IV sodium-cooled fast reactor (PGSFR) is supposed to be loaded with a relatively-costly low-enriched U fuel, while its envisaged transuranic fuels are not available for transmutation. In this work, the U-enrichment reduction by improving the neutron economy is pursued to save the fuel cost. To improve the neutron economy of the core, a new reflector material, PbO, has been introduced to replace the conventional HT9 reflector in the current PGSFR core. Two types of PbO reflectors are considered: one is the conventional pin-type and the other one is an inverted configuration. The inverted PbO reflector design is intended to maximize the PbO volume fraction in the reflector assembly. In addition, the core radial configuration is also modified to maximize the performance of the PbO reflector. For the baseline PGSFR core with several reflector options, the U enrichment requirement has been analyzed and the fuel depletion analysis is performed to derive the equilibrium cycle parameters. The linear reactivity model is used to determine the equilibrium cycle performances of the core. Impacts of the new PbO reflectors are characterized in terms of the cycle length, neutron leakage, radial power distribution, and operational fuel cost.

  • The SuperCritical Water-cooled Reactor (SCWR) pursues high power density to reduce its capital cost. The fast spectrum SCWR, called a super fast reactor, can be designed with a higher power density than thermal spectrum SCWR. The mechanism of increasing the average power density of the super fast reactor is studied theoretically and numerically. Some key parameters affecting the average power density, including fuel pin outer diameter, fuel pitch, power peaking factor, and the fraction of seed assemblies, are analyzed and optimized to achieve a more compact core. Based on those sensitivity analyses, a compact super fast reactor is successfully designed with an average power density of 294.8 W/$cm^3$. The core characteristics are analyzed by using three-dimensional neutronics/thermal-hydraulics coupling method. Numerical results show that all of the design criteria and goals are satisfied.

  • The methods and performance of a fast reactor multigroup cross section (XS) generation code EXUS-F are described that is capable of directly processing Evaluated Nuclear Data File format nuclear data files. RECONR of NJOY is used to generate pointwise XS data, and Doppler broadening is incorporated by the Gauss-Hermite quadrature method. The self-shielding effect is incorporated in the ultrafine group XSs in the resolved and unresolved resonance ranges. Functions to generate scattering transfer matrices and fission spectrum matrices are realized. The extended transport approximation is used in zero-dimensional calculations, whereas the collision probability method and the method of characteristics are used for one-dimensional cylindrical geometry and two-dimensional hexagonal geometry problems, respectively. Verification calculations are performed first for various homogeneous mixtures and cylindrical problems. It is confirmed that the spectrum calculations and the corresponding multigroup XS generations are performed adequately in that the reactivity errors are less than 50 pcm with the McCARD Monte Carlo solutions. The nTRACER core calculations are performed with the EXUS-F-generated 47 group XSs for the two-dimensional Advanced Burner Reactor 1000 benchmark problem. The reactivity error of 160 pcm and the root mean square error of the pin powers of 0.7% indicate that EXUF-F generates properly the broad-group XSs.

  • A 3-year-old castrated male Siberian husky was presented for evaluation after being hit by a car. On physical examination, the dog showed open-mouth, displacement of mandible and hypersalivation with blood ting. The base of tongue was transected almost 80% on the bias from right dorsal side to the left ventral side. Radiography demonstrated separation of mandible symphysis, and fracture of right condyle and vertical ramus. After debridement of the necrotic tissue, tongue apposition with simple interrupted suture was performed. Mandibular symphysis, condyle and mandibular vertical ramus fractures were fixed using pin, cerclage wire, T-plate, and K-wires. The mouth was irrigated daily using chlorhexidine after surgery. The sutures that were loose here or untied at tongue were re-sutured under sedation. The transected tongue was healed and recovered its normal movement after 6 weeks.

