  • It is well known that rock properties can be affected by loading in underground condition. In the case of flooded underground mine or tunnels, rock properties variation due to loading might be different from the loading in dry condition. In order to verify the influence of saturated loading condition on rock properties, various laboratory tests had been carried out. Loading on the rock specimen was controlled to be ranged in between 20 ~ 80% of UCS. By comparing the variation of thermal, mechanical, and physical properties of rock specimens under the same load in saturated and dry condition, it was possible to find that the rock properties can be more significantly disturbed in the saturated loading condition than in dry loading condition.

  • It is well known fact that all rocks exhibit brittle properties and time depends strain properties (creep). An understanding of the time dependent deformation behaviour of rocks is believed to be essential in the field of civil and tunnelling. The rock and concrete creep in various forms of loading conditions and physical environment are reviewed. A comparison of creep behaviour between rocks and concrete is provided, in order to bring two existing relatively independent methods of predicting creep strain closer together. It was felt that the physical process in the creep of rocks would be similar to the process in creep of concrete. Since experiments and observations have shown that non-elastic (creep) mechanical behaviour of all crystalline solids (i.e., concrete, rocks, ceramics and refractories) and single materials have a common base. Also a comparison of the results for the accepted methods of estimating creep in rocks and concrete under - multiaxial loading was attempted to extend the knowledge of deformational characteristics of these two materials.

  • Thin, high-strength steel roof cladding is widely used in residential and industrial low-rise buildings and is susceptible to failure during severe wind storms such as cyclones. Current cladding design is heavily reliant on experimental testing for the determination of roof cladding performance. Further study is necessary to evolve current design standards, and numerical modelling of roof cladding can provide an efficient and cost effective means of studying the response of cladding in great detail. This paper details the development of a numerical model that can simulate the static response of corrugated roof cladding. Finite element analysis (FEA) was utilised to determine the response of corrugated cladding subject to a static wind pressure, which included the anisotropic material properties and strain-hardening characteristics of the thin steel roof cladding. The model was then validated by comparing the numerical data with corresponding experimental test results. Based on this comparison, the model was found to successfully predict the fastener reaction, deflection and the characteristics in deformed shape of the cladding. The validated numerical model was then used to predict the response of the cladding subject to a design cyclone pressure trace, excluding fatigue effects, to demonstrate the potential of the model to investigate more complicated loading circumstances.

  • Obesity is a worldwide disease caused by the excessive proliferation of adipocytes. Multiple factors, including melatonin and physical loading, are involved in the control of obesity. Melatonin has been shown to induce apoptosis on preadipocytes while physical loading such as fluid shear stress (FSS) affects the proliferation and differentiation of adipocytes. Here, we studied the combined effects of melatonin and FSS on 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. For physical loading, preadipocytes were stimulated with a maximum dynamic fluid shear stress of 1 Pa at 1 Hz for 2 hours with/without melatonin. The experiment conditions were divided into four groups: (1) control, (2) 1 mM melatonin treatment, (3) FSS, and (4) combined 1 mM melatonin and FSS. All groups had a fixed duration time of 2 hours. ERK, p-ERK, COX-2, $C/EBP{\beta}$, $PPAR{\gamma}$, osteopontin, Bax, caspase-3 and caspase-8 proteins were assessed by Western blot analysis. GAPDH was used as a control. Results showed that combined melatonin and FSS treatment activated the ERK/MAPK pathway but not COX-2. Furthermore, combined melatonin and FSS treatment significantly decreased $C/EBP{\beta}$ and $PPAR{\gamma}$ compared to other groups. However, caspase-3 and caspase-8 did not result in significant changes. In summary, combined melatonin and FSS appears to have the potential to inhibit adipogenesis and treat obesity.

  • Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are natural carriers of biomolecules that play central roles in cell-to-cell communications. Based on this, there have been various attempts to use EVs as therapeutic drug carriers. From chemical reagents to nucleic acids, various macromolecules were successfully loaded into EVs; however, loading of proteins with high molecular weight has been huddled with several problems. Purification of recombinant proteins is expensive and time consuming, and easily results in modification of proteins due to physical or chemical forces. Also, the loading efficiency of conventional methods is too low for most proteins. We have recently proposed a new method, the so-called exosomes for protein loading via optically reversible protein-protein interaction (EXPLORs), to overcome the limitations. Since EXPLORs are produced by actively loading of intracellular proteins into EVs using blue light without protein purification steps, we demonstrated that the EXPLOR technique significantly improves the loading and delivery efficiency of therapeutic proteins. In further in vitro and in vivo experiments, we demonstrate the potential of EXPLOR technology as a novel platform for biopharmaceuticals, by successful delivery of several functional proteins such as Cre recombinase, into the target cells.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the changes in kinematic and kinetic parameters of lower extremity joint according to rehabilitation period. Fourteen collegiate male athletes(age: $22.1{\pm}1.35$ years, height: $182.46{\pm}9.45cm$, weight: $88.63{\pm}9.25kg$) and fourteen collegiate athletes on functional ankle instability(age: $21.5{\pm}1.35$ years, height: $184.45{\pm}9.42cm$, weight: $92.85{\pm}10.85kg$) with the right leg as dominant were chosen. The subjects performed drop landing. The date were collected by using VICON with 8 camera to analyze kinematic variables and force platform to analyze kinetic variables. There are two approaches of this study, one is to compare between groups, the other is to find changes of lower extremity joint after rehabilitation. In comparison to the control group, FAI group showed more increased PF & Inversion at IC and decreased full ROM when drop landing. Regarding the peak force and loading rate, it resulted in higher PVGRF and loading. FAI group used more increased knee and hip ROM because of decreased ankle ROM to absorb the shock. And it used sagittal movement to stabilize. In terms of rehabilitation period, FAI group showed that landing patterns were changed and it increased total ankle excursion and used all lower extremity joint close to normal ankle. Regarding the peak force and loading rate, FAI group decreased PVGRF and loading rate. and also showed shock absorption using increased ankle movement. And COP variable showed that proprioception training increased stability during 8 weeks. The results of this study suggest that 8 weeks rehabilitation period is worthwhile to be considered as a way to improve neuromuscular control and to prevent sports injuries.

