  • Coenzyme Q10(CoQ10) is a biological quinine compound that is widely found in living organisms including yeast, plants, and animals. CoQ10 has two major physiological activities:(a)mitochondrial electron-transport activity and (b )antioxidant activity. Various clinical applications are also available: Parkinson's disease, Heart disease, diabetes. Because of its various application filed, the market size of CoQ10 is continuously expanding all over the world. A Japanese company, Nisshin Pharma Inc. is the first industrial producer of CoQ10(1974). CoQ10 can be produced by fermentation and chemical synthesis. In several companies, these two methods are used for the production of CoQ10:chemical synthesis - Yungjin, Daewoong, Nishin Parma; fermentation - Kaneka, Kyowa, Yungjin, etc. Researchs in microbial production of CoQ10 have several steps: screening of producing microorganisms, strain development, fermentation process, purification process, scale-up process, plant production. Several strategies are available for the strain development : Random mutation and screening, directed metabolic engineering. For the optimization of fermentation process, various conditions (nutrient, aeration, temperature, culture type, etc.) are considered. Purification is one of the most important step because the quality of final products entirely depends on its purity. The production cost will be reduced and the quality of the CoQ10 will be impoved by continuous researches in strain development, fermentation process, purification process.

  • Changes in physiological functionality of giant embryonic rice by germination process were investigated using 70% ethanolic extract of the rices. Physiological functionality was evaluated by determining the reducing power, phenolic compound content, GABA content, and antimutagenicity. The results showed that the order of reducing power of the non-germinated rices was Nampung giant embryonic rice>normal rice> Whachung giant embryonic rice, however, the activity was high as the order of Whachung giant embryonic rice> Nampung giant embryonic rice> normal rice by germination process. About 3-fold activity increase was observed for Whachung giant embryonic rice, while, the activity of Nampung giant embryonic rice and normal rice decreased by the same treatment. The phenolic compound content of three rice cultivars were found to be almost same levels. Germination of rice increased the content of phenolic compounds by 2.6-fo1d without any considerable changes for both Nampung giant embryonic rice and normal rice. The GABA contents was highest in Whachung giant embryonic rice, followed by Nampung giant embryonic rice, normal rice in either germination or non-germination condition. The germination increased the GABA contents by more than 2.4-fold for all rice cultivars tested. We also found an increase in the antimutagenic activity by germination process for all cultivars, where the activity was the greatest for Whachung cultivar.

  • There has been accumulating evidence for the association of inflammatory tissue damage with the process of cancer development. Cyclooxygenase (COX), an important enzyme involved in mediating the inflammation, catalyzes the formation of prostaglandins (PGs) from arachidonic acid. There are two isoforms of COX, designated as COX-l and COX-2. COX-l is a housekeeping enzyme which is constitutively expressed and is thought to be involved in maintaining physiological functions.(omitted)

  • In crustacea the molting cycle is the most important physiological process affecting growth, behaviour, reproduction and population dynamics through their life span. Particularly molt cycle is closely related to reproductive cycle, and it is important to determine the successive stages of molt cycle to understand reproductive phenomena including ovarian cycle and the development of the embryos in the marsupium. • Cells are eliminated in a variety of physiological settings by apoptosis, a genetically encoded process of cellular suicide. Bak, a member of the Bcl-2 protein family, accelerates apoptosis by an unknown mechanism. We have found a novel cDNA encoding a 101 amino acid protein possessing a Bak-like in our full-length cDNA bank. Bak-like shares the conserved domains BHI and 2 with other proapoptotic proteins but lacks the BH3 domain. Bak-like is expressed in a wide variety of tissues. Like Bak, Bak-like gene product primarily enhances apoptotic cell death following an appropriate stimulus.

  • Manual lifting, as a part of Manual Materials Handling Activities, is recognized by authorities in the field of occupational health and safety as a major hazard to industrial workers. The most important problem in applying fuzzy model of manual materials lifting is the decision of membership functions on each approaches. : Biomechanical, Physiological, Psychophysical. The primary objectives of this paper suggests to process deciding the most acceptable membership functions for establishing permissible weights on manual lifting activities using fuzzy sets.

  • Estrogen is the most important endocrine hormone that has reproduction and physiological process in a number of tissues. However, an excess of estrogen can promotes the growth of hormone-dependent breast cancer. Thus the regulation of estrogen level is important a prevention of estrogen-related cancer. It has been reported that some of flavonoids could inhibit estrogen-dependent cancer. And these compounds are expected as chemopreventive agents on estrogen related disease. (omitted)

  • Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) play many important physiological roles on cellular process through the regulations of intracellular signaling. Recent clinical studies suggest that PUFAs such as n-3 fatty acids (docosahexaenoic acid, 22:6 and a-lnolenic acid, 18:3) may reduce the risk of incident Alzheimer's disease (AD). And also the reports regarding the decrease of n-3 fatty acids in AD brain support the correlation between PUFAs and AD. AD is a neurodegenerative disorder with pathological hallmarks of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. (omitted)

  • To study on the assignment of the eight trigrams (八卦) for the process on intake, digestion, excretion of food. Being based BEOK-HEE's diagram of eight trigrams order(伏羲次序圖), provisional namely six entera are assigned eight trigrams(八卦). Eight trigrams(八卦) are attached to the air(GEON 乾), the month(TAE 兌), the stomach(LEE 離), the small intestine(JIN 震),the large intestine(SON 巽), the rectum(GAM 坎), the anus(GAN 艮), the excrements(GON 坤). The BEOK-HEE's diagram of eight trigrams order(伏羲次序圖) means immutable order naturally. The process of six entera's digestion is also unchangeable in region and program. Therefore we can set up the process of six entera's digestion as the category of observation on the basis of BEOK-HEE's diagram of eight trigrams order(伏羲次序圖), and then we can arrange eight trigrams(八卦) on the process of six entera's digestion.
