Increasing the Pig Market Weight: World Trends, Expected Consequences and Practical Considerations

  • The present report has been aimed at reviewing important factors which need to be closely analyzed or considered when increasing the market weight of finishing pigs. The pig market weight has increased worldwide during the past few decades, which is attributable primarily to an increased lean gain potential of finishing pigs. To increase the market weight, however, the acceptability of larger pigs by the packer as well as pork consumers should be met first. By increasing the market weight, total number of breeding stock, as well as the facility for them, necessary for producing a given weight of pork can be reduced, whereas more building space for finishing pigs and an additional nutrition program for the later finishing period are needed. Additionally, a more thorough disease prevention program especially against ileitis and mycoplasma pneumonia may also be needed, because outbreaks of these are known to increase with increasing body weight over 110 kg. Some larger finishing pigs may deposit excessive fat that may be reduced or prevented by using hormonal and/or nutritional agents. Backfat thickness increases linearly with increasing body weight between 110 and 130 kg, whereas intramuscular fat content does not change significantly. With increasing live weight within this range, the ratios of belly and loin to carcass weight also are known to increase. Some physicochemical characteristics related to fresh and cooked meat quality including color, firmness, juiciness, etc. are known to be unaffected or slightly changed following an increase of slaughter weight. In conclusion, ratios of primal cuts and pork quality characteristics are not significantly affected by increasing the market weight. Moreover, increasing the market weight of lean-type pigs approximately up to 130 kg is normally profitable to producers, as long as packers and consumers accept larger pigs.

대청호의 수질과 식물플랑크톤 현존량 (Water Quality and Phytoplankton Standing Crops in the Daechung Reservoir)

  • 본 연구는 1998년 5월부터 11월까지 대청호의 2개 정점 표ㆍ중ㆍ저층에서 수질과 일차생산을 나타내는 식물플랑크톤 현존량과의 관계를 규명하기 위하여 물리ㆍ화학적 환경요인(수온, 용존산소량, pH, 투명도, 총질소, 질산염, 아질산염, 암모니아, 총인, 인산염, 용존총인, 총유기탄소, 부유물질), 식물플랑크톤 현존량, chlorophyll-a의 농도를 조사하였다. 영양염류(아질산염, 질산염, 암모니아 및 인산염)가 과거에 비하여 증가되었으며, 총질소, 총인,chlorophyll-a 및 투명도는 부영양화의 기준치를 초과하여 대청호의 수질은 심한 부영양화 수역으로 판명되었다. 식물플랑크톤 현존량은 7월과 8월의 정점 1을 제외하고 년중 대발생을 유지하고 있었으며, 봄철 대발생은 아질산염, 질산염 및 인산염의 영향이 큰 것으로 판명되었다. Chlorophyll-a의 농도는 식물플랑크톤 현존량의 월별 변동과 대부분 같은 경향으로 변화하였다. 여름철에 높은 부유물질은 장마기의 강우에 따른 것으로 판단되며, 특히 8월의 많은 종속영양 세균수는 높은 수온과 장마시 주변 수역으로부터 유입된 각종 유기영양염류의 유입에 따른 대량증식으로 추정된다.

Seasonal Dynamics of Phytoplankton and Environmental Factors around the Chagwi-do off the West Coast of Jeju Island, Korea

  • The dynamics of phytoplankton abundance with seasonal variation in physicochemical conditions were investigated monthly at 10 stations around the Chagwi-do off the west coast of Jeju Island, Korea, including inshore, middle shore, and offshore in the marine ranching are a from September 2004 to November 2005. Water temperature varied from 12.1 to $28.9^{\circ}C$ (average $18.8^{\circ}C$), and salinity from 28.9 to 34.9 psu (average 33.7 psu). The chlorophyll a concentration was $0.02-2.05\;{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ (average $0.70\;{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$), and the maximum concentration occurred in the bottom layer in April. A total of 294 phytoplankton species belonging to 10 families was identified: 182 Bacillariophyceae, 52 Dinophyceae, 9 Chlorophyceae, 12 Cryptophyceae, 6 Chrysophyceae, 4 Dictyophyceae, 13 Euglenophyceae, 6 Prymnesiophyceae, 5 Prasinophyceae, and 5 Raphidophyceae. The standing crop was $2.21-48.69\times10^4\;cells\;L^{-1}$ (average $9.23\times10^4\;cells\;L^{-1}$), and the maximum occurred in the bottom layer in April. Diatoms were most abundant throughout the year, followed by dinoflagellates and phytoflagellates. A phytoplankton bloom occurred twice: once in spring, peaking in April, and once in autumn, peaking in November. The spring bloom was represented by four Chaetoceros species and Skeletonema costatum; each contributed 10-20% of the total phytoplankton abundance. The autumn bloom comprised dinoflagellates, diatoms, and phytoflagellates, of which dinoflagellates were predominant. Gymnodinium conicum, Prorocentrum micans, and P. triestinum each contributed over 10% of the total phytoplankton abundance.