  • Increased temperature adversely affects the reliability of a device. So, package material should have high thermal diffusion, i.e., high thermal conductivity. And, there are several other physical properties of polymeric materials that are important to microelectronics packaging, some of which are a low dielectric constant, a low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), and a high flexural strength. In this study, to get practical maximum packing fraction of AIN (granular type) filled EMC, the properties such as the spiral flow, thermal conductivity, CTE, and water resistance of AIN-filled EMC (65-vol%) were evaluated according to the size of AIN and the filler-size distribution. Also, physical properties of AIN filled EMC above 65-vol% were evaluated according to increasing AIN content at the point of maximum packing fraction (highly loading condition). The high loading conditions of EMC were set $D_L/D_S$=12 and $X_S$=0.25 like as filler of sphere shape and the AIN filled EMC in this conditions can be obtained satisfactory fluidity up to 70-vol%. As a result, the AIN filled EMC (70-vol%) at high loading condition showed improved thermal conductivity (about 6 W/m-K), dielectric constant (2.0~3.0), CTE(less than 14 ppm/$^{\circ}C$) and water resistance. So, the AIN filled EMC (70-vol%) at high loading condition meets the requirement fur advanced microelectronic packaging materials.

  • Microcracks in rock materials, whether natural or induced, provide useful information on the engineering performance of in situ rockmasses. A population of preferentially oriented microcracks has observable effects on the physical properties of a rockmass, but their effects may not be evident if the rock material is highly anisotropic due to other causes. An experimental program was undertaken to investigate the effect of rock fabrics on the physical properties of rock materials. In this study, anisotropy in the circumferential wave velocity and the direction of induced fractures under axial point loading were measured. Rock specimens (NX-size) of the leucocractic Pocheon granite were cored from rock blocks, retaining the relative directions of each specimen. Another set of specimens was prepared from the rock cores of the same meterial, obtained in the field. The master orientation line (MOL) was set to be the representative direction of the microcracks in the specimen. Variation of the circumferential wave velocity of each specimen was then measured along the core, keeping the MOL as reference. The direction of the minimum wave velocity was nearly perpendicular to the direction of the MOL. Coring of smaller-sized (EX-size), concentric specimens from the NX specimens were then followed, and axial point loading was applied. The direction of induced fractures due to axial point loading was closely related to the MOL direction, confirming the prior test result.

  • In order to quantify the relationships of the important physical factors relating failure to strong earthquake loading, the plastic fatigue problems for structural components under repeated loading were reviewed first. A new concept of very low cycle fatigue failure for structural components under severe cyclic excitations as in strong earthquakes was represented. Also, an experimental study was made of the very low cycle fatigue failure of structural steel elements. It was attempted to realize the ultimate failure in the course of loading repetitions of the order of several to twenty. The test specimen had a form of rectangular plate, representing a thin-plated element in a steel member as wide-flange cross section. It was subjected to uniaxial loading repeatedly, until complete failure takes place after undergoing inelastic buckling, plastic elongation and/or their combination. It was seen as a result that the state of the ultimate failure is closely related to the maximum strain at the extreme fiber in the cross section.

  • The optimum loading of carbon black was studied for the rubber compounds of natural rubber(NR), butadiene rubber(BR), and styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR) with different amount of oil. The optimum loading of carbon black was determined by the volume ratio of carbon black and L factor of Lee's theory. The optimum loading of carbon black was confirmed by the examination of physical properties of the rubbers. The optimum loading amounts of carbon black for the each rubber compound were 60 phr for NR, 57 phr for BR, 65 phr for SBR-A, 70 phr for SBR-B, and 76 phr for SBR-C, respectively. The optimum loading of carbon black was increased by 5 phr for every increment of 20 phr of oil content. It was revealed that the optimum loading amount of carbon black determined by L factor is closely related to the tensile strength of the rubber compounds. The optimum loading amount of carbon black was observed at the amount which shows the maximum value of tensile strength.
