  • Thin films synthesized by plasma processes have been widely applied in a variety of industrial sectors. The structure control of thin film is one of prime factor in most of these applications. It is well known that the structure of this film is closely associated with plasma parameters and species of plasma which are electrons, ions, radical and neutrals in plasma processes. However the precise control of structure by plasma process is still limited due to inherent complexity, reproducibility and control problems in practical implementation of plasma processing. Therefore the study on the fundamental physical properties that govern the plasmas becomes more crucial for molecular scale control of film structure and corresponding properties for new generation nano scale film materials development and application. The thin films are formed through nucleation and growth stages during thin film depostion. Such stages involve adsorption, surface diffusion, chemical binding and other atomic processes at surfaces. This requires identification, determination and quantification of the surface activity of the species in the plasma. Specifically, the ions and neutrals have kinetic energies ranging from ~ thermal up to tens of eV, which are generated by electron impact of the polyatomic precursor, gas phase reaction, and interactions with the substrate and reactor walls. The present work highlights these aspects for the controlled and low-temperature plasma enhanced chemical vapour disposition (PECVD) of Si-based films like crystalline Si (c-Si), Si-quantum dot, and sputtered crystalline C by the design and control of radicals, plasmas and the deposition energy. Additionally, there is growing demand on the low-temperature deposition process with low hydrogen content by PECVD. The deposition temperature can be reduced significantly by utilizing alternative plasma concepts to lower the reaction activation energy. Evolution in this area continues and has recently produced solutions by increasing the plasma excitation frequency from radio frequency to ultra high frequency (UHF) and in the range of microwave. In this sense, the necessity of dedicated experimental studies, diagnostics and computer modelling of process plasmas to quantify the effect of the unique chemistry and structure of the growing film by radical and plasma control is realized. Different low-temperature PECVD processes using RF, UHF, and RF/UHF hybrid plasmas along with magnetron sputtering plasmas are investigated using numerous diagnostics and film analysis tools. The broad outlook of this work also outlines some of the 'Grand Scientific Challenges' to which significant contributions from plasma nanoscience-related research can be foreseen.

  • There are more than 2000 minerals on earth, and it has been implemented in various fields such as environment, architecture, livestock, chemistry, pharmaceuticals. Clay minerals are considered that they can change the physical and chemical properties through the adsorption and release of metal ions. Although domestic deposit of non-metallic mineral resources is approximately ninety-six billion tons, its application is limited and has hardly been used in high value-added industries involved in medicine, medical supplies, and functional food materials. Bentonite and zeolite are already used for cosmetic purposes and also used in living goods and packing materials. However, direct application to the food industry is relatively very rare. Since records regarding the intake of minerals for foods and medicines are found in the old literatures, the utilization of non-metallic minerals as food materials appears to be highly profitable. According to the trends in patent research for food and mineral resources, the company plays a main role for the development of the food containing non-metallic minerals in USA, and the trends confirms that this industry is emerging. Here, we provided the information about domestic and foreign patent trend for food industries involved in mineral resources and the application of mineral resources in the food industries. We also covered the domestic regulation regarding usage of mineral resources in food, and proposed domestic application plan for food production using mineral resources in the future.

  • The objective of this study was to analyze temporal trends of water chemistry and spatial heterogeneity for 13 sampling sites of the Keum River watershed using water quality dataset (obtained from the Ministry of Environment, Korea) during $2001{\sim}2005$. The water quality, based on eight physical and chemical parameters, varied largely depending on the years, seasons, and sampling sites. Seasonal and annual means of conductivity, used as a key indicator for a ionic dilution declined during the monsoon season, and nutrients (TN and TP), based on overall mean of all sites, showed marked declines during the monsoon, compared to those of the premonsoon. In the mean time, BOD and COD had no significant relations with a precipitation, in spite of some differences in the sampling sites. In contrast, major input of SS occurred during the period of summer monsoon. and the variation of TN was similar to that of TP. Spatial trend analyses of all parameters, except for DO and temperature, showed that Site 9 acted as a point source, and thus, water quality at the locations of $S9{\sim}S13$ declined abruptedly over 2 fold, compared to locations of $S1{\sim}S8$. Based on the overall dataset, efficient water quality management in the point source tributary streams is required for better water quality of the main Keum River.

  • The present study was carried out to investigate the relationships among intertillage and muddying by free-ranging ducks (Chinese native ducks) and pH, dissolved oxygen of irrigation water, and physicochemical properties of soil. Two paddy fields comprised of the muddying (muddy water without physical stimulation to a rice plant by the ducks) and the control plots (no ducks) were used for this study. As a muddying plot, 50 hills were randomly selected and each hill was fenced with a wire net in order to prevent from stimulating physically by the ducks. The variation in irrigation pH was smaller in the muddying plot than the control plot, and the pH was around 7.4. Dissolved oxygen was significantly higher (P<0.01) in the muddying plot than the control plot during the first half period after the ducks were introduced. Then it decreased rapidly as the rice plants grew in all plots. The contents of the suspended soil and turbidity in irrigation water were not changed over the free-ranging period, but $\textrm{NH}_3\textrm{-N}$ and $\textrm{P}_2\textrm{O}_5$ were decreased by intertillage and muddying by the ducks. There were no differences in both the soil physics and chemistry between the muddying plot and the control plot during and after finishing of the free-ranging period. These results indicate that intertillage and muddying by the ducks resulted in a small variation in stagnant water pH, and reduced the dissolved oxygen and $\textrm{P}_2\textrm{O}_5$, although the physiochemical properties of soil were not changed.

