Objective: About one-third of college students are exposed to stress to the point that their academic performance is negatively affected. To provide useful information for managing the mental health of young people by analyzing the perceived stress level, depression level, and life satisfaction according to the amount of physical activity and the level of muscular strength in male college students. Design: A cross-sectional study. Methods: Among 304 students who participated in the health exercise class at Sahmyook University in Seoul, the amount of physical activity and the level of muscular strength were divided into 3 quartiles, respectively, and the perceived stress level, depression level, and life satisfaction were analyzed through one-way ANOVA. The physical activity level and muscle strength level of the subjects were ranked, divided into 3 groups, and the difference in variables according to the group was verified. Results: There was no difference in perceived stress level, depression level, and life satisfaction according to the amount of physical activity, but statistically significant differences were shown in perceived stress scale(p=0.008) and life satisfaction(p=0.030) according to muscular strength. Conclusions: Policies to increase physical activity are important to improve and manage the mental health of young people, but it is judged to be more meaningful to provide an environment that can improve muscular strength.
Purpose: This study was to the investigate recognition of physical activity between physical therapy students (PTS) and non-physical therapy students (NPTS) by measuring the level of physical activity using International Physical Activity Questionnaires (IPAQ). Methods: A cross-sectional survey was completed by 191 university students. The IPAQ with an additional question (Is physical activity necessary for your future job?) was used to evaluate the recognition and the amount of physical activity. The collected data were calculated as MET-minutes scores and were classified as walking, moderate, and vigorous level of physical activity. The students were analyzed by dividing them into those who had a part-time employment (16 PTS and 12 NPTS) and those who did not have a part-time employment (80 PTS and 83 NPTS). Results: In students with a part-time employment, no significances were observed between the PTS and NPTS, in terms of MET, frequency and time of physical activity, and sitting time (p>0.05). In students without a part-time employment, the NPTS was significantly higher than the PTS for the MET and frequency of physical activity in a vigorous level (p<0.05), and there were no significant differences in other levels of physical activity (p>0.05). In the additional question, the PTS showed a slightly higher than the NPTS (p<0.05). Conclusion: The physical therapy students did not remarkable barrier to recognition of physical activity, but there was a difference in their recognition of the vigorous level of physical activity. Therefore, the understanding of physical activity for PTS would play an important role in the recognition of how physical activity can be promoted.
Objectives: The prevalence of insufficient physical activity is relatively high in the Republic of Korea and it is increasing. The national strategies to improve physical activity are essential and are suggested in this paper. Methods: National level of physical activity is compared globally by WHO statistics. Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey showed the level of physical activity. National strategies to improve physical activity were suggested referring to the other countries' strategies, public health books and Health Plan 2020. Results: Prevalence of insufficient aerobic exercise in 2010 were 33.4%, 94.8% in over and 18 years old, 11~17 years old, respectively. And it is increasing. Sufficient exercise to fit the national guidelines of physical activity were done by 15.6% of Korean older and 19 years old. Prevalence of insufficient physical activity was high in the elderly, female, adolescent, rural area and lower income. The national spread of the physical activity guidelines, primary care physicians involvement, supports for the physical activity programs, development of the evaluation protocol for the programs and environmental supports are suggested. Conclusions: The government induced various efforts to improve the level of physical activity is needed urgently.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the level of physical activity and to identify factors related with physical activity for the elderly with Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Methods: The subjects were 154 diabetic outpatient at 3 hospitals located in J city. Data were collected from February 1 to 17 in 2012. Data were analysed using Chi-square test, ANOVA, and logistic regression by SPSS/WIN 18.0. Results: Mean physical activity level per week measured by International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was $2247.01{\pm}2533.73$ MET-minutes (minimally active). There were significant differences in the level of physical activity by age, spouse, education, job, admission, duration of DM, and DM therapy. There were significant differences in subjective health status, objective and subjective obesity, satisfaction with physical body, perception of aging, self-efficacy, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and social support among the inactive, minimally active, and health enhancing physical activity groups. Factors influencing the level of health enhancing physical activity were spouse (OR=10.192), self-efficacy (OR=5.351), subjective obesity (OR=.114), and perceived barriers (OR=.069). Conclusions: The level of physical activity of elderly patients with DM was minimally inactive. Physical activity program enhancing self-efficacy and decreasing perceived barriers, as well as improving the correct perception of subjective obesity is recommended as a nursing intervention.