  • Background: Compared to healthy people, patients with chronic lower back pain have reduced balance abilities which may cause proprioception problems, patients with chronic lower back pain avoid physical activities due to pain, and reduced activity levels lead to muscle weakening, which can further exacerbate pain. Recently, there have been many studies on the use of sensory stimulation; and among these studies, interventions that use vibrational stimulation have shown functional improvements in the patients. Objects: This study examined the effects of a stabilization exercise with vibration stimulation on the balance ability and disability in patients with chronic back pain. Methods: The subjects of the study were 30 persons who were randomly assigned to the experimental group and the control group, with 15 subjects in each. The subjects were evaluated before and after intervention via a balance ability test, the Korean Oswestry disability index (KODI) test, a pain test, and a proprioceptive sensory test. Both groups received general physical therapy. The experimental group performed the stabilization exercise with vibration stimulation, and the control group performed a general stabilization exercise, three times a week for six weeks. Results: After the intervention, both groups showed significant improvements in the balance ability test, the KODI test, the pain test, and the proprioceptive sensory test. The experimental group showed statistically significant, higher improvements than the control group in the balance ability test, the KODI test, and the proprioceptive sensory test. Conclusions: The stabilization exercise with vibration stimulation for patients with chronic back pain has been reported to provide greater functional improvements than the conventional intervention method. Therefore, the stabilization exercise in a vibration stimulation environment could be a useful intervention for patients with chronic back pain.

  • Background: Physical exercise is known to cause significant joint changes. Thus, monitoring joint behavior of athletic horses is essential in early disorders recognition, allowing the proper management. Objectives: The aims of this study were to determine the morphological patterns, physical examination characteristics and ultrasound findings of show jumping horses in training and to establish a score-based examination model for physical and ultrasound follow-ups of metacarpophalangeal joint changes in these animals. Methods: A total of 52 metacarpophalangeal joints from 26 horses who were initially in the taming stage were evaluated, and the horses' athletic progression was monitored. The horses were evaluated by a physical examination and by B-mode and Doppler-mode ultrasound examinations, starting at time zero (T0), which occurred concomitantly with the beginning of training, and every 3 months thereafter for a follow-up period of 18 months. Results: The standardized examination model revealed an increase in the maximum joint flexion angles and higher scores on the physical and ultrasound examinations after scoring was performed by predefined assessment tools, especially between 3 and 6 months of evaluation, which was immediately after the horses started more intense training. The lameness score and the ultrasound examination score were slightly higher at the end of the study. Conclusions: The observed results were probably caused by the implementation of a training regimen and joint adaptation to physical conditioning. The joints most likely undergo a pre-osteoarthritic period due to work overload, which can manifest in a consistent or adaptive manner, as observed during this study. Thus, continuous monitoring of young athlete horses by physical and ultrasound examinations that can be scored is essential.

  • TRIZ was developed and refined in the Soviet Union between 1946 and 1985 by Genrich Altshuller. Its primary application has been for solving inventive problems in the areas of engineering. But, recently the elements of TRIZ began to be applied non-technical areas by Darrell Mann. TRIZ theroy was brought into South Korea in 1995 and it is used by the LG, SAMSUNG, POSCO. TRIZ is simply not the tool for technical problem solving, covering many areas of comprehensive approach is being recognized. TRIZ is a methodology for defining problem, finding root cause through RCA(Root cause analysis), defining technical contradiction and physical contradiction. TRIZ overcomes contradiction and purses problem solving method through innovation. TRIZ is a problem solving method in this study using the principles of non-technical fields applied to the improvement of the logistics area study. The method to overcome contradiction is 40 principles. It is possible to generate idea by using 40 principles. This study was applied to logistics field of non-technical area by using TRIZ principle.

  • School facilities are important facilities in neighboring residential areas and occupy important physical and social positions. Not using school facility occur to an obstacle to the environment of the local residents and cause a great waste of local land resources, due to its size and location. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a system to identify the cause of the unsold school facility site and to prevent it. On the other hand, it is necessary to make quick use of the unemployed school facility site through conversion of usage.

