The Effects of Mountain Climbing Exercise on Physical Fitness Improvement of Age 60's (등산이 60대 노인의 체력향상에 미치는 효과)

  • To determine the effects of exercise program which is developed to advanced the physical fitness of the old aged, mountain climbing exercise for 12 weeks was performed to the agee 60's. Studied subjects consisted with 50 na: and 50 women, aged 60's, who resided in Taejon city and had not done regular exercise. Body fat, muscle strength, body flexibility and cardiovascular endurance of them were calculated and compared before and after mountain climbing exercise for 12 weeks from September 1, 1996. Following results were obtained therefrom; Body fat reduced $2.57\%$ in made, and $2.68\%$ in female, but muscle strength was improved 3.07kg in made and 2.43kg in female. Body flexibility, tested by bend forward, was improved 2.17cm in made, and 2.32cm in female. Cardiovascular endurance, tested by 1,200m running time, was reduced 18.2 seconds in made and 15.5seconds in female. For the conclusion, there showed advancement of physical fitness after the 12 weeks mountain climbing exercise.

The effects of long term endurance or resistance exercise training on anabolic and catabolic pathway in skeletal muscle of middle-aged rats (장기간의 지구성 운동 또는 저항성 운동이 중년 흰쥐의 골격근 내 단백질 동화 및 이화기전에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of long-term endurance exercise or resistance exercise training on muscle anabolic/catabolic pathway. 50wks-old male Wistar rats(n=30) were randomly assigned for 3 groups (sedentary, endurance exercise, resistance exercise group). After 12-week of training, plantaris muscles were dissect to measure protein level. Akt/mTOR signal-related proteins were significantly increased only after resistance exercise training, but catabolic signal-related proteins, FoxO1 and MuRF1, were significantly decreased after resistance and endurance exercise training. After endurance exercise training, AMPK and PGC-1α protein levels were significantly increased. Therefore, the endurance exercise training has been shown to affect the protein balance of aging muscle through inhibition of muscle protein catabolism. The present results suggest the possibility that not only resistance exercise but also endurance exercise will be affectable to keep or increase muscle volume and capacity of middle-aged people.

Comparison of Motor Fitness of Cerebral Palsy Chidren with normal throug Phyisical Fitness Diagnosis Evaluation (체력진단 평가를 통한 뇌성마비 아동과 정상아동의 운동능력 비교연구)

  • The aim of this study is to compared the cerebral palsy children with normal children in the exercise and cardio vascular ability after this study as the fundamental data fer mating programs for the cerebral palsy children. The test of this study is about twenty girls, the control group of the normal children(n=10) and the experiment group of cerebral palsy children(n=10). They were studied in four aspects which were the anthropometry, the medical check in the rest, the physical fitness or exercise roads test and the change of the target heart rate during exercise. The result were as follows : 1. The characteristic of the physical type : The control group is higher than the experiment group in the standing height and the body weight but their's little difference between them (p<0.05). The control group is lower than the experiment group in the body fat. 2. The characteristic of the medical check in the rest : The control group is higher than the experiment group in the vital capacity and flood expiratoryvolume one second. The control group is higher that the experiment group in the blood pressure of systolic and Diastolic. There's little difference between them(p<0.01). The control is lower than the experiment group in the heart pulse rate. There's little difference between them(p<0.005). 3. The characteristic of basic physical strength evaluation : The experiment group is the lowest dynamic muscular endurance, balance, agility and endurance which need to move the body with weight. The control group is much higher than the experiment group in the flexibility and muscle strength(Back strength). There's no difference between them(p<0.05). 4. The characteristics of the exercise stress last : The control group is higher than the experiment group in the endurance, the maximum of oxygen intake, endurance level and the out take of calory. There's little difference between them(p<0.01). 5. The characteristic of the change of the target heart rate during exercise : The control group is lower than the experiment group exchange of target heart rate, There's no difference them.

