  • This paper reports the fluid flow and heat transfer around a module cooled by forced air flow generated by a piezoelectric(PZT) cooling fan. A flexible PZT fan with distortion in a fluid transport system of comparatively simple structure which was mounted on a PCB in a parallel-plate channel($450{\times}80{\times}700mm^3$) accelerates surrounding fluid locally. Input voltages of 20-100V and a resonance frequency of 23Hz were used to vibrate the cooling fan. Input power to the module was 4W. The cooling effect using a PZT fan was larger than that of free convection. Fluid flow around the module were visualized by using PIV system. The temperature distribution around heated module were visualized by using liquid crystal film(LCF). We found that the flow type was y-shaped and the cooling effect was increased by the wake generated by a piezoelectric cooling fan.

  • This paper is concerned on the theoretical and experimental approaches of direct piezoelectric effect in the PVDF film. When a cantilever structure of PVDF film is bended by the external force, electric charges are concentrated on the electrode surface of the film due to the direct piezoelectric effect, and output voltage is induced from the terminals of the film. In this paper, a symbolic equation between the external force and the output voltage was introduced. Moreover, the theoretical output voltages were compared with the experimental results by falling balls, which were agreed well each other. This results can be useful in a warning system of abnormal pulse rate and breathing, and in detecting impact force and/or mechanical energy using bending of PVDF film.

  • Thin-walled adaptive structures render a large and important group of adaptive structures. Typical material system used for them is a composite laminate that includes piezoelectric material based sensors and actuators. The piezoelectric active elements are in the form of thin patches bonded onto or embedded into the structure. Among different types of patches, the paper considers those polarized in the thickness direction. The finite element method (FEM) imposed itself as an essential technical support for the needs of structural design. This paper gives a brief description of a developed shell type finite element for active/adaptive thin-walled structures and the element is, furthermore, used as a tool to consider the aspect of mesh distortion over the surface of actuators and sensors. The aspect is of significance for simulation of behavior of adaptive structures and implementation of control algorithms.

  • The motion analysis of a translation device driven by a piezoelectric actuator is performed to identify the mechanics of impact drive mechanism and to find the maximum speed waveform. The translation device is modeled as a semidefinite two-degree-of-freedom system. The motion analysis includes effects of friction force between moving mass and contact surface, dynamics of voltage amplifier and piezoelectric elements, and hysteresis of piezoelectric actuator. Base on the model, simulation studies are carried out and then compared with experimental results. It is found that the error between moving distances obtained by analysis and experiment is less than 15% and that the actual motion of moving mass is well predicted by the analytical work, finally, precision positioning experiments are carried out by using a proximity sensor as a feedback sensor. Position control of moving mass is initiated by the maximum speed waveform and finely tuned by the scaled down waveform so that accurate positioning is accomplished within the resolution of the sensor.

  • In this work, transient thermo-piezo-elastic responses of an infinite functionally graded piezoelectric (FGPE) plate whose upper surface suffers time-dependent thermal shock are investigated in the context of different thermo-piezo-elastic theories. The thermal and mechanical properties of functionally graded piezoelectric plate under consideration are expressed as power functions of plate thickness variable. The solution of problem is obtained by solving the corresponding finite element governing equations in time domain directly. Transient thermo-piezo-elastic responses of the FGPE plate, including temperature, stress, displacement, electric intensity and electric potential are presented graphically and analyzed carefully to show multi-field coupling behaviors between them. In addition, the effects of functionally graded parameters on transient thermo-piezo-elastic responses are also investigated to provide a theoretical basis for the application of the FGPE materials.

  • The present study investigates the propagation of shear waves in a composite structure comprised of imperfectly bonded piezoelectric layer with a micropolar half space. Piezoelectric layer is considered to be initially stressed. Micropolar theory of elasticity has been employed which is most suitable to explain the size effects on small length scale. The general dispersion equations for the existence of waves in the coupled structure are obtained analytically in the closed form. Some particular cases have been discussed and in one particular case the dispersion relation is in well agreement to the classical-Love wave equation. The effects of various parameters viz. initial stress, interfacial imperfection and micropolarity on the phase velocity are obtained for electrically open and mechanically free system. Numerical computations are carried out and results are depicted graphically to illustrate the utility of the problem. The phase velocity of the shear waves is found to be influenced by initial stress, interface imperfection and the presence of micropolarity in the elastic half space. The theoretical results obtained are useful for the design of high performance surface acoustic devices.

