  • This study examined the physical activity and dietary patterns of university students in Nairobi County and compared to their weight status. The study was a cross-sectional analytical design with a sample of 260 undergraduate students randomly selected from two private and two public universities. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to gather information from students. Students weight and height measurements were also obtained. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 22. The study results showed that 53.5% of the students met the recommended levels of moderate physical activity and 18.8% of the students met the recommended levels of vigorous physical activity. Majority of the students consumed fast foods sweetened beverages and pastries most times in a week. The study also showed that 31.2% of the students were overweight and 6.2% were obese. The study reveals that most students did not achieve the recommended levels of vigorous physical activity and showed some poor dietary patterns. Findings show clear evidence of high prevalence of overweight among university students but focus should be on fitness rather than fatness. Efforts should be made to promote physical activity participation and good dietary practices within university environments.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between physical activity and sleep patterns of the elderly. Methods: The subjects of this study were 154 elderly who visited a community senior center in Korea. Data was collected by an interview and a self reported questionnaire, during the period from June to October, 2006. Physical activity was measured by IPAQ Korean version(2006), and sleep pattern by Korean Sleep Scale A developed by Oh et al.(1998). Results: The prevalence of chronic illness in the subjects was 73.4 %. The mean time of vigorous activity was $6.62{\pm}31.27$ minutes/day during the past week. Moderate activity time was $28.85{\pm}50.31$ minutes/day and walking time was $28.85{\pm}50.3$ minutes/day. The total sleep time was $397.63{\pm}111.53$ minutes/day. Physical activity of the elderly significantly correlated with sex, chronic illness, job, and sleep patterns of the elderly. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor of sleep pattern was the satisfaction of sleep. A combination of the number of chronic illnesses, moderate physical activities(MET), and total time of sleep accounted for 44.4% of the sleep pattern. Conclusions: Moderate physical activity is more effective than vigorous physical activity for improving the sleep quality of the elderly.

  • This study analyzed the relationship between GPS-based physical activity patterns and mental health using Kaggle Student Life data. Data were collected over a 10-week period from 48 students at Dartmouth College through Android smartphones and included GPS, dark, and phone lock data, and measures such as the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Loneliness Scale, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), and Perceived Stress Scale. Using latitude and longitude data obtained from GPS measurements, various physical activity indicators were calculated, including the total distance traveled, average distance traveled, average distance traveled in the morning, average distance traveled in the afternoon, average distance traveled in the evening, and average distance traveled in the middle of the night. Pearson's correlation analysis was performed to explore the relationship between GPS-based physical activity patterns and mental health. The study results indicated a significant negative correlation between the average distance traveled in the afternoon and PHQ-9 scores. Results indicated that the higher the afternoon activity, the lower the depressive symptoms. There was a positive correlation be-tween the PANAS-Pos score and the average distance traveled in the evening, indicating that positive emotions tended to increase as evening activities increased. This finding suggests a relationship between physical activity at specific times and mental health.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to recognize change of menstrual patterns and dysmenorrhea according to obesity indices and physical activity in female college students. Methods: From March 22nd to May 14th, 2010 we researched 1,407 women students at OO College by questionnaires to investigate their menstruation, dysmenorrhea, obesity and physical activity. Results: 1. Triglyceride(TG) was decreased statistically in the regular group of menstrual cycle as compared with the irregular group. 2. Menstrual duration was not associated with obesity indices. 3. Higher BMI was associated with more menstrual amount. 4. Dysmenorrhea was increased with decreasing BMI. 5. Neither menstrual patterns nor dysmenorrhea were associated with physical activity, but dysmenorrhea was decreased in minimally active group. Conclusion: This study showed the significant effect of menstruation and dysmenorrhea on obesity indices and physical activity. Obesity is related to menstruation and dysmenorrhea, but physical activity isn't related to them.

