The article demonstrates a method of studying human health and nutrition by applying a multi-disciplinary approach and examines how humans developed and survived by adjusting to their environment. This process involves physiological, cultural and genetic adaptation both independently and interactively. This study postulates that a sound human health may be the result of balance between nutrition and environmental conditions. It is noted that there is a positive correlation between malaria and fava bean intake, and sickle cell anemia and cassava intake. It is also suggested that the difference in disease structure in soybean and non-soybean consumption cultures can be explained by an ecological approach to studying nutrition. This study further suggest that the relationship between nutrition and socio-cultural system. epidmiological study of nutrition and cultural environment nutrition and conceptual characteristics, nutrition and food intake pattern, nutrition and health sociological functions and the physioloical, cultural and genetic adaptation can all be stimulating research subjects to be studied form and ecological point of view. This article also includes the results from a series of ecological studies conducted by the author investigating the relationship between nutritional status of Korean breast-feeding mothers and the composition of the human milk and also the Vitamin D status of Korean and their lifestyle. The purpose of this study was to examine the performance and properties of sports wear that have the excellent wearing sensation and are in harmony with the functions of human bodies. With four kind(sample A, B, C, D) of materials which have different water vapor transmission, the physiological responses of human bodies and the changes of subjective sensations were studied through the actual aerobic sports program at $20^{\circ}C$, 60%R.H. The forehead temperature had the minimal variation among the local skin temperatures. The fabrics of low water vapor transmission demonstrated high breast temperature. There are significant differences among materials depending on the humidity in clothes(especially back and breast), which was about 6 % for breast and about 14 % for back. The order of loss in body weight was in the opposite direction to that of water vapor transmission for each material.
Methylotrophic actinomycetes No. 155 produced an aminoglycoside antibiotics(AG)-resistant inhibitor. We have previously reported that the inhibitor shows strong inhibition to sisomicin-resistant strain. In order to understand the functions of inhibitor and sisomicin-resistance, characterizations and purification of inhibitor were investigated. Strain No. 155 was tentatively identified as Nocardiopsis sp. based on morphological and some physiological characteristics. In the antimicrobial activity test, the addition of inhibitor to sisomicin showed a reduction effect of MIC on the test strains such as Gram(+), Gram(-) bacteria and yeasts. The combination of the inhibitor and various antibiotics revealed synergistic against E. coli K-12 and B. subtilis PCI 219. The induced intracellular proteins from sisomicin-resistant strain exhibited the sisomicin inactivation by invitro test. And the induced intracellular proteins were inactivated by addition of the inhibitor. The inhibitor compound was purified by anion exchange chromatography(Dowex-1) and HPLC using Asahipak ES-502C column. The purified inhibitor compound was detected in a single peak(above 98.5% purity) through the HPLC analysis.
In addition to the nutritional values, milk has a wide range of bioactive compounds which have been found to be increasingly important for physiological and biochemical functions on human metabolism and health. Bioactive components in milk comprise specific proteins, peptides, lipids and carbohydrates. Especially, milk proteins are known to exert a wide range of nutritional, functional, and biological activities. And milk proteins are considered the most important source of bioactive peptides, including antihypertensive, antithrombotic, antimicrobial, antioxidative, immunomodulatory, and opioid peptides. Many ingredients containing specific bioactive peptides derived from milk protein hydrolysates have been launched on the market and are currently under development. In future studies more emphasis should be given to the health-promoting effect in the well-defined human clinical studies for the successful development of function foods based on the milk-derived bioactive components.
Many bacteria monitor their population density and control the expression of specialized gene sets in response to bacterial cell density based on a mechanism referred to as quorum sensing. In all cases, quorum sensing involves the production and detection of extracellular signaling molecules, auto inducers, as which Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria use most prevalently acylated homoserine lactones and processed oligo-peptides, respectively. Through quorum-sensing communication circuits, bacteria regulate a diverse array of physiological functions, including virulence, symbiosis, competence, conjugation, antibiotic production, motility, sporulation, and biofilm formation. Many pathogens have evolved quorum-sensing mechanisms to mount population-density-dependent attacks to over-whelm the defense responses of plants, animals, and humans. Since these AHL-mediated signaling mechanisms are widespread and highly conserved in many pathogenic bacteria, the disruption of quorum-sensing system might be an attractive target for novel anti-infective therapy. To control AHL-mediated pathogenicity, several promising strategies to disrupt bacterial quorum sensing have been reported, and several chemicals and enzymes have been also investigated for years. These studies indicate that anti-quorum sensing strategies could be developed as possible alternatives of antibiotics.
