  • Tidal bore is a peculiar nature phenomenon which is caused by the lunar and solar gravitation. Based on the physical characters of tidal bores, in this paper we propose a novel method to model and render this phenomenon, especially the tidal waves in Qiantang estuary. According to Boltzmann equation for tidal waves, we solve it with the novel triangle mesh of Kinectic Flux Vector Splitting (KFVS) mode. Then a method combining a curve forecasting wave and particles model is proposed to render the dynamic scenes of overturning tidal waves. Finally, with some rendering technologies, various realistic tidal waves under diversified conditions is rendered in real time.

  • The latest educational curriculum in Korea started in 1997, and the 'Departmentalized Classroom System', which is a distinguishing modern concept compared with conventional pedagogy, has already been used in several high schools since 2009 and will be expanded to all middle school and high schools by 2014. However, most Korean schools are not yet physically ready to implement the new system. Moreover, despite many trials during the last three years, the characteristic and architectural function of a place called 'Home-base' is still vague and has caused many controversial arguments. In fact, a large number of home-base designs failed to accomplish their original task and there are counter evidences that shows reality was quite different over architect's personal and subjective radical plan. Therefore, this study seeks to introduce and objective scientific method based on an mathematical model of an optimized algorithm for planning a home-base area in a school design. The algorithm developed in this study is designed to determine the most efficient location for a home-base area to minimize the distance students typically need to walk.

  • To predict the system coverage in the middle frequency(MF) band, it is required to know the antenna efficiency at a base station. However, calculating the accurate efficiency is difficult since the efficiency may change according to the area where the antenna is installed. Thus, this paper proposes a method to obtain the antenna efficiency of a base station in the MF band from the measurement. This method uses the measured field strengths and the attenuation model in the MF band. Therefore, an attenuation model which is used in the proposed method is presented at first. Then, the process of the proposed method is followed using detailed explanations. Finally, antenna efficiencies of base stations which are currently operating are obtained by applying the proposed method and the usefulness of the obtained results are verified by comparing with ideal efficiencies.

  • The magneto-rheological (MR) damper contributes to the new technology of structural vibration control. Its developments and applications have been paid significant attentions in earthquake engineering in recent years. Due to the shortages, however, inherent in deterministic control schemes where only several observed seismic accelerations are used as the trivial input and in classical stochastic optimal control theory with assumption of white noise process, the derived control policy cannot effectively accommodate the performance of randomly base-excited engineering structures. In this paper, the experimental and analytical studies on stochastic seismic response control of structures with specifically designed MR dampers are carried out. The random ground motion, as the base excitation posing upon the shaking table and the design load used for structural control system, is represented by the physically based stochastic ground motion model. Stochastic response analysis and reliability assessment of the tested structure are performed using the probability density evolution method and the theory of extreme value distribution. It is shown that the seismic response of the controlled structure with MR dampers gain a significant reduction compared with that of the uncontrolled structure, and the structural reliability is obviously strengthened as well.

  • Adopting sloped rolling-type isolation devices underneath a raised floor system has been proved as one of the most effective approaches to mitigate seismic responses of the protected equipment installed above. However, pounding against surrounding walls or other obstructions may occur if such a base-isolated raised floor system is subjected to long-period excitation, leading to adverse effects or even more severe damage. In this study, real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS) is adopted to assess the control performance of a smart base-isolated raised floor system as it is an efficient and cost-effective experimental method. It is composed of multiple sloped rolling-type isolation devices, a rigid steel platen, four magnetorheological (MR) dampers, and protected high-tech equipment. One of the MR dampers is physically tested in the laboratory while the remainders are numerically simulated. In order to consider the effect of input excitation characteristics on the isolation performance, the smart base-isolated raised floor system is assumed to be located at the roof of a building and the ground level. Four control algorithms are designed for the MR dampers including passive-on, switching, modified switching, and fuzzy logic control. Six artificial spectrum-compatible input excitations and three slope angles of the isolation devices are considered in the RTHS. Experimental results demonstrate that the incorporation of semi-active control into a base-isolated raised floor system is effective and feasible in practice for high-tech industry.

