  • Purpose : This study used a sarcopenia diagnostic algorithm proposed by the Asia working group in adults over 50 to diagnose sarcopenia and analyze body function. The purpose of this study is to prepare basic data for the management and prevention of sarcopenia. Methods : We performed a diagnostic evaluation of sarcopenia in 97 adults over the age of 50 years with the cooperation of the Seongnam senior experience complex in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do. As a result of the diagnostic process, 24 subjects were placed into the sarcopenia group, while 73 subjects were placed into the normal group. We measured each subject's body, performed the timed up and go test to evaluate functional mobility, and conducted a questionnaire on the pre-symptom of locomotive syndrome and locomotive syndrome. Results : There were statistically significant differences in height, weight, and skeletal muscle mass between the two groups. There was also a statistically significant difference in the timed up and go test, which confirmed the difference in functional mobility between the two groups. In addition, there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in the proportion and the mean score of subjects with pre-symptom of locomotive syndrome and locomotive syndrome. In the correlation analysis, grip strength was statistically significantly correlated with height, weight, skeletal muscle mass, waist circumference, timed up and go test, pre-symptom of locomotive syndrome and locomotive syndrome. Gait speed was significantly correlated with the timed up and go test and locomotive syndrome. Appendicular skeletal muscle index was significantly correlated with height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, and the pre-symptom of locomotive syndrome. Conclusion : In conclusion, sarcopenia is closely related to height, weight, skeletal muscle mass and functional mobility, as well as the pre-symptom of locomotive syndrome and, locomotive syndrome. In consideration of this, the prevention and management of sarcopenia should be made accordingly.

  • Purpose: To develop a expressive writing program for women with breast cancer and to identify its effects on stress physical symptom, cancer symptom, anxiety, depression, and QOL. Methods: A non-equivalent control pre-post design was used. Participants were recruited from self-help groups in six hospitals and were assigned to the experimental group (29) or control group (29). Data were collected before, after, and at four weeks after the intervention program. Changes in the variables were evaluated to test effects of the developed program, using $X^2$-test, Fisher's exact test, repeated measures ANOVA, and paired t-test. Results: The expressive writing program was developed for women with breast cancer based on Pennebaker's expressive writing. Significant differences were found between the two groups for stress related to physical symptoms ($p$<.00) and quality of life ($p$=.024). No significant differences were found in cancer symptoms, anxiety, or depression between the two groups. Conclusion: The results indicate that the expressive writing program designed to express cancer-related deep thoughts and emotions helps in decreasing physical symptoms and improving QOL. Further studies are needed to identify the effect on emotions such as anxiety and depression for women with breast cancer with above average levels of anxiety and depression.

There were significant differences in oral habits, TMJ symptoms, physical and psycho-emotional symptoms according to Systemic disease. And stress, physical, psycho-emotional symptoms, oral habits and TMJ symptoms were correlated to one another. Stress exerted a direct influence on physical, psycho-emotional symptoms, and psycho-emotional symptoms had a direct impact on physical symptoms, oral habits and TMJ symptoms. Physical symptoms exercised a direct influence on oral habits and TMJ symptoms, and oral habits affected TMJ symptoms in a direct way. physical, psycho-emotional symptoms and oral habits served as parameters that produced partial mediation effects, and the two factors had an indirect impact on TMJ symptoms. Conclusions : It's found that stress exerted direct and indirect influence on oral parafunction and TMJ symptoms. Like other diseases, oral habits and TMJ symptom that stem from stress is likely to lead to chronic diseases if the two are not noticed at the right time. • Purpose: The study aimed to explore the health consequences that women experienced after miscarriage and the factors related to them. Methods: A convenience sample consisting of 102 women who had miscarried within 2 years was used. Women were recruited from hospitals and enterprises in Seoul and Gyeong-Gi Province. Participants completed a self-administered questionnaire containing a physical and psychological symptoms checklist developed for this study. Results: More than 40% of the miscarriages occurred after 9 weeks of pregnancy and 35% of women were found to have had a previous miscarriage prior to this study. Psychological symptoms were more prevalent and prolonged than the physical symptoms, furthermore, the frequencies of the symptoms experienced were not consistent with the duration of symptoms. Employed women and women with early miscarriages complained of more physical symptoms; however, psychological symptoms were not different according to women's characteristics. Employment was a significant factor affecting physical symptoms. Conclusion: Health care professionals need to inform and educate women and the family of the potential health changes during the recovery after the miscarriage. Health consequences due to miscarriages also need to be incorporated in women's reproductive health care. Nursing care should consider factors of maternal age, employment status, and obstetrical conditions upon the apparent social changes.

  • It is not common in rehabilitation situation to encounter patients exhibiting paralysis or other disabilities which have no apparent organic basis. Even without organic causes for their signs and symptoms these patients often require comprehensive treatment and management. Patients with conversion disorder often pose particular difficulties because of diagnostic confusion and the lack of therapeutic strategies for rehabilitation management. We feel that systematic functional rehabilitation is helpful in resolving symptom and recovering normal function in the patient suffering from conversion disorder since it provides motivation and reduces reinforcements which contribute to sustained disabled state. This report describes the patient with hysterical motor paralysis who is successfully treated with structured physical therapy. The objectives of this report are to provide therapeutic guidelines for physical therapy and to emphasize the role of physical therapist in the assessment and treatment of hysterical paralysis.

  • Hospice, a concept of care for dying patients, focuses on providing comfort measures rather than aggressively searching for a cure. Hospice addresses symptom control from a wholistic view under the direction of an interdisciplinary team. Physical therapy fits with many of the tenets of hospice, such as the interdisciplinary team, inclusion of the patient and family as the care unit, provision of treatment in various in and out patient settings, and attention to the comfort of the patient. Physical therapy educators must recognize the need for medical ethics, psychosocial and medicolegal issues to be incorporated throughout the curriculum.

Method: The participants were 188 people who had liver(86), kidney(81), or heart(24) transplanted. Data on the demographic characteristics, transplantation-related characteristics, symptom frequency or discomfort measured by Transplant Symptom Frequency and Symptom Distress Scale by Lough et al(l987), and health related quality of life measured by SF-36(version 2) were collected. Result: Overall health related quality of life score was 492.1 for 100scoring and, 344.9 for norm based. Physical functioning showed the highest quality of life score (77.5) and vitality showed the lowest(51.l). The kidney transplanted showed the highest quality of life (504.4) and the heart transplanted showed the lowest(426.7) Quality of life was related with occupation(p=.016) and symtom discomfort(p < .0001). Conclusion: The health related quality of life of transplated patients was lower than the norm of American. Further studies need to be done to identify the norm of Korean and to investigate the effect of releving symptom discomfort on the increasing the health related quality of life.
