Oil sands, which are largely distributed in Canada and Venezuela, are a mixture of crude oil and sandy soils. In order to extract crude oil from oil sands, construction of massive oil sand plants is required. Generally, the typically-used foundation types of the oil sand plant are driven piles and cast-in-place piles. Most of the oil sand plants are located in cold and remote regions. Installation of driven piles in frozen or organic surface soils is difficult due to high resistance and installation equipment accessability, while the cast-in-place pile has concrete curing problem due to cold temperature. Helical pile can be installed quickly and easily using rotation with a little help of vertical load. As the installation of helical pile is available using a small and light-weight installation equipment, accessibility of installation equipment is improved. The helical pile has an advantage of easy removal by rotation in reverse direction compared with that of installation. Furthermore, reuse of removed helical piles is possible when the piles are structurally safe. In this study, the behavior of helical piles varying helix pitch was analyzed based on the numerical analysis results. Numerical model was calibrated based on the results of model helical pile tests in laboratory. The ultimate helical pile loads, the displacement of each helix attached to the shaft of the helical pile, and the load sharing ratio of each helix were analyzed.
Recently, foundation designs based on piled raft concept have been increasing, where the piles are required not to ensure the overall stability of the foundation but to act as settlement reducer. When a concrete track is constructed on soft ground, excessive settlements may occur, while it rarely has bearing capacity problems. In this case, the settlement of the concrete track may be effectively reduced by arranging a small number of small-diameter piles beneath the track. This paper presents the effect of pile installation on the reduction of concrete track's settlement. A 3D finite difference method was employed to model the piled concrete tracks. A parametric study was carried out to assess the effect of varying soil condition and pile arrangements. From the analysis results, it is verified that the effect of the pile installation is significant to effectively reduce the settlement of concrete track. Optimal number of pile rows and pile spacings was proposed for the economical design of a piled concrete track. The bearing mechanism of piles was also investigated by analyzing load sharing characteristics of pile according to soil conditions and pile arrangements.
In this study, the large scale model tests were executed to estimate the Load Sharing Ratio (LSR) of raft in a piled footing under various conditions. The conditions such as the subsoil type, pile length, pile spacing, away type and pile installation method etc. were varied in the pile loading tests about the free-standing group piles and a piled footing. As a result of this study, it was found that there was no difference in the load-settlement curves, resulting from the pile installation method and subsoil type. The piles supported most of the external load until a yielding load of the piled footing, but the raft supported a considerable load after a yielding load. As the relative density of sands increased, the LSR decreased. As the pile spacing was wider and the pile length increased, there was a tendancy for the LSR to increase. But it was also found that the LSR was not affected by the pile installation method and the subsoil type.
Current design of pile group is based on the estimation of the overall bearing capacity of a pile group from that of a single pile using a group efficiency. However, the behaviors of a pile group are influenced by various factors such as the method of pile installation, pile-soil-pile interaction, cap-soil-pile interaction, etc. Thus, it is practically impossible to take into account these factors reasonably with the only group efficiency. In this paper, a new method for the design of pile groups is proposed, where the significant factors affecting the behavior of a pile group are considered separately by adopting several efficiencies. Furthermore, in the proposed method, the load transfer characteristics of piles and the difference of pile behaviors with respect to the pile locations in group can be taken into account. The efficiencies for the method are determined using the settlement failure criterion, which is consistent with the concept of allowable settlement fur structures. The efficiencies calculated from the results of existing model tests are presented, and the bearing capacity of a pile group in the other model test is calculated and compared with that from the test result to verify the validity of the proposed method.
After open -ended model pipe pile, which was composed of inner tube and outer tube was driven by different installation methods, degradation in open -ended pipe pile capacity was studied during simulated horizontal seismic shaking, which was modeled by records of actual earthquake. Drgradation in ultimate capacity of open -ended pipe pile during simulated earthquake was about 20% in impact pile and was approached up to about 40% in vibratal pile. Most of degradation in ultimate pile capacity was occured in the outer shaft surface and degradations in outer skin friction, toe resistance of steel, and plugging force were about 80%, 10%, 10%, respectively. out of ultimate pile capacity. It appeared that this trend did not depend upon the different installation methods of pile.
In this study, 1/6 small-scale model tests of helical piles were conducted to evaluate their installation time and ultimate capacities. Model sand layers were constructed using sand pluviating method to produce uniform soil relative density. For installation of different helical piles varying locations (vertical center-to-center spacings of 50 mm and 150 mm) of helix plates, two different rotation speeds of 15 rpm and 30 rpm were implemented. Cone penetration equipment was installed within the hallow section of the helical pile to increase ultimate capacity of helical pile and to evaluate soil properties of plugged soils and soils below pile tip after installation of the piles. Based on the test results, the most fasted installation was possible under the condition of "rotation speed of 30 rpm and center-to-center spacing of 50 mm", and the highest ultimate capacity was mobilized under the condition of "rotation speed of 30 rpm and center-to-center spacing of 150 mm with cone penetration implementation."

The stabbing guide is often used to guide an add-on pile into an existing pile in offshore jacket installation. It provides a pile alignment for a welding tie-in in static condition as well. Even stabbing guide is an essential component in pile installation, it is not considered as a permanent offshore structure. In this regard, there is not a define design guideline proposed. In API RP 2A WSD, it briefly define the design considerations of stabbing guide. The failure of stabbing guide can cause a greate economical loss and a serious impact to the project schedule. Stabbing guide design should consider many factors considering actual work conditions for both static and dynamic situations. In the paper, a design method is proposed by appling the plate theory and it is confirmed numerically with FEM modeling. The geometry of stabbing guide is assumed as a cylinder shape with various wall thickness and effective length. The various thickness, effective length and pile size are compared for stable stabbing guide design.

Dynamic load and static load tests are performed on steel pipe piles and concrete piles at five construction sites in highway to compare the difference of load bearing mechanisms. At each site, one steel pile is instrumented with electric strain gages and dynamic tests are performed on the pile during installation. Damages of strain gages due to the installation are checked and static test is performed upon the same pile after two or seven days as well. It shows that load transfer from side friction to base resistance behaves somewhat differently according to the results of load-settlement analysis obtained from PDA and static load test. Initial elastic stage of load settlement curves of two load tests is almost similar. But after the yielding point, dynamic resistance of pile behaves more stiffer than static resistance, thus, dynamic load test result might overestimate the real pile capacity compared with static result. Analysis of gage readings shows that unit skin friction increases exponentially with depth. The skin friction is mobilized at the 1∼2m above the pile tip and contributes to the considerable side resistance. Comparison of side and base resistances between the measured value and the calculated value by Meyerhof's bearing capacity equation using SPT N value shows that the calculated base resistance is higher than the measured. Therefore, contribution of side resistance to total capacity shouldn't be ignored or underestimated. Finally, based upon the overall test results, a construction control procedure is suggested.

Static formulae based on limiting equilibrium theories often provide misleading predictions of pile bearing capacity in cohesionless soils due to the incorrect basic assumptions or oversimplification of actual soil conditions. Soil conditions prior to pile driving are significantly changed after pile installation and imposition of high stress levels. Therefore soi1 parameters at failure rather than those obtained at initial conditions should be used in application of static formulae. In this research. model pile test data were analyzed and compared with the predicted values obtained from the various static formulae. The results showed that the proper choice of soil parameters remarkably improve the reliability of static formulae.
