  • High loading of printing and writing grades with fillers has many advantageous aspects in papermaking because it allows decreasing fiber use and reducing manufacturing cost. High loading technology, however, has some disadvantageous aspects as well. It decreases physical properties of papers, especially strength properties. The problem associated with high loading can be reduced by applying surface sizing starch solution onto paper surface. It is important to control the penetration of the surface sizing starch solution into paper web to obtain the desired property improvement. In this study, the effect of the addition of two polymers into starch solution on paper properties has been examined. PVOH and polyDADMAC were used as polymeric additives for surface sizing with oxidized starch. Viscosity of starch solutions and surface roughness of dried starch films on glass slides showed that some interactions between polymeric additives and oxidized starch have been occurred and the most extensive interaction with starch solution was obtained with high molecular weight polyDADMAC. Low molecular weight PVOH was most effective in improving folding endurance and internal bond strength. On the other hand, polymer addition showed no effect on surface strength of paper. This indicates that not the level of starch holdout but the bonding strength of starch itself has predominant influence on surface strength of paper.

  • Objectives: The aim of this investigation was to give insights into the impact of carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks on the likely capacity of enamel surface dissolution and the influence of human saliva exposure as a biological protective factor. Materials and Methods: The pH, titratable acidity (TA) to pH 7.0, and buffer capacity (${\beta}$) of common beverages ingested by patients under physical activity were analyzed. Then, we randomly distributed 50 specimens of human enamel into 5 groups. Processed and natural coconut water served as controls for testing three carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks. In all specimens, we measured surface microhardness (Knoop hardness numbers) and enamel loss (profilometry, ${\mu}m$) for baseline and after simulated intake cycling exposure model. We also prepared areas of specimens to be exposed to human saliva overnight prior to the simulated intake cycling exposure. The cycles were performed by alternated immersions in beverages and artificial saliva. ANOVA two-way and Tukey HDS tests were used. Results: The range of pH, TA, and ${\beta}$ were 2.85 - 4.81, 8.33 - 46.66 mM/L and 3.48 - $10.25mM/L{\times}pH$, respectively. The highest capacity of enamel surface dissolution was found for commercially available sports drinks for all variables. Single time human saliva exposure failed to significantly promote protective effect for the acidic attack of beverages. Conclusions: In this study, carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks usually consumed during endurance training may have a greater capacity of dissolution of enamel surface depending on their physicochemical proprieties associated with pH and titratable acidity.

  • Ginsenoside Rgl (Rgl), the pharmacologically active constituent of ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer), has a variety of biological activities. The present study was undertaken to evaluate a possibility of Rgl whether it can be used in treatment or prevention of stress disorders. Animals were stressed by immobilization for 2 hours or electroshocks for 20 minutes. The normal group was not exposed to any stress. Rgl was subcutaneously injected as dosages of 5 and 10 mg/kg and red ginseng (RG) was orally administered 200 mg/kg as the positive control. Animals were given supplements for 5 days without stress, and then were given supplements for 5 days with stress. We recorded stress-related behavioral changes of experimental animals using the Etho-vision system. Weight of adrenal gland and levels of corticosterone in plasma were measured and stress related behaviors (smelling, grooming, face washing, rearing) were observed. Rgl didn't make significant behavioral changes in total open field and elevated plus maze test. Rgl did not influence on behavioral changes induced by electroshock stress. Whereas, 10 mg/kg of Rgl alleviated the increment of the freezing and face washing time and the decrement of the smelling and rearing time induced by restraint stress. The administration of Rgl 10 mg/kg has significantly increased the endurance time on rotating rod and swimming pool tests compared to the control group. These results indicate that Rgl can alleviate the damage induced by physical stress. This result suggests that Rgl may bea new candidate for treating stress related disorder.

