Standardization work for the ocean data produced by a variety of national oceanographic research projects was conducted in order to establish a national ocean data sharing system. For this work, we first prepared standard proposals for the national research ocean data by reviewing and analyzing of existing international and domestic ocean-data standards. The proposed standards were reviewed and revised by experts in the field of oceanography and academic societies for documentation. The 125-page technical report on the standards of 25 data items was prepared as an output of this research work, which is available free of charge for the public and interested parties. This paper explains the proposed standards of metadata and codes regarding the common properties of all the oceanographic data items. Especially, the standards for the metadata, codes and data formats of 4 physical data items were described in detail. In order to be adopted as the national standards for ocean data, however, the standards suggested here require further development and/or modification based on additional reviews of and ample feedbacks from the relevant academic and technical communities.
Even though state-of-the-art general circulation models is improved step by step, the seasonal predictability of the East Asian summer monsoon still remains poor. In contrast, the seasonal predictability of western North Pacific and Indian monsoon region using dynamic models is relatively high. This study builds canonical correlation analysis model for seasonal prediction using wind fields over western North Pacific and Indian Ocean from the Global Seasonal Forecasting System version 5 (GloSea5), and then assesses the predictability of so-called hybrid model. In addition, we suggest improvement method for forecast skill by introducing the lagged ensemble technique.

Satellite-borne altimeters are one of the most important global ocean measurement and monitoring techniques available to modern oceanographers. While the U.S. Navy's GEOdetic SATellite (GEOSAT) mission in the mid-eighties firmly established its value, the full potential of satellite altimetry was not realized until the launch of the NASA/CNES TOPEX/Poseidon precision altimeter in 1992. The bubble size distribution is critical information to understand sound propagation and ambient noise in the ocean. To estimate the bubble size distribution in a bubbly water, the sound attenuation has been only in the conventional acoustic bubble sizing method without considering the sound speed variation. However, the effect of the sound speed variation in bubbly water cannot be neglected because of its compressibility variation. The sound attenuation is also affected by the sound speed variation. In this paper, a coherent acoustic bubble sizing inverse technique is introduced as a new bubble sizing technique with considering sound speed variation as well as the sound attenuation. This coherent sizing method is theoretically verified with the bubble distribution functions of single-size, Gaussian, and power-law functions. Its numerical test results with the coherent acoustic bubble sizing method show good agreement with the given bubble distributions.
In microwave remote sensing, the Fresnel reflectance formula is widely used in the sea surface emissivity modeling. As an essential contribution to microwave remote sensing, a new formula on the Fresnel reflectance has been derived based on our understanding of the complex index of refraction and continuity condition of E-M waves at the interface between two mediums. The proposed formula can be used to obtain the emissivity of sea surface, which is useful to retrieve sea surface temperature, sea surface salinity and the brightness temperature. Considering Bragg-resonant scatter, it is useful for the calculation of the normalized radar cross-section, and the retrieval of sea surface wind either.
Observations by CTD castings, moored current meters and satellite imageries reveal some physical characteristics of the area around the tidal mixing front found in the mid-Yellow Sea off Korea. Tidal mixing is the greatest at the promontory of Taean Peninsula with a front around it. The front appears in April with the start of solar heating, becomes most clear in August and disappears in November with the start of surface cooling. In the north of the front, tidal fluctuations of temperature and salinity induced by tidal currents manifest the existence of the front, Differently from the usual tidal mixing front, the front in Kyunggi Bay is formed by presence of the water discharged from the Han River which meets the offshore water at the front. Near the surface cold center, vertically well-mixed zone extends to about 50 Km offshore from the coast, Farther south, this structure is generally retained but with lesser degree of vertical mixing. Within the relatively well-fixed coastal zone, the fresh water discharged from the Kum River makes another salinity front of smaller extent. At some places around this salinity front, an Upwelling-like feature is remarked.
The time variation in the Kuroshio is studied by use of nine observed distances of the main Kuroshio axis from the Japanese coast. The observed distances over 1975 - 1995 are estimated from the Prompt Report of Oceanographic Conditions published by Hydrographic Department of the Maritime Safety Agency of Japan. It is shown that large sea level difference between Naze and Nishinoomote, which represents the volume transport of the southern inflow south of Kyushu, coincides with larger distance of the Kuroshio in the upstream area from off Kyushu to off eastern Kii Peninsula and smaller distance in the downstream area from off Omae-zaki to off Boso Peninsula. In contrast, large sea level difference between Nishinoomote and Aburatsu, which represents the volume transport of northern inflow south of Kyushu, corresponds to smaller distance in the upstream area and larger distance in the downstream area. Path dynamics of the Kuroshio is discussed with reference to the variation in Volume transport south of Kyushu.

Physical properties of mudbelt sediments in the southeastern inner shelf of Korea are studied from 14 cores. Physical properties, compressional wave velocity, and sediment texture for core sediments are analyzed. The major source of sediment in the study area is the Nakdong River. Fine-grained sediments from the river are transported northeastward by coastal circulation and the Tsushima Current, resulting in a gradual northeastward increase in porosity and a decrease in wet bulk density and velocity. The trend matches well with the bathymetry. The mean grain size appears to be the most important variable to determine the physical properties and velocity. The variations of physical properties with burial depth are dependent more strongly on sediment texture than compaction and/or consolidation. Correlations between the physical properties and the sediment texture show slight deviations from those of the continental terrace sediment in the North Pacific and inner shelf sediment in the South Sea of Korea. The velocity is higher than that of the North Pacific and the South Sea sediments between these areas. This is probably due to differences in sedimentary, environment and mineral compositions. The higher sediment velocity in the study area may also be attributed to the escape of gas from pore space which decreases void ratio.

Lake Shihwa, artificially constructed since 1988, shows a typical two-layered system depending on strong haline density stratification. Sill of the water gate at 6 m depth greatly restricts physical mixing with outer seawater and circulation in the lake, and contributes to the enhancement of anoxic environment in the deeper layer. With this enclosed physical environment, Lake Shihwa receives enormous amounts of organics, ammonia, and other pollutants from the neighboring municipal and industrial complexes through six major streams, thus developing biogeochemical differentiation of anoxic to suboxic environment in the high saline bottom water and highly eutrophicated brackish surface water. This study investigated vertical structures, biogeochemical behaviors and processes of various organic and inorganic compounds around oxic-anoxic interface. Nitrite and nitrate rapidly decreased below the pycnocline where about $1{\times}10^8$ tons of hypoxic bottom water exist. In this bottom layer, ammonium ranged from 75 to 360 ${\mu}M$ mainly resulting from deamination of dissolved organic nitrogen and ammonification of precipitated organic particles. Despite large amounts of surface water discharge and dilution by outer seawater inflow about $3{\times}10^8$ tons from April to August, 1996, bottom layer did not show any improvement of water quality and maintained highly reduced environment. The main reason seems to be imbalance between ineffectiveness of dilution due to shallow depth and large surface area, overloaded POC influx from the eutrophicated surface biological activity, and poor replenishment of oxygen in this artificial lake system. Therefore, as long as current salinity dependent two-layered system maintains with its physical limitations, any improvement of water quality cannot be foreseen in Lake Shihwa.