  • The paper presents an alternative way to classical stereocorrelation. First, 2D image processing of random patterns is described. Sub-pixel displacements are determined using phase analysis. Then distortion evaluation is presented. The distortion is identified without any assumption on the lens model because of the use of a grid technique approach. Last, shape measurement and shape variation is caught by fringe projection. Analysis is based on two pin-hole assumptions for the video-projector and the camera. Then, fringe projection is coupled to in-plane displacement to give rise to 3D measurement set-up. Metrological characterization shows a resolution comparable to classical (stereo) correlation technique ($1/100^{th}$ pixel). Spatial resolution seems to be an advantage of the method, because of the use of temporal phase stepping (shape measurement, 1 pixel) and windowed Fourier transform (in plane displacements measurement, 9 pixels). Two examples are given. First one is the study of skin properties; second one is a study on leather fabric. In both cases, results are convincing, and have been exploited to give mechanical interpretation.

  • A finite element (FE) model for analyzing slender reinforced high-strength concrete (HSC) columns under biaxial eccentric loading is formulated in terms of the Euler-Bernoulli theory. The cross section of columns is divided into discrete concrete and reinforcing steel fibers so as to account for varied material properties over the section. The interaction between axial and bending fields is introduced in the FE formulation so as to take the large-displacement or P-delta effects into consideration. The proposed model aims to be simple, user-friendly, and capable of simulating the full-range inelastic behavior of reinforced HSC slender columns. The nonlinear model is calibrated against the experimental data for slender column specimens available in the technical literature. By using the proposed model, a numerical study is carried out on pin-ended slender HSC square columns under axial compression and biaxial bending, with investigation variables including the load eccentricity and eccentricity angle. The calibrated model is expected to provide a valuable tool for more efficiently designing HSC columns.

  • In the present study, the performances of a fin-tube evaporator and three PF evaporators for a heat pump dryer were experimentally investigated. Among the tested evaporators, the PF3 type evaporator showed the highest values of heat transfer capacity and dehumidification performance, while the fin-tube evaporator had the lowest values. PF3 showed better performance compared to PF1 and PF2, due to the large pin pitch, which leads to more draining for dehumidified water. Also, the $45^{\circ}$ inclined PF evaporator presented better performance than that of the $90^{\circ}$ inclined PF evaporator, owing to its easier draining characteristics. The effect of air velocity was revealed to be quite large. When the air velocity increased by 20%, the heat transfer capacity and dehumidification performance increased 43%/11%, 48%/13% and 54%/23% for PF1, PF2 and PF3, respectively.

  • A water treatment utility in South Korea operates a large system of pressurized hollow fiber membrane (PHFM) modules. The optimal selection of membrane module for the full scale plant was critical issue and carried out using Risk-based Life Cycle Cost (RbLCC) analysis based on the historical data of operation and maintenance. The RbLCC analysis was used in the process of decision-making for replacing aged modules. The initial purchasing cost and the value at risk during operation were considered together. The failure of modules occurs stochastically depending on the physical deterioration with usage over time. The life span of module was used as a factor for the failure of Poisson's probability model, which was used to obtain the probability of failure during the operation. The RbLCC was calculated by combining the initial cost and the value at risk without its warranty term. Additionally, the properties of membrane were considered to select the optimum product. Results showed that the module's life span in the system was ten years (120 month) with safety factor. The optimum product was selected from six candidates membrane for a full scale water treatment facility. This method could be used to make the optimum and rational decision for the operation of membrane water purification facility.

  • 'Ionic wind' is phenomenon induced by corona discharge which occurs when large electric potential is applied to electrodes with high curvature. The ionic wind has advantage that it could generate forced convective flow without any external energy like separate pump. In this study, 'pin-mesh' arrangement is utilized for experiments. First, optimization of configuration is conducted with local momentum of ionic wind behind the mesh. Empirical equation for prediction about velocity profile was derived using the measured results. Secondly, the enhancement of mass transfer rate of acetone with ionic wind was analyzed. Also, the drying efficiency using a fan which has same flow rate was compared with ionic wind for identification of additional chemical reaction. At last, the drying process of organic solvent was visualized with image processing. As a result, it was shown that the use of ionic wind could dry organic matter four times faster than the natural condition.