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of physical activity on smoking experience and smoking intensity in Korean high school students. Methods: This cross sectional study used secondary data from the 2013 Adolescent Health Behavior Online Survey. A total of 35,905 high school students were included in the study. Logistic regression was used for analysis of the influence of moderate and vigorous physical activity on smoking experience in a month and smoking intensity. Results: Adolescents with low (Adjusted OR: 1.242, 95% CI: 1.075~1.436) and moderate level (Adjusted OR: 1.094, 95% CI: 1.005~1.189) of moderate physical activity had more smoking experience than reference group, high level of physical activity. Also, smoking experience was more prevalent adolescents with low (Adjusted OR: 1.191, 95% CI: 1.064~1.333) and moderate level (Adjusted OR: 1.134, 95% CI: 1.039~1.237) of vigorous physical activity. Heavy smoking was more prevalent among adolescents who had low level of vigorous physical activity (Adjusted OR: 1.912, 95% CI: 1.347~2.712). Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, physical activity has significant influence on smoking experience and smoking intensity. Therefore, physical activity should be included smoking cessation and smoking prevention program for High School Students.
This study was designed to investigate the effects of dietary calcium. serum estrogen level and physical activity on the bone status of 116 healthy elderly women living in urban area. Current calcium intake was assessed by convenient method(refered to as Ca intake) and calcium containing food frequency method(refered to as Ca index) Daily activity record was used for the estimation of physical activity level, and serum estrogen level was measured from fasting blood of subjects. The rate of bone resorption was evaluated by the determination of hydroxyproline(Hpr) in fasting urine with correction for creatinine excretion. The results of this study are summarized as follows : 1) Average daily Ca intake of subjects was 621.4$\pm$155.8mg, which is above the Korean recommended dietary allowances. However 44.8% of the subjects consumed Ca below RDA level. Ca index score was significantly correlated with the bone status(P<0.05), Ca intake did not show significant correlation with the bone status although a positive trend of influence was evident. 2) Average serum estrogen level of subjects was 18.7$\pm$9.8pg Contrary to our anticipation. estrogen level did not show any significant relation to age and bone status. 3) Daily physical activity was classified into four categories by activity intensity : sedentary. moderate, active and severe. The average physical activity of subjects belong to moderate level. and the bone status was significantly related to the physical activity(P<0.01) 4) Among other influential factors such as age, pocket-money. family type. drinking, smoking and BMI, there was a significant difference between bone status and BMI(P<0.05). 5) Multiple regression analysis of variables showed that physical activity has greater effect than other variables when the entire subjects were taken into account. However. eliminating the subjects whose bone status rated as excellent(Hpr/cr<0.009), Ca index showed higher correlation than physical activity. These results have demonstrated that dietary calcium intake is the primary important factor for keeping good bone health and that bone status of subjects with a sufficient calcium intake is affected by various factors such as physical activity, age, smoking. BMI and others.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate whether a medium to high degree of total physical activity and indoor physical activity were associated with reduced all-cause and cardiovascular mortality among elderly Korean women. Methods: A prospective cohort study was done to evaluate the association between physical activity and mortality. The cohort was made up of elderly (${\geq}65$ years of age) subjects. Baseline information was collected with a self-administered questionnaire and linked to death certificates retrieved from a database. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence interval (CI) levels. Results: Women who did not suffer from stroke, cancer, or ischemic heart disease were followed for a median of 8 years (n=5079). A total of 1798 all-cause deaths were recorded, of which 607 (33.8%) were due to cardiovascular disease. The group with the highest level of total physical activity and indoor physical activity was significantly associated to a reduced all-cause mortality (HR, 0.60; 95% CI, 0.51 to 0.71 and HR, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.50 to 0.67, respectively) compared to the group with the lowest level of total physical activity and indoor physical activity. Additionally, the group with the highest level of total physical activity and indoor physical activity was significantly associated to a lower cardiovascular disease mortality (HR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.40 to 0.71 and HR, 0.51; 95% CI, 0.39 to 0.67, respectively) compared to the group with the lowest level of total physical activity and indoor physical activity. Conclusions: Our study showed that regular indoor physical activity among elderly Korean women has healthy benefits.