  • In wireless sensor networks, adversaries may physically capture sensor nodes on the fields, and use them to launch false positive attacks (FPAs). FPAs could be conducted by injecting forged or old sensing reports, which would represent non-existent events on the fields, with the goal of disorientating the base stations and/or reducing the limited energy resources of sensor nodes on the fields. Researchers have proposed various mitigation methods against FPAs, including the statistical en-route filtering scheme (SEF). Most of these methods are based on key pre-distribution schemes and can efficiently filter injected false reports out at relay nodes through the verification of in-transit reports using the pre-distributed keys. However, their filtering power may decrease as time goes by since adversaries would attempt to capture additional nodes as many as possible. In this paper, we propose an adaptive key distribution method that could maintain the security power of SEF in WSNs under such circumstances. The proposed method makes, if necessary, BS update or re-distribute keys, which are used to endorse and verify reports, with the consideration of the filtering power and energy efficiency. Our experimental results show that the proposed method is more effective, compared to SEF, against FPAs in terms of security level and energy saving.

  • In this paper, an experimental hybrid method, which implements the earthquake response control of a building structure with a TLD(Tuned Liquid Damper) by using only a TLD as an experimental part, is proposed and is experimentally verified through a shaking table test. In the proposed methodology, the whole building structure with a TLD is divided into the upper TLD and the lower structural parts as experimental and numerical substructures, respectively. At the moment, the control force acting between their interface is measured from the experimental TLD with shear-type load-cell which is mounted on shaking table. Shaking table vibrates the upper experimental TLD with the response calculated from the numerical substructure, which is subjected to the excitations of the measured interface control force at its top story and an earthquake input at its base. The experimental results show that the conventional method, in which both a TLD and a building structure model are physically manufactured and are tested, can be replaced by the proposed methodology with a simple experimental installation and a good accuracy for evaluating the control performance of a TLD.

  • Physically and chemically activated carbons (ACs) exhibited high adsorption capacities for organic and inorganic pollutants compared with other adsorbents due to their expanded surface areas and wide pore volume distribution. In this work, seven steam-ACs with different burn-off have been prepared from cotton stalks. The textural properties of these sorbents were determined using nitrogen adsorption at $-196^{\circ}C$. The chemistry of the surface of the present sorbents was characterized by determining the surface functional C-O groups using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, surface pH, $pH_{pzc}$, and Boehm's acid-base neutralization method. The textural properties and the morphology of the sorbent surface depend on the percentage of burn-off. The surface acidity and surface basicity are related to the burn-off percentage. A theoretical model was developed to find a mathematical expression that relates the % burn-off to ash content, surface area, and mean pore radius. Also, the chemistry of the carbon surface is related to the % burn-off. A mathematical expression was proposed where % burn-off was taken as an independent factor and the other variable as a dependent factor. This expression allows the choice of the value of % burn-off with required steam-AC properties.

  • The bobsleigh is a winter sport which use a sled to slide down an ice-covered course. There is a big expectation for having a training environment and being able to train year round. At present, training is very limited due to the season or course facilities. A variety of VR (Virtual Reality) equipment has been developed in recent years, and it is beginning to spread. We have also made our contribution in bobsleigh simulation. The reactive force applied in our bobsleigh simulation is much smaller than that of a real bobsleigh. This paper proposes a method to enhance reactive force of bobsleigh simulation in real time. The reactive force is magnified instantly in the physically-based simulation. The Laplacian filter is applied to the sequence of reactive force, this technique is often used in the field of image processing. The simulation is comprised of four large scale surround screens and a 6-D.O.F. (Degree Of Freedom) motion system. We also conducted an experiment with several motion patterns to evaluate the effectiveness of enhancement. The experimental results proved useful in some cases.