Polyphosphate (polyP) plays diverse physiological functions in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, but most of their detailed mechanisms are still obscure. Here, we show that deletion of polyphosphate kinase (PPK), the principal enzyme responsible for synthesis of polyP, resulted in augmented expression of cAMP receptor protein (CRP) and rpoS and lowered $H_2O_2$ sensitivity in Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC14028. The binding of cAMP-CRP complex to rpoS promoter and further stimulation of its transcription were proved through electrophoretic mobility shift assay, lacZ fusion, and exogenous cAMP addition, respectively. The rpoS expression increased in cpdA (cAMP phosphodiesterase coding gene) mutant, further suggesting that cAMP-CRP upregulated rpoS expression. These results demonstrate that PPK affects oxidative stress response by modulating crp and rpoS expression in S. Typhimurium.
Objective : The brain is dependent on glucose as an energy source. Intricate homeostatic mechanisms have been implicated in maintaining the blood glucose concentration in the brain. The aim of this study is to find the way to identify the metabolic proteins regulating the glucose in rat hypothalamus. Methods : In this study, we analysed the secretome from rat hypothalamus in vivo. We introduced 500 nM of insulin into the rat hypothalamus. The chromatographic patterns of the secretome were identified, after which Mass Spectrometry-Mass Spectrometry (MS-MS) analysis was performed. Results : In Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis, 60 proteins were identified in the secretome. Among them, 8 novel proteins were unveiled and were associated with the energy metabolism of insulin signaling in mitochondria of rat hypothalamic neuron. Nineteen other proteins have unknown functions. These ligands were confirmed to be secreting from the rat hypothalmus on insulin signaling by western blotting. Conclusion : The hypothalamus is the master endocrine gland responsible for the regulation of various physiological and metabolic processes. Proteomics using LC-MS analysis offer a efficient means for generating a comprehensive analysis of hypothalamic protein expression by insulin signaling.
This review contains a discussion of the physiological activity of the components of Allium vegetables. Organosulfur compounds in Allium vegetables, such as ajoene, diallyl sulfides and S allylcysteine, have cancer preventive activity in chemically induced animal cancer models. They also have inhibitory effects on proliferation of cancer cells in vitro. Allium vegetables have lipid and cholesterol lowering effect, and platelet aggregation inhibitory activity that help the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Sulfur con taining compounds, especially allicin and ajoene, have antimicrobial activities against gram negative, positive bacteria and fungi. Moreover, Allium organosulfur compounds such as S allylcysteine showed reducing effects on the senescence related symptoms including cognition. Allium organosulfur compounds have significant importance in food industry as both biologically active ingredients and savory.
Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) such as acetate, propionate, and butyrate are secondary metabolites produced by anaerobic fermentation of dietary fibers in the intestine. Intestinal SCFAs exert various beneficial effects on intestinal homeostasis, including energy metabolism, autophagy, cell proliferation, immune reaction, and inflammation, whereas contradictory roles of SCFAs in the oral cavity have been reported. Herein, we found that low and high concentrations of SCFAs induce differential regulation of intracellular Ca2+ mobilization and expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8, respectively, in gingival fibroblast cells. Additionally, cell viability was found to be differentially regulated in response to low and high concentrations of SCFAs. These findings demonstrate that the physiological functions of SCFAs in various cellular responses are more likely dependent on their local concentration.

Non-invasive and non-restrictive methods for measuring the physiological functions of the human body are useful for health care, security, and surveillance. In this paper, a new method that extracts human heartbeat information by utilizing ultra-wideband (UWB) impulse radar is proposed. The amplitude spectra of received radar pulses reflected from the human body are accumulated at specific time intervals, and chirp z-transform (CZT) is used to extract the heartbeat frequency from the amplitude spectra. The heartbeat frequency can be extracted with high-frequency resolution in the frequency band of the heartbeat of interest using CZT. Experimental results to verify the performance of the proposed method show that a highly accurate extraction of the heartbeat frequency is possible using this method.
