  • The kinetics of the reaction of methyl mercaptan into aqueous diethanolamine were studied over a range in temperature ($20^\~60{\circ}C$) and amine concentrations (0-40 $wt\%$) using a wetted-sphere absorber. The physicochemical properties needed to interpret the data are the solubility and diffusivity of methyl mercaptan in the aqueous diethanolamine solution. The density and the viscosity were obtained and correlated in the experimental range. The Wilke Chang equation was applied to estimate the diffusion coefficient. The enhancement factor was found to be high temperature is below than low temperature. It means the absorption rate with chemical reaction is lower than the physical absorption rate.

  • On-going research has recently documented the certain tobacco specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) are formed during the curing process by an interaction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) contained in combustion gases and naturally occurring compounds in the tobacco leaves. Although the role of TSNAs in human health have been extensively investigated, little research has been conducted on the physical and chemical phenomena relating to their formation during curing. In this paper, we developed a mathematical model for describing NOx absorption into green (uncured) tobacco. We found considerable uptake of NOx by green tobacco with variations related to several factors. Specifically, tobacco from the lower stalk positions (bottom one third) absorbs more NOx gas per unit weight than tobacco from upper stalk positions. Additionally, the green tobacco packed with a density of 0.103 g/㎤ absorbs more NOx gas per unit weight than either 0.0443 g/㎤ or 0.0739 g/㎤. Further, the NOx absorption increases proportionally with temperature with the maximum absorption point around 4$0^{\circ}C$.

  • Dielectric strength of insulators made of epoxy composites rapidly decreases due to ageing to interfaces between the matric resin and filler particles. The adhesion variation of interfaces caused by moisture absorption also alters electrical properties that are the basic characteristics of insulators, particularly, in outdoor use. In this paper, electrical properties of epox/SiO$_2$composites were investigated at boiling absorption condition to observe the influences of moisture. In order to analyze the basic physical properties of samples, scanning electron microscopy and DC, AC and impulse voltage dielectric strength were measured. Also, the breakdown time of samples was measured under AC 6[kV] applied voltage, and the variation of lifetime was verified by using Weibull distribution function.

  • The icy mantles of interstellar grains are developed by the freeze-out of interstellar molecules and atoms onto grain surfaces. The ice molecules become more complex by surface chemistry induced directly by high energy photons or by the thermal energy diffused over heated grain surface. Therefore, the ice composition is an important tracer of physical conditions where the ices form. Ices have been studied via their absorption features against continuum sources, such as young stellar objects or evolved background stars, in infrared wavelengths. The Spitzer IRS was the most sensitive spectrometer for the observations of infrared ice absorption features. We has been developing an automated analysis tool for the Spitzer IRS spectra, especially for the 15 ㎛ CO2 bending mode. The 15 ㎛ CO2 absorption feature is very useful for the study of accretion process in star formation since its spectral shape varies with thermal condition of the dust grains. Eventually, this tool will cover the whole range of the Spitzer IRS spectrum (5~20 ㎛).

  • In order to reveal physical conditions of molecular gas in active galaxies (active galaxies mean both starbursts and AGNs in this paper), we carried out systematic observations (R = 19 ~ 120) of CO fundamental band at $4.7{\mu}m$ in absorption with AKARI. We also made follow-up CO absorption observations at higher spectral resolution (R = 5000 ~ 1000) with Subaru. Recently, Herschel made extensive observations of highly-excited CO lines in emission in the far-infrared. The two data sets (absorption and emission) sometimes provide us with apparently inconsistent results. One case is starburst galaxies: Subaru observations showed low temperature of molecular gas toward the starburst NGC 253, while Herschel detected highly excited CO lines in the starburst. This suggests that warm molecular clouds are more deeply embedded than newly formed star clusters. The other case is obscured AGNs; Herschel detected highly excited CO lines in emission in nearby AGNs, while AKARI and Subaru observations showed CO absorption only in some of the obscured AGNs. This could reflect the difference of nature of molecular tori in these AGNs. We propose the combination of the absorption and emission observations as an effective tool to reveal geometry of warm molecular clouds in active galaxies.

