  • The present paper deals with the application of one dimensional piezoelectric materials in particular piezo-thermoelastic nanobeam. The generalized piezo-thermo-elastic theory with two temperature and Euler Bernoulli theory with small scale effects using nonlocal Eringen's theory have been used to form the mathematical model. The ends of nanobeam are considered to be simply supported and at a constant temperature. The mathematical model so formed is solved to obtain the non-dimensional expressions for lateral deflection, electric potential, thermal moment, thermoelastic damping and frequency shift. Effect of frequency and nonlocal parameter on the lateral deflection, electric potential, thermal moment with generalized piezothermoelastic theory are represented graphically using the MATLAB software. Comparisons are made with the different theories of thermoelasticity.

  • Generally the piezo-composites have superior hydrostatic response characteristics than PZT ceramics due to both the stress amplification effect in axial direction and stress reduction effects in radial direction. This paper described material properties of a 1-3 type piezo-composite that fabricated with ceramic injection molding (CIM) technology. The electro-mechanical performances of the composite have been analyzed using FEM and the physical properties of the composite have been measured with the vol. % of the PZT ceramics. Based on the results, the $k_t$ increased rapidly as the vol. % of the PZT ceramics increased up to 30 vol. % and saturated the constant value in the above region. Also the experimental results have good agreement with the simulation values of the composite. Finally we developed the composites having high piezoelectric properties than the PZT ceramics with the CIM technology.

  • Ultrasonic transducer is the sensor which is measuring distance. Piezo ceramic of ultrasonic sensor and adhesive technique of matching layer are the most core techniques. With the study of relation on matching layer which takes off the ultrasonic wave into the air, this paper aims to find the second useful frequency as the results which can be changed are extracted in case piezo ceramic and matching layer are bonded. And the experiment is done with piezo ceramic as real piezoelectric element and matching layer of chemical wood. OD of piezo ceramic has designed by ${\Phi}50{\times}3T$ and OD of matching layer is designed by ${\Phi}62{\times}12t$ with ${\lambda}=1/4$. Acoustic impedance is generated at the most optimum resonant frequency of 53 Khz. As experimental result, more available frequency can be generated by using the adhesive close to solid than the flexible one.

  • A wireless capsule endoscope has been developed to replace the conventional endoscope. However, the commercialized capsule endoscope moves passively by peristaltic waves, which has some limitations for doctors to diagnose more thoroughly and actively. In order to solve this problem, a locomotive mechanism is proposed for wireless capsule endoscopes. Based on the tests of various actuators, a piezo actuator is selected as a micro actuator for capsule endoscope. In general, piezo actuators are known to have limited displacement with high voltage supply. In order to overcome the limitation of common piezo actuator, the impact based piezo actuator, is developed to realize long stroke up 11mm. By using the impact based piezo actuator, a prototype of an earthworm-like locomotive mechanism was developed. In addition, the proposed locomotive mechanism has engraved clamps mimicked the claw of an insect. The earthworm-like locomotive mechanism has 15 mm in diameter and 30mm under retraction stage and 41 mm under elongation stage in total length. Hollow space is allocated to comprise essential endoscope components such as a camera, a communication module, bio sensors, and a battery. For the feasibility test of proposed locomotive mechanism, a series of experiments were carried out including in-vitro tests. Based on results of the experiments, we conclude that the proposed locomotive mechanism is effective to be used for micro capsule endoscopes.

  • A nonlinear ultrasonic parameter is defined by the ratio of displacement amplitude of the fundamental frequency component to that of the second-order harmonic frequency component. In this study, the ultrasonic displacement amplitude of an SUS316 specimen was measured via a piezo-electric-based method to identify the validity of piezo-electric detection method. For comparison, the ultrasonic displacement was also determined via a laser-based Fabry-Pérot interferometer. The experimental results for both measurements were in good agreement. Additionally, the stability of the repeated test results from the piezo-electric method exceeded that of the laser-interferometric method. This result indicated that the piezo-electric detection method can be utilized to measure a nonlinear ultrasonic parameter due to its excellent stability although it involves a complicated process.

  • Space applications of the motion have been served with DC motors for decades. But their functionality with a gearbox and lubricants and their weights are always an issue for its application. A piezo-motor has an advantage on the direct driving with higher accuracy, smaller size, and no-EMI. We use the piezo-motor to rotate a filter wheel directly in a balloon-borne coronagraph launched on September 2019. The piezo-motor works well in a temperature range from -10 to 40 Celsius with high reliability and high positioning / tilt accuracy (~0.1degree) with a photo-encoder. We verify its functionality for 7 days. In this talk, we report the design, test processes of the filter wheel including its balloon flight result.

  • In multi-stage cold forging process, to enhance the productivity and product quality, in-site process monitoring technique by implanting sensors such as piezo-sensor and acoustic emission sensor has been continuously studied. For accurate analysis of the process, the selection of appropriate sensors and implantation positions are very important. Until now, in a multi-state forging machine, wedge parts located at the end of punch-set are used but it is difficult to analyze minute changes in die block-set. In this study, we also implanted sensors to the die part (die spacer) and compared signals from both sensors and found that sensing signals from die part showed enhanced process monitoring results.

  • This study was performed to figure out spray behavior and fuel atomization characteristics of a piezo-driven injector and a solenoid-driven injector in the common-rail injection system under the same design parameters and test conditions. The process of spray injection was visualized by using the spray visualization system composed of a Nd:YAG laser and an ICCD camera. The atomization characteristics were investigated in terms of axial mean velocity, Sauter mean diameter(SMD) and droplet distributions obtained from a phase Doppler particle analyzer system. Compared with solenoid-driven injector, the piezo-driven injector has short injection delay and reaches quickly to the maximum injection value. Spray tip penetration shows some difference, however, spray angle of piezo-driven injector is wider than that of solenoid-driven injector. Sauter mean diameter of piezo-driven type injector is smaller than that of solenoid-driven type.

  • Piezo devices such as piezoceramic patches knwon as collocated rate sensor and actuators are commonly used in control of flexible structure (see, e.g., [1]) and noise reduction. Recently, Ito and Kang ([4]) developed a nonlinear feedback control synthesis for regulating fluid flow using these devices.

  • By employing a quasi-3D plate formulation, the present research studies static stability of magneto-electro-thermo-elastic functional grading (METE-FG) nano-sized plates. Accordingly, influences of shear deformations as well as thickness stretching have been incorporated. The gradation of piezo-magnetic and elastic properties of the nano-sized plate have been described based on power-law functions. The size-dependent formulation for the nano-sized plate is provided in the context of nonlocal elasticity theory. The governing equations are established with the usage of Hamilton's rule and then analytically solved for diverse magnetic-electric intensities. Obtained findings demonstrate that buckling behavior of considered nanoplate relies on the variation of material exponent, electro-magnetic field, nonlocal coefficient and boundary conditions.
