  • Hwang Chil (Dendropanax morbifera Lev.) belongs to Aralia elata group. This plant is only found in Korea and is considered to be along with ginseng. The physiological activities of it have been reported as having scavenging effect on oxygen free radicals and anti-carcinogenic effect. As most of the anti-oxidants were effective on protecting hepatotoxicity from alcohol, hard tissues restoring and skin whitening, the effectiveness of Hwang Chil extracts was screened. (omitted)

  • The important biological activities of estrogen were reproduction and physiological processes in a number of tissues, including liver, bone, brain, blood vessels, adipose tissue and so on. The regulation of estrogen level is important a prevention of estrogen-related disease. Ginkgo biloba extracts (GSE) are extracted from leaves of the Ginkgo biloba tree. GSE contains 24% phytoestrogen, which are kaempferol, quercetin, and isorhamnetin. (omitted)

  • The use of synthetic pesticides in crop production, brings the possibility of a nonselective toxicity and accumulation of toxic compounds in the environment. As an alternative, bioactive compounds from actinomycetes can provide a rich source for biodegradable pesticides. A variety of biological activities such as antibacterial, antifungal, herbicidal, insecticidal and anticoccidial are associated with these microbial metabolites. Studies on the production of bioactive compounds from marine-derived actinomycetes have been very few, compared to the terrestrial actinomycetes. With their unique metabolic and physiological capabilities, the marine actinomycetes can be useful producers of novel metabolites.

(1,2). • The changes in components and biological activities of doenjang samples prepared with black soybeans and fermented with Bacillus subtilis SCB were investigated. The amino nitrogen (A-N) contents of samples increased with increasing black soybean content. A doenjang product made using a 1:1 ratio of soybeans-black soybeans showed a maximum level of genistein and daidzein isoflavones ($1111.6{\mu}g/g$) at 110 days of fermentation, along with decreasing contents of genistin and daidzin due to the conversion to aglycones. The black soybean-only doenjang sample showed higher protease activity, including caseinolytic and fibrinolytic enzyme activities, than the other samples, and had relatively higher polyphenol content and DPPH radical scavenging activity. Therefore, doenjang made with additions of black soybeans and fermented by B. subtilis SCB may have improved physiological properties, suggesting this to be a valuable method of preparation.

  • Cytotoxic and antifungal activities were strongly shown by Fr. 4 (218 mg, P388 IC/sub 50/ 652 ng/ml at 75 μg/disc, IC50 834 ng/ml at 30 μg/disc and HM 8). The subfraction 4 - 3 that showed the most activity was cytotoxic to murine leukaemia cells ATCC CCl 46 P388D1, (44.0 mg, P388 IC50 302 ng/ml at 30 μg/disc).

  • Effects of Hwangryeun(Copitidis rhizoma) extract on recovery of liver function were researched in $CCl_4$ intoxicated rats. Concentration ${\alpha}$-fetoprotein, total protein in plasma showed a tendency to decrease in Hwangryeun(Copitidis rhizoma) extract applied groups while that of albumin showed a increase. Activities of plasma aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase in Hwangryeun(Copitidis rhizoma) extract applied groups showed a lower value than those of controlled groups. Alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase and ${\gamma}$-glutamyl transpeptidase activities showed a tendency to decrease in Hwangryeun(Copitidis rhizoma) extract applied groups. Concentration of plasma triglyceride and total cholesterol showed a lower values than that of control group.

  • We studied changes in the biochemical and physiological status and ROS-scavenging enzyme (superoxide dismutase, catalase and peroxidase) activity in leaves and roots of rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants exposed to high salinity. Under salt stress, the reduction in RWC (relative water content) in leaves was relatively severe in comparison with that of roots. The proline content was also significantly higher in leaves of rice plants following salt treatment. The activities of CAT and POX in roots increased with increasing NaCl concentration, but the activity of SOD decreased. These results suggest that the increase of endogenous proline is closely associated with the increase of CAT and POX activities, which may play important roles in salt tolerance. Therefore, we conclude that the alleviation of oxidative damage and increased resistance to salinity may result from the presence of efficient antioxidative systems.

  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa produces a variety of bacteriocidal substances including pyocins that are active against the same species, but their physiological roles are relatively unknown. Here, we profiled the bacteriocidal activities in the culture supernatants of various P. aeruginosa isolates and describe the competitive growth advantages of strains PAO1 and PA14 over some strains including PAK, which are sensitive to their bacteriocidal activities. These findings suggest that the factors governing the production of pyocins and the resistance to them play important roles in controlling P. aeruginosa populations in its local environments.