  • Rectus abdominis syndrome is the abdominal pain which occurs in the distribution of the medial or lateral cutaneous branch of the 7~12th intercostal nerves. It is frequently cause that results in unnecessary pain and expense to patient. The physical examination is difficult because of severe abdominal pain. We must have attention to the possibility that patients with abdominal pain, in whom no intra- abdominal cause is founded, may suffer from this presumed nerve entrapment syndrome. If we can find the cause of pain in the abdominal rectus muscle, no evaluation and surgery are required and therapy can be simple.

  • The medical fitness of pilots is part of the civil aviation safety scenery. This study aimed to analyze the health problems occurring among Korean commercial pilots. Three data sources were used to identify the health problems: 7,574 aviation medical examination data, 5,400 sick leaves and 39 cases of a decrease in medical fitness during flight duty period and layover of Korean commercial pilots who have been working for K airline from Jan. 1, 2016 to Dec. 31, 2018. This study was retrospectively analyzed using SPSS 22 statistical program. Waiver of medical certificates was an average 11.9% of total issuance for 3 years, with a denial of 0.1%. The leading cause of denial of medical certificates was predominantly of cardiovascular cause (55.6%). Mild respiratory and digestive disease accounted for 82% of total sick prevalence and 68% of total sick days. The psychiatric and cardiovascular disease were ranked high according to the number of days lost per case. The most common cause of decrease in medical fitness during flight duty period was acute abdominal pain (36.4%) and musculoskeletal disorder (40%) when staying abroad. Aeromedical emphasis on minimizing cardiovascular risk remains appropriate. Major pilot health problems identified in this study should be considered in establishing pilot health promotion programs for aviation safety.

  • The role of domain-specific causal mechanism information and domain-general conditional probability in young children's causal reasoning on physics and psychology was investigated with the participation of 121 3-year-olds and 121 4-year-olds recruited from seven child care centers in Seoul, Kyonggi Province, and Busan. Children watched moving pictures on physical and psychological phenomena, and were asked to choose an appropriate cause and justify their choice. Results showed that young children's causal reasoning differed depending on domain-specific mechanism. In addition, their causal reasoning on physics and psychology differed by the developmental level of causal mechanism. The interaction of domain-specific mechanism and domain-general conditional probability influenced children's causal reasoning : evident conditional probability between domain-appropriate cause and effect helped children make more inferences based on domain-specific causal mechanism.

  • Cerebral infarction without cerebravascular malformation in childhood is very uncommon. One case of cerebral infarction without cerebravascular malformation in childhood, with symptoms similar to those of an adult, was encountered. This female patient had no cerebravascular malformation and was just ten years-old. She was treated with herb medicine, acupunture treatment and physical treatment. After treatment she recovered from stroke symptoms but the primary cause of stroke was not revealed. Follow-up research is needed to determine the cause of stroke. Results suggest that oriental medical treatment had beneficial effects in treatment of cerebral infarction in this child.

  • A growing number of people are concerned about their sleep. There are many people with chronic sleep disorders. As there are various causes in a disease, proper treatment according to each cause is necessary for a more effective treatment. In general, insomnia is classified into five categories of physical, physiological, psychological, psychiatric and pharmacological aspects. Sedative-hypnotics including benzodiazepine and non-benzodiazepine have widely been used in chronic insomniacs. However, most hypnotics including non-benzodiazepine cause some of dependence, tolerance, impaired daytime function and rebound insomnia. Therefore, we are looking forward to proposing an effective oriental treatment for insomnia. A 71-year-old male who had suffered from cerebral infarction was admitted to our department for oriental treatment of stroke and insomnia. Initial treatment modalities with administration of paroxetine were not effective. However administration of oriental medicine' Gochimmuwoo-san(Gaozhenwuyou-san)' achieved a desirable effect.