  • 한강 중하류의 남조류 및 환경요인의 연간변화 (2000 ${\sim}$ 2003)를 파악하기 위하여, 2000년 4월부터 2003년 10월까지 4년간 성수대교에서 성산대교까지 총 5개 지점을 선정하여, 수계의 기초환경요인 및 식물플랑크톤 현존량 변화를 조사하였다. 조사기간 동안, 남조류의 현존량은 점차적으로 감소하여 장기간 강우가 가장 많았던 2003년에는 거의 관찰되지 않았으며, 총 식물플랑크톤 현존량에 대한 남조류의 기여도는 약 10%범위내였다. 이러한 현상은 매년 강우집중기 동안 팔당댐으로부터 많은 방류수가 유입됨으로서 수온감소는 물론 광량감소, 영양염류 희석 등에 의한 남조류의 성장이 제한된 것으로판단되며, 동일시기에 다른 조류 (녹조, 규조 등)의 높은 성장으로 엽록소 a와 식물플랑크톤 현존량이 뚜렷하게 증가하였다. 따라서 한강 하류의 고온기 동안 남조류 성장은 잦은 강우와 방류에 의해 제한을 받지만 규조나 녹조와 같은 다른 조류들의 높은 성장으로 대치되는 천이현상을 보였으며, 기후영향을 크게 받는 전형적인 하천생태계의 특성을 나타냈다.

  • 국내외산 녹차 15종에 대한 이화학적 특성과 기호도를 조사하고 이들 사이의 상관관계를 구명하여 녹차의 품질영향인자를 검토하였다. 녹차의 이화학적 특성치중 탄닌, 카페인, 유리아미노함량산은 국산녹차가 외국산 녹차보다 높은 경향이었으나 클로로필함량은 일본산 녹차가 가장 높았다. 침출액의 색깔에 대한 기호도는 일본산 녹차가 가장 우수하였고 맛에 대한 기호도는 국산 볶은차가 가장 우수하였다. 이화학적 분석치와 관능평점과의 관계를 중회귀분석한 결과, 녹차의 종합적 품질에 영향을 미치는 인자는 녹차중의 카페인, 클로로필 b, 총유리아미노산함량 및 침출액의 L값 이었으며 이들 특성치에 의하여 산출한 회귀방정식은 녹차의 기호도를 89%의 신뢰도를 가지고 설명할 수 있었다.

일부 농약의 생물농축계수의 측정 (Determination of Bioconcentration Factor in Some Pesticides)

  • The present study was performed to investigate the bioconcentration of BPMC, chlorothalonil, dichlorvos and methidathion. The BCFs(bioconcentration factors) and depuration rate constants for four pesticides in zebrafish(brachydanio rerio) were measured under semi-static conditions(OECD guideline 305-B) in a concentration of one-hundredth of the 96 hours LC50 of each pesticide at the equilibrium condition. The results obtained are summarized as follows : The BCFs of BPMC, chlorothalonil, dichlorvos and methidathion were 1.44$\pm$0.09, 2.223$\pm$0.063, 0.81$\pm$0.08 and 5.53$\pm$0.13, respectively. Depuration rate constants of BPMC, chlorothalonil, dichlorvos and methidathion were 0.028, 0.015, 0.220 and 0.152, respectively. The concentrations of BPMC, dichlorovs and methidathion in zebrafish reached an equilibrium in 3 days, and the equilibrium of chlorothalonil was reached after 14 days. Depuration rate of dichlorvos was the fastest followed by methidathion, BPMC and chlorothalonil. The lower BCF of BPMC was due to its relatively high KOW, slow KDEP, and low SW and VP, compared to chlorothalonil and methidathion. The BCF of chlorothalonil was much lower than that excepted on the basis of high KOW, slow KDEP, SW and VP. The reason is that the experimental concentration for chlorothalonil is 1/100~1/1000 lower than that of BPMC, dichlorvos and methidathion. The BCF of dichlorvos was lower than that of other pesticides due to its very rapid KDEP, very high VP and SW, and very low KOW. The BCF of methidathion was higher than that of other pesticides due to its very low VP and SW. Therefore, these data suggest that physicochemical properties of pesticides may be important in the bioconcentration.