  • Most human bones of Joseon Dynasty period are so good condition that we can do research in physical anthropology, genetics and chemistry with them. In this study, we analyzed DNA typing using 6 human bones of Joseon dynasty period excavated at Janggi-dong, Gimpo. The DNA typing was mitochondrial DNA haplotype, Y-chromosome haplotype and sex determination. Prior to DNA analysis, we distinguished histological index of 6 human bones. As the result of mitochondrial DNA analysis, most of bones were confirmed as haplogroup G, R11, M7, A5, etc. As the result of sex determination, 4 human bones were female and 2 human bones were male. The male haplogroup was confirmed as haplogroup O by the single nucleotide polymorphism analysis of Y chromosome. For extensive ancient human bone analysis, researchers need to apply a histological index to select ancient human bones and explain a relationship among ancient human bones with various analyses of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA.

  • In this study, We have investigated the kinetics on the char-$CO_2$ gasification reaction. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) experiments were carried out for char-$CO_2$ catalytic gasification of an Indonesian Roto lignite. $Na_2CO_3$, $K_2CO_3$, $CaCO_3$ and dolomite were selected as catalyst which was physical mixed with coal. The char-$CO_2$ gasification reaction showed rapid an increase of carbon conversion rate at 60 vol% $CO_2$ and 7 wt% $Na_2CO_3$ mixed with coal. At the isothermal conditions range from $750^{\circ}C$ to $900^{\circ}C$, the carbon conversion rates increased as the temperature increased. Three kinetic models for gas-solid reaction including the shrinking core model (SCM), volumetric reaction model (VRM) and modified volumetric reaction model (MVRM) were applied to the experimental data against the measured kinetic data. The gasification kinetics were suitably described by the MVRM model for the Roto lignite. The activation energies for each char mixed with $Na_2CO_3$ and $K_2CO_3$ were found a 67.03~77.09 kJ/mol and 53.14~67.99 kJ/mol.

  • Purpose: Development of a latent antimicrobial soft liner is strongly needed to overcome a possible inflammation related with its dimensional degrade or surface roughness. Modified tissue conditioner (TC) containing chitosan-doped silver nanoparticles (ChSN) complexes were synthesized and assessed for their characterizations. Materials and methods: ChSN were preliminarily synthesized from silver nitrate (AgNO3), sodium borohydride (NaBH4) as a reducing agent and chitosan biopolymer as a capping agent. Ultraviolet-visible and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were conducted to confirm the stable reduction of nanoparticles with chitosan. Modified TC blended with ChSN by 0 (control), 1.0, 3.0 and 5.0 % mass fraction were mechanically tested by ultimate tensile strength (UTS), silver ion elution and color stability (n=7). Results: At 24 hour and 7 day storage periods, UTS values were not significant (P>.05) as compared with pristine TC (control) and silver ion was detected with the dose-dependent values of ChSN incorporated. Color stability of TC were influenced by ChSN add, with the higher doses, the significantly greater color changes (P<.05). Conclusion: A stable synthesized ChSN was acquired and modified TC loading ChSN was characterized as silver ion releasing without detrimental physical property. For its clinical application, antimicrobial test, color control and multifactor investigations are still required.

  • Water potential which is an physical chemistry and thermodynamic indicator expressed water status of plant root, stem and fruit could be use as a useful indicator for growth control of hydroponically grown muskmelon plant. Linear relationship was observed between EC and water potential of nutrient solution, consequently increment of EC related to the decreasing water potential and resulted with the alteration of water potential and solute potential of upper leaves. Rapid reduction in growth was observed in over 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of Cu concentration in the media and same tendency was recorded in the shoot fresh weight, root dry weight and chlorophyll content. Increment of Cu concentration in the nutrient solution leads to lower the growth rate and then the water potential of upper leaves. Turgor pressure was not affected the growth of hydroponically grown muskmelon and also Cu concentration of nutrient solution was not recognized the direct relationship to the growth characteristics of muskmelon. These results demonstrated that water potential of nutrient solution can be use as an useful indicator for water physiological comparison of plant growth in hydroponically grown muskmelon.

  • In spite of extensive knowledge of the surface chemistry and the transport mechanism in filtration systems, there is still insufficient understanding of the physical characteristics of suspensions and the system components. Because of this, no filtration mechanisms are mathematically generalized to the full extent. The purpose of this paper is to propose experimental equations for the filtration process. using the tracer study in filter layer. Some of results are as follows. (1) The Volume of the specific deposit (${\sigma}$) in filtration was directly measurable using the tracer study without interrupting the filtration. (2) It was also confirmed that the head loss in filtration was greatly in fluenced by the micro-air babbles. (3) The correction coefficient(f) was introduced into the Kozeny-Carman equation in order to apply it for the clogging filter media. The coefficient(f) was experimentally obtained. The total head loss of the filter media is given by next equation. $${\frac{h}{h_0}}={\frac{1}{L}}{\int}^{z=L}_{z=0}f({\sigma})g({\varepsilon}_0,{\sigma})dz$$ $$f=aexp(-b{\sigma})$$ The above equation was applicable without regard to the variation of the suspension concentration, the filter medium diameter, the filter depth, the filtration velocity, and the amount of aluminum in all continuous filtration experiments. (4) The total head loss was graphically generalized assuming mathematical filtration models I II (see fig. 7,8) (5) The total head loss was obtained from the filtration model in the field filtration conditions. (see fig. 9,10)