  • Acanthopanax Koreanum stem (AK) has been used in Korea as a tonic and sedative as well as a drug with ginseng like activities. The purpose of our present study was to investigate the effects of AK extract (AKE) and Eleutheroside E, major component of AKE on an exacerbated immune function through utilization of protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) diet by using forced swimming test (FST). The immobility time were significantly decreased in the AKE or Eleutheroside E-administrated group compared with the control group on the FST (P < 0.05). The level of blood parameters were not changed significantly. PEM-induced weight loss of mice was reduced by oral administration of 500 mg/kg AKE. AKE oral administration improved the nutritional status such as the food efficiency ratio and the adrenal gland weight. AKE treatment significantly increased the production of interferon (IFN)-$\gamma$ compared with unstimulated splenocytes but not interleukin (IL)-4. Eleutheroside E also significantly increased the IFN-$\gamma$ production but not IL-2 and IL-4 in T cell line, MOLT-4 cells. These results suggest that AKE and Eleutheroside E may influence to immune-enhancing through increasing the physical endurance capacity and immune cell activation.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of non-pharmacologic interventions in chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). Methods: PubMed, Cochrane Library CENTRAL, EMBASE, CINAHL, and several Korean databases (Until August 2017) were searched. The main search strategy combined terms for peripheral neuropathy and presence of neoplasms. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane's Risk of Bias tool for randomized studies and the Risk of Bias Assessment tool for non-randomized studies. To estimate the effect size, a meta-analysis of the studies was performed using the Rev Man 5.3 program of the Cochrane Library random-effects models were used in the analyses. Results: Twenty-two studies with a total of 954 participants met the inclusion criteria. Of the 22 studies, 12 were used to estimate the effect size of the non-pharmacologic interventions. The non-pharmacologic interventions used in patients with CIPN were exercise, acupuncture, massage, and foot bath. The acupuncture significantly reduced CIPN symptoms and signs (d=-0.71) and CIPN pain (d=-0.73) (p<.001). Massage and foot bath were also effective in reducing CIPN symptoms (d=-0.68; 95% CI=-1.05, -0.30; p<.001; $I^2=19%$).Exercises were effective in improving muscle strength and endurance(d=-0.55) and quality of life (d=-2.96), but they were not significantly effective in improving CIPN. Conclusion: Although these results provide little evidence of the effectiveness of acupuncture, massage, and foot bath in the treatment of CIPN, they suggest that these interventions can reduce CIPN symptoms in patients with cancer. However, the findings of this study should be interpreted with caution as there is a relative lack of data in this field, and additional well-designed studies are needed. • Among the feffoelectric thin films that have been widely investigated for ferroelectric random access memory (FRAM) applications, SrBi$_2$Ta$_2$$O_{9}$ thin film is appropriate to memory capacitor materials for its excellent fatigue endurance. However, very few studies on etch properties of SBT thin film have been reported although dry etching is an area that demands a great deal of attention in the very large scale integrations. In this study, the a SrBi$_2$Ta$_2$$O_{9}$ thin films were etched by using magnetically enhanced inductively coupled Ar/CHF$_3$ plasma. Etch properties, such as etch rate, selectivity, and etched profile, were measured according to gas mixing ratio of CHF$_3$(Ar$_{7}$+CHF$_3$) and the other process conditions were fixed at RF power of 600 W, dc bias voltage of 150 V, chamber pressure of 10 mTorr. Maximum etch rate of SBT thin films was 1750 A77in, under CHF$_3$(Ar+CHF$_3$) of 0.1. The selectivities of SBT to Pt and PR were 1.35 and 0.94 respectively. The chemical reaction of etched surface were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The Sr and Ta atoms of SBT film react with fluorine and then Sr-F and Ta-F were removed by the physical sputtering of Ar ion. The surface of etched SBT film with CHF$_3$(Ar+CHF$_3$) of 0.1 was analyzed by secondary ion mass spectrometer (SIMS). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used for examination of etched profile of SBT film under CHF$_3$(Ar+CHF$_3$) of 0.1 was about 85˚.85˚.˚.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the potential application of the separated refining system in the papermaking process using cotton pulps. The cotton staple and linter fibers were expected to show a great difference in their refining responses due to their morphological and physical differences. Experiments were conducted to examine the differences in flocculation tendency, CED viscosity, fiber length, handsheet properties and the SEM surface images between staple and linter fibers at a given refining degree. These fibers were also subjected to separated refining in a laboratory-scale beater and in a mill-scale refiner as well. The effect of the separated refining on the refining rates and papermaking properties were evaluated. Results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Fiber flocculation tendency of cotton staple was estimated to be significantly greater than that of linter fibers; 2. The staple fibers showed higher cellulose DP, longer fiber length and higher sheet strength at a given refining degree compared to linter fibers, but remarkably slower refining rate was observed; 3. The separated refining system exhibited a significant increase in sheet strengths, especiauy in folding endurance, with an increase in the fibrillation on the surface of staple fibers, but slightly lower or comparable fiber length after refining to the mixed refining system; 4. Similar results were also obtained from the machine trial in which about 7-8% energy saving effects were achived in the separated refining system. On the basis of the results observed in this study, it was concluded that a significant increase in paper strength and a substantial reduction in refining energy consumption could be achieved using the separated refining system for the cotton staple and linter fiber stock refining.

  • The aim of this was to evaluate the effects of Rhus Verniciflua Stoke (RVS) extract powder on the endurance capacity for the forced swimming mice. Thirty mice were divided into 3 groups including negative control, 250 (RVS-250) and 500 (RVS-500) mg/kg RVS extract powder groups for 4-times swimming exercises. The swimming times to exhaustion in RVS-250 and RVS-500 mice were prolonged 1.6- and 2.0-fold at 4 weeks compared with negative control mice, respectively. Blood biochemical parameters for AST, ALT, T-CHO and TG were not significantly different between RVS fed or negative control mice. However, blood concentration of creatinine was significantly increased in RVS-250 mice, but not in RVS-500 mice. During the longer swimming exercise in RVS group, blood glucose and lactate levels were significantly decreased, but free fatty acid not changed. And also LDH levels were significantly decreased in RVS groups compared to negative control mice. Hepatic lipid peroxidation was not affected by RVS, but SOD and catalase activity were significantly increased in RVS groups. Interestingly, the levels of testosterone and free testosterone were significantly increased in RVS groups before swimming exercise, but they were not significantly changed among groups after swimming exercise. The present results suggest that RVS extract powders may enhance swimming exercise performance by recovering the exercise-fatigue via reduction of blood LDH activity and by burning blood glucose as an energy source. These results imply that RVS-produced testosterone may act as an energy buster to enhance physical activity.