  • If the fiber reinforced plastic is exposed to the moisture for a long period of time, most of moisture absorption occurs on the resin place, thus dropping cohesiveness between the molecules as the water molecules permeated between high molecular chains grant high molecular mobility and flexibility. Also as the micro crack occurs due to the permeation of moisture on the interface of glass fiber and epoxy resin, it is developed to the overall damage of interface place. Hence, the study on absorption is essential as the mechanical and physical properties of fiber reinforced composites are reduced. However, the study on absorption has the inconvenience needing to expose composite materials to fresh water or seawater for 1 month or up to 1 year. Therefore, this study has exposed fiber reinforced composites to fresh water and has developed a model with an accuracy of 98% after comparing the analysis value obtained by using ANSYS while basing on the experimental value of property decline by absorption and the basic properties of glass fiber and epoxy resin used in the experiment.

  • Generally, strength degradation is caused by the absorption of moisture in composites. For this reason, a fracture is generated in the composites and traces of glass fiber degrade human health and physical damage is generated. Therefore, in this research, we studied the mechanical properties change of composites by moistureabsorption. The composites were manufactured with and without the Gel-coating process and were immersed in a moisture absorption device at $80^{\circ}C$ for more than 100 days. The mechanical properties of the moistureabsorption composites and the composites which dry after moisture-absorption were compared. The mechanical properties degradation of basalt fiber composites according to the result of the measurement of moistureabsorption was smaller than that of glass fiber composites by about 20%. In addition, the coefficient of moisture absorption was lower for the case of Gel-coating processing than the composites without the Gel-coating process by about 2% and it was deduced that Gel-coating did not have a significant effect on the mechanical properties.

  • The challenge of replacing conventional plastics with biodegradable composite materials has attracted much attention in product design, particularly in the tensile-related areas of application. In this study, fibres extracted from oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) were treated and utilized in reinforcing polyester matrix by hand lay-up technique. The effect of fibre loading and combined influence of alkali and silane treatments on porosity and water absorption parameters, and its correlation with the tensile behaviour of composites was analyzed. The results showed that tensile strength decreased whilst modulus of elasticity, water absorption and porosity parameters increased with increasing fibre loading. The composites of treated oil palm EFB fibre exhibited improved values of 2.47 MPa to 3.78 MPa for tensile strength; 1.75 MPa to 2.04 MPa for modulus of elasticity; 3.43% to 1.68% for porosity and 3.51% to 3.12% for water absorption at respective 10 wt.% fibre loadings. A correlation between porosity and water absorption with tensile behavior of composites of oil palm EFB fibre and positive effect of fibre treatment was established, which clearly demonstrate a connection between processing and physical properties with tensile behavior of fibre composites. Accordingly, a further exploitation of economic significance of oil palm EFB fibres composites in areas of low-to-medium tensile strength application is inferred.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the water absorption and thickness swelling of biocomposites at room temperature. These properties of bio-composites mainly depend on the ability of the agro-flour to absorb water through hydrogen bonding between water and the hydroxyl groups of the holocellulose and lignin in the cell wall. As the content of agro-flour increased, the water absorption and thickness swelling of the bio-composites increased. The effects of agro-flour content and rice husk flour (RHF) particle size on the water absorption and thickness swelling of the bio-composites were evaluated. In general, wood-based materials showed significantly higher water absorption and thickness swelling than the bio-composites. This might be attributed to the ability of the polybutylene succinate (PBS) hydrophobic polymer to prohibit the water absorption and thickness swelling of the bio-composites, Therefore, the use of agro-flour filled PBS bio-composites, which exhibit improved dimensional stability in comparison with wood-based materials, is recommended.

  • FLASH is a blind neutral hydrogen (HI) absorption line survey, eventually targeting about 100,000 background radio continuum sources in the entire southern sky using the full 36-antenna of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). Our primary goal is to search for associated and intervening HI absorption lines in the intermediate redshift range 0.4 < z < 1.0. The survey aims to understand the evolution of HI gas in galaxies as well as various physical mechanisms in active galactic nuclei, such as accretion and feedback processes. In this poster, we give an overview of the FLASH survey and present the preliminary results from our first 100-hrs of pilot observations. The latest survey data covers 1,000 square degrees and is ideal for validating observation and data processing in the continuous 300MHz-width low frequency ASKAP band (700-1000MHz). One of the crucial objectives of the pilot survey is to establish the analysis methodology that will be applied to upcoming large absorption surveys in the future. We discuss our data quality validation and present some detections of associated/intervening HI absorption lines. These absorption lines allow us to trace the cold gas properties of active and normal galaxies at higher redshifts where the HI emission line is too weak to be detectable.