The Influence Factor Analysis of Spinal Cord Independence Measure(SCIM) on Walking in Spinal Cord Injury (척수손상환자의 보행에 영향을 주는 SCIM 요인 분석)

  • This study aims to the influenced factor analysis of spinal cord independence measure(SCIM), on walking velocity, walking endurance, time up & go(TUG), and subject characteristics. The subject of this study were 12 persons with incomplete spinal cord injury(ASIA C, D). All subject ambulatory with or without an assistive device. All participants were assessed on SCIM(score), walking velocity(m/s), walking endurance(m) and TUG(s). The data were analyzed using independent t-test and stepwise multiple regression. The results revealed that no statistical difference was noted in subject characteristics among SCIM, walking velocity, walking endurance, TUG(p>0.5). The independence score, breathing-sphincter control and ambulation were important factors in TUG(31.4%). The results suggest that SCIM may be an inappropriate assessment tool to predict gait ability of patient with incomplete spinal cord injury. Further study about gait speed, gait endurance and TUG by change of SCIM is needed using to patient of incomplete spinal cord injury.

Characterizing of Four Obesity Types in Obese Women Based on the Questionnaire of Diseases and Physical Tests (여성 비만의 유발유형별 일반 증상과 검사 특성 연구)

  • Objectives : To characterize four types of obesity and to effectively improve the treatment of obesity through Oriental medicine Methods : At 00 Oriental Medical Center, 203 female subjects who intented to lose weight were requested to complete a questionnaire. These participants were also given physical tests. The Questionnaire consisted of questions both about general life style and obesity in oriental medicine framework. The physical tests were blood tests, a body composition via Inbody 2.0, and physical strength tests. One-way analysis of variance was done to compare the means of items and physical tests between four types of obesity. Duncan was used by post hoc test. Results : 1. Significant differences between obesity type III and obesity type IV in ever tried to lose weight, childhood obesity and excercise times were observed in the questionnaire of general life style(p<0.05). 2. Ducan test showed significant differences between four obesity types in diseases (p<0.05). 3. Significant differences between four obesity types in height, % body fat muscular endurance, soft lean mass, fat mass, Trigliceride, Total cholesterol and ${\gamma}-GTP$ were observed (p<0.05). Conclusions : Further clinical research is necessary in the four types of obesity explored. The diagnosis and treatment based on these types should be further studied.

The Effect of 3D NEWTON Exercise on Lumbar Strength and Endurance (3D NEWTON 운동과 짐볼 운동이 요부 근력 및 근지구력에 미치는 영향)

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to verify the most effective spinal stabilization exercise program by comparing the activities of muscles contributing to spinal stabilization during 2 types of exercises using 3-D NEWTON and a Gym-ball. Methods: We divided sixteen healthy students to two groups in D city were recruited and each subjects performed two type of exercise. Exercise 1 was performed 3-D NEWTON spinal stabilization training during 4 weeks (n=8). Exercise 2 was performed special training program that use a Gym-ball during 4 weeks (n=8). Results: The group of 3-D NEWTON applying lumbar stabilization kinetic program was increased 18.8s after training. Conclusions: It was revealed the statically significant difference between 3-D NEWTON and Gym-ball lumbar stabilization exercise groups. Therefore it has been turned out that 3-D NEWTON and Gym-ball lumbar stabilization exercise has an effect on the abdominis and trunk muscle strengthening and balance.

  • This study was conducted on the assumption that bone age would be more effective when it comes to physique and physical fitness assessment for adolescents, and the purpose of this study was to identify the differences in physique and physical fitness for students in their adolescence through bone age and chronological age in order to contribute to the well-balanced physique and physical fitness development in adolescents and the health improvement in students. Total 874 adolescents(483 males, 391 females) aged 11~16 were selected as subjects out of the total population of 1100 adolescents aged 6~16 based on the PAPS(Physical Activity Promotion System) and age standards of the TW3 method; and skeletal maturation, which symbolize the indicators of biological maturation, were evaluated by using the TW3(Tanner-Whitehouse 3) method after hand-wrist radiographs, and birth date was used for chronological age. A stadiometer and InBody 270 (Biospace, Korea) were used to measure 2 components in physique. A total of 7 components in physical fitness, which included muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, power, cardiovascular endurance, balance, agility, were measured as well. A independent samples t-test was conducted for data processing using SPSS 25.0, and the significance level was set at p< .05. The study results are as follows. First, bone age and chronological age used for physique comparison in males aged 11 and 12, height and weight showed significant difference; in males aged 13, weight showed signicant difference. Weight and height in females aged 11, and height in females aged 12 showed significant difference. Second, bone age and chronological age used for physical fitness comparison in males aged 11, muscular strength, power, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance showed significant difference; in males aged 12, muscular strength. power, cardiovascular endurance; in males aged 13, flexibility showed significant difference. Muscular strength, power, flexibility, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance in females aged 11, and flexibility in females aged 14 showed significant difference. As a result, this study concluded that in a period of rapid skeletal growth, evaluating physique and physical fitness based on bone age is more accurate than evaluating based on chronological age.