Background: In the rehabilitation of stroke patients, regular physical activity is very important not only as a treatment for maximal functional recovery but also as a strategy to prevent the recurrence of stroke. The purpose of this study was to objectively measure the amount of physical activity in people with stroke, and to examine the differences in motor and cognitive function according to a level of physical activity. Design: A cross-sectional study. Methods: Physical activity (GENEActiv), motor function (Fugl-Meyer Assessment), cognitive function (Montreal Cognitive Assessment-Korean version), and the Korean version of Modified Barthel Index were evaluated in adult stroke patients with hemiplegia. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in the level of physical activity according to the motor and cognitive function. There was no statistically significant difference in motor and cognitive function according to the level of physical activity, but there was a statistically significant difference in the MBI (p<.01). Conclusion: As a result of the difference in the MBI according to the level of physical activity, it was found that the more moderate to vigorous physical activities are performed, the higher the independence in daily living. These results can be interpreted as that the more often you participate in physical activities such as physical therapy (gait training), the better your independence in ADL. Since regular physical activity participation of adult stroke patients can improve daily living performance, it is considered necessary to participate in physical activities such as continuous physical therapy.
Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the level of physical activities at time points of pre-illness and current treatment, and the differences in body mass index (BMI), anxiety, depression and fatigue according to their physical activity in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: The survey was used with 126 cancer patients undergoing daily chemotherapy at injection room, cancer clinic of C University Hospital in G city. Data were collected from June to September, 2009 using a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, chi-square, Fisher's exact test and t-test using SPSS/WIN15.0. Results: The significant increase in physical activity was reported from pre-illness to the time in treatment (${\chi}^2$=69.027, p<.001). The anxiety level of the group with increased physical activity was significantly lower than those who did not (t=-2.218, p =.028). There were no significant differences in BMI, depression, and fatigue according to physical activity. Conclusion: The level of physical activity was significantly associated with the anxiety level of the cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Cancer patients should been encouraged regular physical activity during chemotherapy treatment. And an appropriative nursing intervention should be established in order to motivate cancer patients to increase physical activity.
Objectives: The researchers investigated the relationship among fun seeking, self-efficacy, interest in physical activity and actual physical activities of male college students, in orders to provide valuable information to professionals in health promotion. Methods: The participants were 316 male college students whose ages ranged from 18 to 30(M=22.53, SD=2.09). The questionnaires and psychological tests used in this research included the following: sub-scale of Korean Version of BAS/BIS Scale, The General Self-Efficacy Scale, International Physical Activity Questionnaires, & sub-scale of The Intrinsic Motivation Inventory for physical activity. Results: Results indicated that male students who had moderate level of fun seeking were more likely to engage in physical activities than those who showed low or high level of fun seeking. And students with the strong self-efficacy were more likely to do physical activity than with the weak self-efficacy, especially high level of physical activity. Male students who had greater interest in physical activity were more likely to engage in physical activities than those who were not interested in physical activity. A regression analysis revealed that interest in physical activity accounted for the most variance; it accounted for around 14.5% variance of actual physical activity with self-efficacy. The interaction effect of self-efficacy and interest in physical activity was significant for actual physical activity. Conclusion: This study reiterates the roles of self-efficacy and the interest in physical activity on physical activity, and found that non-linear relation of fun seeking to physical activity. These results may provide useful information for health practitioners.