  • Purpose: Hypertension tends to increase after the age of 65. Proper hypertension management requires physical activities such as habitual activities and exercise. However. it is reported that many elders do not have regular physical activities. This study was to identify physical activity patterns and blood pressure according to physical activity in the elderly with hypertension. Methods: This study assessed physical activity frequency, amount, type during the latest one week, and blood pressure and BMI. The subjects were 53 elders aged over 65 years. Collected data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, $x^2-test$, and logistic regression analysis using SPSS 12.0. Results: It was found that most of the subjects had not been participating in regular physical activities. The most frequent physical activity patterns were walking and home activity at a low or moderate intensity. The elderly who met the normal hypertension and pre-hypertension criteria involved significantly more regular physical activities. Conclusion: This study suggested that regular participation in physical activities should be recommended for elders in order to optimize the state of their blood pressure.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of normal timing according to angular motion in PNF patterns on electromyography (EMG) activity in rectus abdominis, internal oblique abdominal muscle, external oblique abdominal muscle, and erector spinae. Methods: Ten healthy adults volunteered to participate in this study. The participants were required to complete following two PNF extremity patterns; upper extremity extension- adduction-internal rotation pattern with $180^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and lower extremity flexion- adduction-external rotation pattern with $0^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$. A paired t-test was used to determine the influence of the two PNF patterns on muscle activity in each muscle. Descriptive statistics were used to determine the ratio of local muscle activity to global muscle activity. Results: In terms of their effect on applied normal timing, the upper and lower extremity pattern significantly affected the rectus abdominis, internal oblique, external oblique, and erector spinae (p < .05). The upper extremity pattern (at an extension angle of $30^{\circ}$) and the lower extremity pattern ((at a flexion angle of $90^{\circ}$) influenced the rectus abdominis, internal oblique, external oblique, and erector spinae (p < .05). Conclusion: The effect of the upper and lower extremity patterns on applied normal timing was significant in that these patterns increased trunk muscle activation. The upper extremity pattern (at an extension angle of $30^{\circ}$) and the lower extremity pattern (at a flexion angle of $90^{\circ}$) increased trunk muscle activation. Normal timing is required to increase trunk muscle strength and extremity movement.

  • Thirty normal adults were tested to measure the electrical activity of the anterior (AD), middle (MD), and posterior portion (PD) of the deltoid muscle and sternal portion of the pectoralis major muscle (PM) during the performance of four upper extremity PNF diagonal patterns with elbow flexion angle in $0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$. The PNF patterns in which these muscles function optimally have been theoretically advanced by Kabat and further described by Knott and Voss. They theorize that the MD should be most active with shoulder flexion, abduction, and external rotation (D2F); the PD with shoulder extension, abduction, and internal rotation (D1E); the AD with shoulder flexion, adduction, and external rotation (D1F); and the PM with shoulder extension, adduction and internal rotation (D2E). The patterns were performed through range of motion, with an isometric contraction performed in the shortened range. When the EMG activity of AD, MD, PD and PM in its optimal patterns was measured, it does not have significant difference among fixed elbow flexion angle $0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$ (p>.05). In addition, suggestions were made for study of patients who exhibit imbalance of muscle strength and have muscle weakness.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the patterns and interrelationships for meeting recommendations of physical activity, sedentary behavior, and dietary behavior in elementary school students. A cross-sectional design was used to assess 259 students ages 11 to 13 years. Physical activity (moderate to vigorous physical activity $\geqq$60min/day), sedentary behavior (viewing time for TV, computer, DVD, video, etc<3hr/day), and dietary behavior (servings of fruits and vegetables$\geqq$5times/day) were categorized into two levels: meeting recommendations or not meeting recommendations. Parents' health behaviors and home environmental variables were assessed with self-reported measures. Chi-squared tests and independent t-tests were conducted to compare anthropometric variables and the prevalence of students not meeting the recommendation for the three health behaviors. Comparison between males and females and logistic linear regression were used to determine the interrelationships of three health behaviors. 25.9% of students did not meet the physical activity recommendations. 15.4% did not meet sedentary behavior recommendations, and 41.7% did not meet dietary recommendation. Only 39.8% of students met all three recommendations, but 19.0% did not meet over two recommendations. Patterns that simultaneously did not meet two recommendations were: sedentary and dietary behavior in males (8.1%), and physical activity and dietary behavior in females (10.4%). Students who did not meet dietary recommendations were at greater risk of not meeting physical activity (OR 2.76; 95% CI 1.15 to 6.64), and sedentary behavior (OR 3.07; 95% CI 1.15 to 8.16) compared with students who did meet dietary recommendations. The findings of this study support not an independent behavior approach but a multiple behavior approach taking into account gender and interrelationships among the three behaviors.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the activation of shoulder stabilizer muscles to variations of manual resistance during three-dimensional shoulder rehabilitation exercises. Methods: A total of 13 participants were included in this study. To normalize each muscle's activity, a maximal isometric voluntary contraction was performed by all participants. After receiving 30 minutes of training in three-dimensional shoulder rehabilitation exercises, participants randomly performed PNF arm and scapular patterns according to the intensities of manual resistance. The activities of the upper trapezius, lower trapezius, and serratus anterior were measured during these patterns. All exercises were performed for five seconds, and the average of three seconds, excluding the first and last seconds, was used for data analysis. Results: Lower trapezius activity was significant among manual resistance intensities. In both the PNF arm and scapular patterns, using 80% manual resistance of maximum resistance showed higher activity of the lower trapezius muscle compared to 20% of the maximum resistance. Conclusion: It is expected that PNF arm and scapular patterns, with varying intensities of manual resistance, can be used for early rehabilitation of patients with shoulder impingement syndrome.
