  • Placement is an important step in the physical design of VLSI circuits. It is the problem of placing a set of circuit modules on a chip to optimize the circuit performance. The most popular algorithms for placement include the cluster growth, simulated annealing and integer linear programming. In this paper we propose a genetic algorithm searching solution space for the placement problem, and then compare it with simulated annealing by analyzing the results of each implementation.

  • In this study, a method determining the local bond-slip model from pure shear test results of CFRP sheet-concrete adhesive joints is proposed and local bond-slip models are presented. Adhesive joints with a specific bond-slip model, which is assumed as multi-linear curve in order to represent arbitary function, are solved numerically. The difference between the solution and test results are minimized for finding the bond-slip model. The model with bilinear curve is also optimized to verify the improvement of multi-linear model. The selected test results are ultimate load-adhesive length curves from a series of adhesive joints and load-displacement curves for each joint. The optimization problem is formulated by physical programming, and the optimized bond-slip model is found using genetic algorithm.

  • Educational tools for infants and younger students are becoming smarter as ICT-based digital technology convergence extends according to the development of technology. As the digital interaction function of smart education tools gives students greater immersion and fun, a learning might become a play to the students. The technologies used in the implementation of smart education tools come from the disciplines of robotics, computer engineering, programming, and engineering and mathematical foundations and these can be integrated into the field of education itself. This paper designs and implements a product based on optimized physical computing for R&D and education in consideration of the characteristics of educational tool robots used in the field education. It was developed to enable physical education for sensing information processing, software design and programming practice training that is the basis of robot system.

  • We consider a routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) for the efficient operation of WDM networks. For a given physical network, a set of selected pairs of nodes, the number of required connections for each selected pair of nodes, and a set of available wavelengths, the RWA is to realize as many connections as possible without wavelength collision. We give an integer programming formulation and an algorithm based on column generation. Though the proposed algorithm does not guarantee optimal solutions, test results show that the algorithm gives probably good solutions.

  • A binary integer programming model is proposed for a complex timetabling problem in a university faculty which conducts various degree programs. The decision variables are defined with fewer dimensions to economize the model size of large scale problems and to improve modeling efficiency. Binary matrices are used to incorporate the relationships between the courses and students, and the courses and teachers. The model includes generally applicable constraints such as completeness, uniqueness, and consecutiveness; and case specific constraints. The model was coded and solved using Open Solver which is an open-source optimizer available as an Excel add-in. The results indicate that complicated timetabling problems with large numbers of courses and student groups can be formulated more efficiently with fewer numbers of variables and constraints using the proposed modeling framework. The model could effectively generate timetables with a significantly lower number of work hours per week compared to currently used timetables. The model results indicate that the particular timetabling problem is bounded by the student overlaps, and both human and physical resource constraints are insignificant.

  • In this paper, we consider the routing and wavelength assignment problem in survivable WDM transport network without wavelength conversion. We assume the single-link failure and a path protection scheme in optical layer. When a physical network and a set of working paths are given, the problem is to select a link-disjoint protection path for each working path and assign a wavelength for each working and protection path. We give an integer programming formulation of the problem and propose an algorithm to solve it. Though the formulation has exponentially many variables, we solve the linear programming relaxation of it by using column generation technique. We devise a branch-and price algorithm to solve the column generation problem. After solving the linear programming relaxation, we apply a variable fixing procedure combined with the column generation to get an integral solution. We test the proposed algorithm on some randomly generated data and test results show that the algorithm gives very good solutions.

  • To take the Far-infrared(FIR) ray which is a optimized wavewlength and strength, at first, it is to be induced the characteristic algorithm and the computerized programing of FlR radiating materials. In this study, we induced that the formular of optimized FIR with physical, mathematical logic and theory, especially, Plank, Kirchhoff, Wien, Stefan-Boltzmann's logic and law. In the long run the formular was induced with mathematical integration. since we had to know the molecular wavelength. Base on the induced formular as above, we programmed the optimized FlR radiating computerized program, it would be useful to design semiconductor( VLSI) as the FlR instrument center control system.

  • This study describes design and development techniques of estimation models for process modeling. One case study is undertaken to design a model using standard gas furnace data. Neural networks (NN) and genetic programming (GP) are each employed to model the crucial relationships between input factors and output responses. In the case study, two models were generated by using 70% training data and evaluated by using 30% testing data for genetic programming and neural network modeling. The model performance was compared by using RMSE values, which were calculated based on the model outputs. The average RMSE for training and testing were 0.8925 (training) and 0.9951 (testing) for the NN model, and 0.707227 (training) and 0.673150 (testing) for the GP model, respectively. As concern the results, the NN model has a strong advantage in model training (using the all data for training), and the GP model appears to have an advantage in model testing (using the separated data for training and testing). The performance reproducibility of the GP model is good, so this approach appears suitable for modeling physical fabrication processes.

  • Block-based educational programming language(EPL) is commonly used due to its availability at low or no cost. It is also preferred tool of computing education due to its intuitive design, ease-of-use and its effectiveness in increasing algorithmic thinking abilities especially in elementary students. Physical computing is also necessary because it brings students closer to real-world problem solving by connecting the real world with the computing environment. However, due to high-cost and required knowledge in electrical engineering, many schools find the education difficult to access. The study shows significant increase in computational thinking abilities in both groups treated with EPL and additional physical computing education.
