  • In previous communications$^{1-6)}$, the results of the preliminary phytochemical examinatioins of 261 plant samples which have been used in medicine in Korea were reported. In continuation of this program we now present in Table I the results of chemical examination of another 92 species, belonging to 80 genera nad 48 families, which were screened for the presence of alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids, and flavonoids. The list of folk medicines described by Lee$^{7)}$ was used as a guide in the selection of plants to be tested.

  • The total phenolic and flavonoid contents of Lentinus edodes extracts were determinated by spectrophotometrical .method, and antihepatotoxic activity was detected on glutathione S-Transferases(GST). The total phenolic contents was highest water extract than solvent(ethanol, methanol) extracts, but flavonoid content was appear on opposite. GST activity was the highest appears in water extract. This fact verified of anticancer effect indirectly of Lentinus edodes.

  • From the Viticis Fructus n-hydrocarbons, ${\beta}-sitosterol$ $3-O-{\beta}-_D-glucoside$ and hesperidin along with the known polyoxygenated flavonoids such as vitexicarpin, artemetin and luteolin, and vanillic acid were isolated and identified by means of spectroscopic methods. HPLC analysis of the flavonoid components from the MeOH extract was established. Phytochemical analyses of the domestic plant sample and the imported ones were conducted and the flavonoid compositions of the domestic samples were greatly different from those of the imported ones.

  • Phytochemical investigation of the MeOH extract of the aerial parts of Geranium eriostemon resulted in the isolation of one triterpene, three furofuran lignans, one syringic acid and four flavonoids. Their chemical structures were characterized by spectroscopic methods to be oleanolic acid (1), (-)-kobusin (2), (-)-eudesmin (3), (+)-magnolin (4), syringic acid (5), quercetin (6), juglanin (7), juglalin (8), and hyperin (9). All compounds (1 - 9) were isolated for the first time from this plant source and the compounds 2 - 4 were reported first from the genus Geranium. Compounds 4 - 6 exhibited moderate cytotoxicity against four human cancer cell lines in vitro using a SRB bioassay.

  • Phytochemical constituents were isolated from the seeds of Lithospermum erythrorhizon through open column chromatography and prep-HPLC. Their structures were identified as ${\beta}$-sitosterol (1), daucosterol (2), luteolin (3), and allantoin (4) on the basis of spectroscopic analysis. Among them, luteolin (3) was isolated for the first time from the plant.

  • A crude drug "Dang-Gui", belonging to the genus Angelica, has been used as a traditional herbal medicine in Asia. Various studies have investigated the chemical components and pharmacological activities of Dang-Gui worldwide. However, domestic research results published in Korean are undervalued in international academia due to language barriers. Therefore, it is necessary to summarize the domestic research findings systematically for greater accessibility. This review focuses on the results published in four Korean pharmaceutical journals between 1970 and 2018, which detail the botanical, phytochemical, and pharmacological properties of three Angelica species (A. gigas, A. sinensis, and A. acutiloba) used as "Dang-Gui" in Korea, China, and Japan.