Development of Physical Fitness Standard Indicators According to the Bone Age in Youth (유소년의 골연령에 따른 체력 표준지표 개발)

  • This study aims to evaluate physical fitness according to the bone age of youth, and ultimately provide basic data for balanced development of youth through physical fitness standard indicators according to the bone age. A total of 730 youth aged 11 to 13 years in bone age and 11 to 13 years in chronological age were selected as subjects; and after taking X-ray films to calculate the bone age, they were evaluated by using the TW3 method. A total of 2 components in physique, which were stature and weight, were measured using a stadiometer(Hanebio, Korea, 2021) and Inbody 270(Biospace, Korea, 2019). A total of 7 components in physical fitness were measured as well, which included muscular strength (Hand Grip Strength), balance (Bass Stick Test), agility (Plate Tapping), power (Standing Long Jump), flexibility (Sit&Reach), muscular endurance (Sit-Up), and cardiovascular endurance (Shuttle Run). Descriptive statistics and independent t-test were conducted for data processing using the SPSS PC/Program(Version 26.0), and it was considered significant at the level of p< .05. The results of this study may be summarized as follow. First, the result of comparing the bone age and the chronological age of 11 to 13 years old in physical fitness, males showed significant difference in muscular strength, power, muscular endurance, and cardiovasular endurance. In females, muscular strength, balance, agility, power, flexibility, muscular endurance, and cardiovascular endurance showed significant difference. Second, physical fitness standard indicators were presented for each gender and age (11-13 years old) of youth according to the bone age; and based on this, physical fitness standard indicators, which are basic data for physical fitness evaluation according to the bone age of youth, were presented.

An Effect of Muscle Strength Training Program on Muscle Strength, Muscle Endurance, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living and Quality of Life in the Institutionalized Elderly (노인의 근력강화운동이 일상생활기능 및 삶의 질에 미치는 효과)