Cyanobacteria의 분해에 따른 Microcystins의 변화 (Degradation of Microcystins during the Decomposition Process of Cyanobacterial Cells)

  • 본 연구에서는 남조류의 독성물질 배출 및 분해양상을 밝히고자 대청댐 지류인 옥천천의 스컴을 채취, 실험대상으로 하였다. Light와 dark 상태로 분리${\cdot}$배양한 배지에는 조사를 하는 동안 다른 영양염류는 첨가하지 않았다. 그 결과 세포내에서 microcystins의 총량은 세포수가 감소함에 따라 감소하였으며 Microcystis aeruginosa의 현존량과 비교하였을 때 light와 dark 상태의 경우 $r^{2}$값이 각각 0.96과 0.97로 높은 상관관계를 보였고 dark 상태에서 보다 더 빠른 감소추세를 보였다. 또한 세포에서 수체로 용존되는 microcystins의 량은 세포내에 존재하는 양의 극히 일부임을 확인 할 수 있었고 세포내에 분포하는 microcystins의 농도는 종류에 따라 차이를 보여 microcystin-RR>-LR>-YR의 순으로 존재하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 옥정호과 제천천을 대상으로 한 수심별 조사에서도 동일한 양상을 보였다. 수체에서 검출된 microcystins의 양은 점성물질의 양과 함께 light와 dark 상태에 따라 뚜렷한 차이를 보였으며 light의 경우 $r^{2}$값이 -0.75의 역의 상관관계를 보였다. 남조류 세포 및 microcystins에 대한 light와 dark 상태에서의 서로 다른 농도 결과는 배양 상태에 따른 미생물의 분해양상의 차이와 미생물에 대한 점성물질의 영향으로 추정된다.

  • Polyethylene-GOX (PE-GOX) 조합의 추진제를 사용하는 하이브리드 모터의 성능 예측 모델을 제시하였다. 성능에 영향을 미치는 인자들에 대해 자세한 고찰이 이루어 졌으며, 연료의 후퇴율과 산화제 조절 밸브의 개폐 응답 특성을 고려한 비정상 지배방정식을 구성하고 연소 중 O/F(산화제/연료)비에 따라 변화하는 열역학 데이터를 고려한 4차 Runge-Kutta 수치기법으로 해를 구하여 실험결과와 비교하여 잘 일치함을 확인하였다. 또한 연소 중 그레인의 후퇴율과 O/F비등의 성능 변수들의 영향을 분석하였다.

팔당호 내 식물플랑크톤 안정동위원소 분석을 통한 유기물 기원 평가 (Evaluation of Organic Matter Sources of Phytoplankton in Paldang Reservoir using Stable Isotope Analysis)

  • The organic matter sources of phytoplankton and related environmental factors influencing algal bloom in Paldang reservoir were studied using nitrogen and carbon isotope ratio(${\delta}^{15}N$, ${\delta}^{13}C$). Phytoplankton samples for stable isotope analysis were collected from four points in reservoir using a plankton net. Physicochemical water quality, algal taxa and hydrological data were collected from published monitoring material. Phytoplankton samples were analyzed by IRMS. CN ratio of each sample was very similar to that of phytoplankton from literature cited. ${\delta}^{15}N$ of each sample was decreased during July. Mixing and dilution of nitrogen sources due to increment of influx by concentrated rainfall were considered as the main reason for the decline of ${\delta}^{15}N$. Based on analyzed ${\delta}^{15}N$ value of each sample, nitrogen source of Bughan river sample was presumed to come from soil. The nitrogen sources of Namhan river and Kyeongan stream samples seemed to be sewage or animal waste. Low ${\delta}^{15}N$ value in August (2012) seemed to be influenced by isotope fractionation due to the blooming of nitrogen-fixation blue-green algae (Anabaena spp.). Variation in ${\delta}^{15}N$ values particularly by blue-green algal bloom was considered the important factor for estimating the organic matter sources of phytoplankton.

염도와 수온의 변화가 Vibrio vulnificus의 생존에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Salinity and Temperature on the Survival of Vibrio vulnificus)

  • Vibrio vulnificus is a gram-negative, halophilic, oxidase-positive, lactose-positive, motile, rod shaped bacterium that has been associated with primary septicemia and wound infection. Elucidating the growth and survival of V. vulnificus in ecological conditions is of great importance to develop sanitary measure against this microorganism. Thus we simulated the ecological conditions and evaluated the effect. About $10^5\;CFU/ml$ of V. vulnificus was inoculated to fresh water, brackish water $(1\%\;NaCl)$, sea water $(3\%\;NaCl)$, and bottom deposit solution. The same concentration of V. vulnificus was also inoculated to distilled water, $1\%\;NaCl$ solution and $3\%\;NaCl$ solution as controls. These were stored at 4, 15 and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively and were used to assess the effects of temperature and salinity on the survival of V. vulnificus. In fresh water V. vulnificus could not survive regardless of storage temperature. In case of brackish water and sea water survival time of V. vulnificus was the longest at $25^{\circ}C$, and the number of V. vulnificus was decreased most rapidly at $4^{\circ}C$. V. vulnificus survived longer in brackish water than in any other conditions. In bottom deposit solution containing brackish water, the survival time of V. vulnificus was longer and the rate of decline was slower than that in brackish water. These results indicate that both biological and physicochemical factors such as temperature and salinity could affect survival of V. vulnificus. V. vulnificus, damaged in normal fresh water, did not grow on TCBS agar of selective plating medium but grew on BHI agar plate; However, V. vulnificus was recovered by addition of salt and nutrient materials.