  • Piezoelectricity is defined as the ability of certain materials to produce electric signals when mechanically stressed or to deform when an electrical potential is applied. Piezo technology is becoming increasingly crucial as intelligent devices use vibration sensors to detect vibrations in consumer electronics, the automotive industry, architectural design, and other applications. A wide range of applications is now possible with piezoelectric sensors, such as skin-attachable devices that monitor health and detect diseases. In this article, copper nanoparticles are used in the piezoelectric sensor as the driving agent of the magnetic field. Magnetic nanocatalysts containing copper nanoparticles are used due to their cheapness and availability. Considering that the increase of the electric field acting on the piezoelectric increases the damping (As a result, damping materials reduce radiation noise and increase material transfer losses by altering the natural vibration frequency of the vibrating surface). Among the advantages of this method are depreciating a significant amount of input energy using high energy absorption capacity and controlling slight vibrations in the sensors.

  • The axisymmetric buckling delamination of the Piezoelectric/Metal/Piezoelectric (PZT/Metal/PZT) sandwich circular plate with interface penny-shaped cracks is investigated. The case is considered where open-circuit conditions with respect to the electrical displacement on the upper and lower surfaces, and short-circuit conditions with respect to the electrical potential on the lateral surface of the face layers are satisfied. It is assumed that the edge surfaces of the cracks have an infinitesimal rotationally symmetric initial imperfection and the development of this imperfection with rotationally symmetric compressive forces acting on the lateral surface of the plate is studied by employing the exact geometrically non-linear field equations and relations of electro-elasticity for piezoelectric materials. The sought values are presented in the power series form with respect to the small parameter which characterizes the degree of the initial imperfection. The zeroth and first approximations are used for investigation of stability loss and buckling delamination problems. It is established that the equations and relations related to the first approximation coincide with the corresponding ones of the three-dimensional linearized theory of stability of electro-elasticity for piezoelectric materials. The quantities related to the zeroth approximation are determined analytically, however the quantities related to the first approximation are determined numerically by employing Finite Element Method (FEM). Numerical results on the critical radial stresses acting in the layers of the plate are presented and discussed. In particular, it is established that the piezoelectricity of the face layer material causes an increase (a decrease) in the values of the critical compressive stress acting in the face (core) layer.

  • In this study, two new types of micro-grippers in which micro-fingers are actuated by piezoelectric multi-layer benders and stacks are introduced for the manipulation of micrometer-sized objects. First, we constructed a 3-chopstick-mechanism tungsten gripper, which is composed of three chopsticks: two are designed to grip micro-objects, and tile third is used to help grasp and release the objects through overcoming especially electrostatic force among some surface effects including electrostatic, van der Waals forces and surface tension. Second, a 2-chopstick-mechanism silicon micro-gripper that uses an integrated force sensor to control the gripping force was developed. The micro-gripper is composed of a piezoelectric multilayer bender for actuating the gripper fingers, silicon fingertips fabricated by use of silicon-based micromachining, and supplementary supports. The micro-gripper is referred to as a hybrid-type micro-gripper because it is composed of two main components; micro-fingertips fabricated using micromachining technology to integrate a very sensitive force sensor for measuring the gripping force, and piezoelectric gripper finger actuators that are capable of large gripping forces and moving strokes. The gripping force signal was found to have a sensitivity of 667 N/V. To the design of each of components of both of the grippers. a systematic design approach was applied, which made it possible to establish the functional requirements and design parameters of the micro-grippers. The micro-grippers were installed on a manual manipulator to assess its performance in tasks such as moving micro-objects from one position to a desired position. The experiment showed that the micro-grippers function effectively.