  • An Effect of Muscle Strength Training Program on Muscle Strength, Muscle Endurance, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living and Quality of Life in the Institutionalized Elderly Recent statistics shows that the aged are the fastest growing segment of our population by increasing life span. The age group of over 60 shows multiple health problems and the most serious handicapping problem of these. are related to the changes in muscular skeletal system. With aging, people lose. their muscle mass and muscle strength resulting from biological changes and physical inactivity. Studies documented a 30-50% loss of muscle mass in an advanced age and thus, ordinary life activities can be seriously affected due to weakened muscle strength. Preservation of muscle strength of lower limb is especially important in the aged. Since it is readily affected from reduced physical activity in old age, sometimes to the detriment of moving or walking. So muscle strength exercise program designed for the elderly to improve leg muscle strength and leg muscle endurance. The research design used was nonequivalent control group pretest - protest design. The purposes of this study were to test the effect of muscle strength exercise program utilizing Leg Press on muscle strength, muscle endurance, instrumental activities of daily living(IADL), cognitive perceptual variables and quality of life. Forty nine subjects participating in this study consisted of twenty four male and twenty five female. Twenty four experimental group subjects were selected from C-institution in Chung Buk province, and twenty five control group subjects were selected from O-institution in Chung Nam province. The mean age of subjects was 72.8 years. Muscle strength training program utilizing Leg Press for the experimental group was carried out three times a week for 9 weeks. The data was collected from August, 1993 to October, 1993. Data were analyzed with $X^2-test$, t-test, ANCOVA test, Kruskal Wallis 1-Way ANOVA test using SPSS PC program. Results were obtained as follows : 1) The experimental group showed significantly higher scores on muscle strength (leg lift strength, back lift strength and grip strength) and muscle endurance than control group after the experiment $\ulcorner$F=52.35(p=.001), F=54.07(p=.001), F=6.97(p=.011), F=18.17(p=.001)$\lrcorner$ 2) Experimental group were significantly higher scores on IADL than control group(F=7.51, p=.009). 3) Experimental group showed significantly higher scores on economical state and self esteem aspects of the quality of life scale than control group $\ulcorner$F=10.59(p=.002), F=6.97(p=.011)$\lrcorner$. But there were no differences in emotional state, physical and functional state and relationship with reatives in the quality of life between groups. 4) Scores on IADL showed a significant difference with the level of muscle strength and muscle endurance $\ulcornerx^2=7.73(p=.025),\;x^2=8.86\;(p=.011)\lrcorner$ 5) Scores on self esteem and physical and functional state aspects of the quality of life scale showed a significant difference with the level of IADL $\ulcornerx^2=11.39(p=.003),\;x^2=9.02(p=.011)\lrcorner$. 6) Scores of experimental group after the experiment in cognitive perceptual variables (perceived benefit on exercise, perceived health status, self efficacy, emotion on exercise) were significantly higher than those of control group $\ulcorner$F=32.09(p=.001), F=5.07(p=.029), F=20.63 (p=.001), F=30.38(p=.001)$\lrcorner$. As a result of this study, the effect of strength training exercise program with Leg. Press had improved muscle strength, muscle endurance, IADL, and the perception of self esteem, physical and funtional state, and economical state. Thus strength training program could be beneficially applied for the prevention of disablity and promotion of health and wellbeing in the aged easily and safely. The subjects in the experimental group have maintained their exercises till six months after the cessation of the experiment. This seem to illustrate that changes in cognitive perceptual variables and the improvement in health status have reinforced motivation for the continuation of voluntary exercises. A further study is necessary to determine the factors affecting maintainance of muscle strength exercise and to assess the effect of weight training program on bone density.

Correlation between BMI and Physical Fitness of College Women in Seoul

  • This study investigated the correlation of the physical measurements and the basic physical fitness of 158 female students in the city of Seoul. The average age of the subjects was 22.0 ${\pm}$ 0.13 years old, the average height was 160.9 ${\pm}$ 0.7cm and the average weight was 53.4 ${\pm}$ 0.6kg. The mean BMI (Body Mass Index) was 20.7 ${\pm}$ 0.2kg/㎡. The average muscle mass was 36.5 ${\pm}$ 0.3 and the average body fat percentage was 28.0 ${\pm}$ 0.4%. The basic fitness levels of the subjects were measured based on the evaluation chart of the Korea Health and Science Research Institution (1994). The subjects were divided into 3 groups based on BMI(Group I : BMI < 20, Group II : 20 $\leq$ BMI < 25, Group III BMI $\geq$ 25) and the correlation between BMI and physical fitness was assessed. 1) The muscle strength of the subjects was measured by their grip strength, among other tests. Groups 1 and 2 were evaluated as “su” (level 1) and group 3 was “woo” (level 2). 2) Endurance 1 was tested by push-ups, and while groups 1 and 2 were evaluated as “su” (level 1), group 3 was “ga” (level 5). This result did not suggest any significant relevance among the subjects. 3) Endurance 2 was tested by sit-ups : groups 1 and 2 were evaluated as “mi” (level 3) and group 3 as “yang” (level 4). Group 2 and group 3 showed a significant difference. 4) Instant power was tested by standing high jumps, and although there was a significant difference between group 1 and group 3, all of the subjects were evaluated as “ga” (level 5). 5) Flexibility was measured by how far the subjects could bend forward. There was no significant relevance between the groups and they were all respectively evaluated as “woo” (level 2). 6) Agility was tested with side-steps and all the subjects showed poor agility as “yang” (level 4). 7) Heart and lung endurance was tested by the step test, calculating the maximum oxygen intake with the Physical Energy Index (PEI) and using the numbers according to the evaluation chart. Group 1 was evaluated as “mi” (level 3) and groups 2 and 3 were “woo” (level 2). From these results, we could see the group III (obese group) had a tendency of lower levels in all the variables related to body fitness They showed significantly lower endurance assessed with time for sit-ups and instant power by the standing high jumps.
