It is known that diesel engines have the disadvantage of high emission levels of NOx and PM. Therefore, many combustion strategies have been developed to reduce these harmful NOx and PM emissions in a diesel engine. Among these strategies, HCCI(Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) and PCCI(Premixed Charge Compression Ignition) are the most popular as these can reduce NOx and PM simultaneously. However, when a single fuel like diesel is applied, it is difficult to control the combustion phase and this can lead to power reduction. In this study, premixed gasoline and pilot diesel were used to overcome the problems of controllability of the combustion phase and harmful emissions. We injected gasoline directly into the combustion chamber and the gasoline/air mixture was ignited with a pilot diesel fuel near the top dead center. The results showed that the combustion and emission characteristics of dual-fuel combustion were comparable to those of conventional diesel combustion. When we applied the dual-fuel PCCI combustion concept, more than 90 % of NOx and PM emission was reduced simultaneously without significant degradation of efficiency compared to conventional diesel combustion.
The capability of pilot injection with small fuel quantity at all engine operating conditions is one of the main feature of the common rail direct injection system. The purpose of the pilot injection is to lower the engine noise and to reduce the NOx emissions. This study describes the pilot spray structure characteristics of the common-rail diesel injectors with different electric driving characteristics, including solenoid-driven and piezo-driven type. Namely three common-rail injectors with different electric current wave were investigated in this study. The pilot spray characteristics such as spray speed, spray tip penetration, and spray angle were obtained by spray images, which is measured by the back diffusion light illumination method with optical system for high-speed temporal photography. As this research results, it was found that pilot injection of common-rail system was effected by rate of injection with different electrical characteristic for injector driving.

The characteristics of combustion and emissions were investigated in a single cylinder DI diesel engine equipped with a common rail injection system. This study presents an experimental study of the effect of engine speed, injection timing, injection pressure and pilot injection timing on the combustion and exhaust emissions. The engine speeds were 1000 and 2000rpm and the corresponding injection pressures were 50 and 100MPa. Experimental results show that NOx emissions decrease with retarded injection timing, while HC and CO emissions increases. Higher injection pressure increases NOx with lower soot emissions. For the case with the pilot injection prior to main injection, the ignition delay is shortened and the premixed combustion ratio decreases. Also NOx and soot emissions are decreased with increase of pilot injection advance.
An experimental study was performed to investigate the characteristics of combustion pressure and exhaust emissions when the pilot injection timing and EGR rate were changed in a CRDI 4-cylinder diesel engine. The pilot injection timing and EGR rate have a significant impact on the combustion and emission characteristics of diesel engine. In this study, the pilot injection timing and EGR rate variation were conducted to 2000rpm of engine speed with torque 50Nm. Combustion pressure and heat release rate were decreased under high EGR rate conditions but increased under the pilot injection timing $20^{\circ}$(BTDC). IMEP and the maximum pressure in cylinder(Pmax) were decreased under the same injection timing with the increase of EGR rate. The NOx emission was decreased with increasing the EGR rate. On the other hand, in the same injection timing conditions, CO, HC, $CO_2$ emissions were increased with increasing the EGR rate.
future exhaust emission limits for diesel-driven passenger cars will force the automotive company to significantly develop of the new technologies of diesel engine respectively of the drive assemblies. As we know, the contributions of soot and nitrogen oxide is the main problems in diesel engine. Recently, as a result, the pilot injection of common-rail fuel injection system recognizes an alternative function to solve an environmental problem. This study describes the effect of the nozzle structure and driven characteristic of injector on pilot injection fur a passenger car common-rail system. The pilot spray structure such as spray tip penetration, spray speed and spray angle were obtained by high speed images, which is measured by the Mie scattering method with optical system fur high-speed temporal photography. Also the CFD analysis was carried out for fuel behavior under high pressure in between needle and nozzle of injector for common-rail system to know the condition of initial injection at experiment test. It was found that solenoid-driven injector with 5-hole was faster than 6-hole injector in spray speed at same conditions and piezo-driven injector showed faster response than solenoid injector.
This paper described the effect of the multiple injections on the emission characteristics and combustion stability in a common rail diesel engine. In order to investigate the influence of multiple injections in a passenger car diesel engine, the injection strategy was varied with pilot injection, post injection and one main injection at various conditions. Based on the experimental results, the combustion and emissions characteristics were analyzed for the various injection strategies such as main, pilot-main, double-pilot-main, double- pilot-main-post injection strategy. It is revealed that the $NO_X$, HC and CO emissions are reduced by double pilot and post injection at medium load, however, soot emission is increased. Also, in the case of multiple injection, the combustion pressure is increased smoothly near the TDC and the coefficient of variation and fuel consumptions are decreased.
The effects of triple (pilot, main and after) injection on combustion and emission characteristics in a HSDI (High-Speed Direct Injection) diesel engine were investigated using a single-cylinder optical diesel engine equipped with a common-rail injection system. The pilot injection affected the spray and combustion evolution of the following main injection. It was found that the pilot injection reduced the ignition delay, which led to lowered NOx (Nitric Oxides) level, and increased IMEP (Indicated Mean Effective Pressure) due to slow combustion pace during an expansion stroke. The after-injection was shown to be effective in reducing PM (Particulate Matter) even when a small amount of fuel was added. The results suggest that a proper combination of individual injection strategy could bring about a good synergetic effect on engine performance and emission.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of pilot injection strategy on the combustion and emissions characteristics in a four cylinder common-rail direct injection diesel engine fueled with biodiesel(soybean oil) blend. The tested fuel was mixed of 20% biodiesel and 80% ULSD(Ultra low sulfur diesel) by volume ratio. The experiments were performed under two load conditions, and results were compared with those of single injection. The experimental results showed that the ignition delay of BD20 was shorter than compared to that of ULSD in the case of low load condition. Also, the fuel consumption of BD20 was more higher than that of ULSD. Fuel consumption by applied pilot injection strategy were generally decreased compared with that of single injection. In the case of pilot injection, the exhaust emissions such as CO and HC emissions were decreased compared to the single injection.
Due to its carbon-neutral nature, biogas generated from anaerobic digestion or fermentation of biodegradable wastes is one of the important renewable energy sources to reduce global warming. It is mainly composed of methane and various inert gases such as $CO_2$ and $N_2$, and the actual composition of biogas significantly varies depending on the origin of anaerobic digestion process. Therefore, in order to effectively utilize this fuel as an energy source for electricity, it is important to develop power generation engines which can successfully apply biogas with significant composition variations. In this study, efforts have been made to develop a diesel-biogas duel fuel engine as a way to achieve such a stable power generation. The effects of diesel fuel injection quantity and pressure on stable combustion and engine performance were investigated, and an impact of diesel fuel atomization was discussed. The engine test results show that there exists a 2 stage combustion which consists of diesel pilot fuel burning and premixed biogas/air mixture burning in dual fuel engine operation and optimum diesel injection parameters were suggested for biogases with various compositions and heating values.
