In order to increase the shelf-life of Phyllostachys pubescens sap heating conditions were investigated. To evaluate the quality changes of Phyllostachys pubescens sap before and after heating at $70^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, pH, total microbial number and sensory characteristics were measured during storage periods at $2^{\circ}C$. During 10 days, the quality and sensory characteristics of Phyllostachys pubescens sap were maintained.
To evaluate the antioxidative effect of maengjong-juk (Phyllostachys pubescens) extract coated rice in vivo system, maengjong-juk extract coated rice diets were fed to C57BL/6 mice for 16 weeks. Plasma total antioxidative capacity, hepatic lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, activities of antioxidative enzymes and total glutathione content were measured. Plasma total antioxidative capacity was elevated significantly in maengjong-juk extract diets supplemented group in a dose dependant manner. Hepatic TBARS contents were significantly decreased in maengjong-juk extract diets supplemented group compared to high cholesterol group. Maengjong-juk extract coated rice diets suppressed the protein oxidation significantly in liver. Activities of hepatic antioxidative enzymes such as total SOD, CuㆍZn-SOD, Mn-SOD, GSH-Px and catalase activities of maengjong-juk extract coated rice diets were significantly higher than those of high cholesterol diet. Total hepatic glutathione content was significantly increased by maengjong-juk extract coated rice diets administration. According to this study, numerous antioxidative materials and phytochemicals containing in maengjong-juk extracts appear to protect antioxidative systems in C57BL/6 mice fed bamboo extract coated rice diet. Phyllostachys pubescens (Maengiong-Juk), a kind of the bamboo, was reported to have many beneficial pharmacological actions. in this study, of using 70% ethanol extract of Phyllostachys pubescens we investigated its efficacy on angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) and antioxidant enzyme activities. In addition, vasorelaxant effect was examined in rat aortic rings. The inhibitory effect of ACE activity by Phyllostachys pubescens extract (PPE) was dose-dependently increased by 61.42% at 10mg/ml. PPE relaxed the pre-contracted rat aortic rings with 10$^{-6}$M phenylephrine, showing about 88% at 4.0mg/ml. Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were given different concentrations of PPE mixed in the drinking water for 10 weeks. PPE did not show any difference with control group in blood pressure, body weight (BW) and food intake. However, it revealed the highest total antioxidative effect at dose of 1.0 g/100 g BW in plasma by TEAC assay. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) and protein carbonyl levels which are markers of tissue peroxidation, were significantly lowed at the same dosage. Furthermore, hepatic antioxidant enzymes such as total superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione reductase (GR) and catalase activities were also significantly increased by PPE (1.0 g/100 g BW). In conclusion, we suggest that PPE might have antihypertensive effect through increasing antioxidant activities.
In bamboo, the nutrient status of tissues and associated soil is an important indicator of nutrient uptake by various bamboo species. In this study, the nutrient concentrations of leaves, roots, and mineral soil at 0-10 cm depths were examined in three bamboo stands [Phyllostachys bambusoides S ieb. et Zucc, Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis Stapf ex. Rendle, and Phyllostachys pubescens (Mazel) Ohwi] at a broad regional scale in southern Korea. In the three bamboo species, species-specific differences were observed in the carbon (C) and calcium (Ca) concentrations of leaves and in the nitrogen (N) and magnesium (Mg) concentrations of roots. Ca concentrations in leaves were significantly higher in P. bambusoides (11.94 g Ca kg-1) than in P. pubescens (7.83 g Ca kg-1), whereas potassium (K) concentrations were lowest in P. bambusoides among the three bamboo species. N concentrations in the roots were significantly lower in P. pubescens (5.23 g N kg-1) than in P. nigra var. henonis (7.72 g N kg-1). In contrast to bamboo tissues, soil nutrients, such as total N, organic C, exchangeable Ca2+, and Mg2+, did not differ significantly among the bamboo species. These results suggest that species-specific practices will be required for nutrient management of bamboo stands because nutrient concentrations vary considerably in the tissues of the three studied species.
This study was carried out to determine the suitability of 3 months old bamboo species of Phyllostachys bambusoides S. et Z., Phyllostachys Pubescens Mazel and Phyllostachys nigra var henonis Stapf as raw materials for the manufacture of strandboard. Total of 108 strandboards were made using urea-formaldehyde resin content level of 12% and one percent of liquid wax emulsion. The strandboard consisted of three layers the top and the bottom layer of which were oriented to the same direction and weighted 25% of the strandboard each. The middle core layer weighed 50% of the board and was perpendicular to the outer top and bottom layers. Analysis was performed to determine the effect of strand lengths and Uowing years of 3 months, 2 years and 3 years on strandboard properties. The physical and mechanical properties of bamboo species and boards were measured and compared to the standard requirements of strandboards. The results are as follows; 1. The more the growing years the higher the density of bamboo. Top part of bamboo indicated higher density value than that of bottom part. 2. Bamboo showed higher static bending strength compared to the main wood species. Longer growing years of bamboo generally inclosed the static tending strength out there were no statistical significancies for Phyllostachys bmbusoides S. et Z. and Phyllostachys pubescens Mazel. 3. Strand length indicated no difference on density and moisture content of strandboard. 5 cm of strand length gave the best static bending strength and internal bonding strength. Bamboo strandboard exhibited lesser extents of thickness swelling than that of CSA standard. 4. 3 months old bamboo gave higher static bending strength of strandboard than those of 2 years and 3 years old bamboo. In case of Phyllostachys nigra var henonis Stapf, 3 months old bamboo indicated higher internal bonding strength than those of 2 years and 3years old bamboo. but in Phyllostachys bambusoides S. et Z., Phyllostachys pubescens Mazel, there were no difference among growing years. Growing years showed no different physical properties of bamboo strandboard.
Bamboo is one of the major biomass resources in the world. To obtain valuable information for effective use of bamboo resources in Korea, the anatomical characteristics of the commercial Korean bamboo species (Phyllostachys pubescens, Phyllostachys nigra, and Phyllostachys bambusoides) were analyzed. The structures in bamboo culm were observed by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Also the crystalline properties as relative crystallinity and crystallite width were measured by an X-ray diffraction method. The three Korean bamboo species had the vascular bundle type I with tylosoid in intercellular space. In the outer part of culm, vascular bundles showed denser spacing than inner part. The fiber length in outer part samples of the three bamboo species showed longer than inner part samples. Furthermore, the fiber length showed a significant difference between inner part and outer part in three bamboo species, showing the longest fiber length in Phyllostachys bambusoides. Phyllostachys pubescens showed the greatest diameter in vessel and parenchyma on cross section. Parenchyma cells in Phyllostachys pubescens and Phyllostachys bambusoides showed similar length and width in both radial and tangential sections. The relative crystallinity and crystallite width in outer part samples of the three bamboo species showed higher values than those in inner part samples, with the greatest values from Phyllostachys bambusoides.
The study aim was to derive a stem taper equation for Phyllostachys pubescens, a type of bamboo in South Korea, and to develop a stem volume table. To derive the stem taper equation, three stem taper models (Max & Burkhart, Kozak, and Lee) were used. Since bamboo stalks are hollow because of its woody characteristics, the outer and inner diameters of the tree were calculated, and connecting them enabled estimating the tree curves. The results of the three equations for estimating the outer and inner diameters led to selection of the Kozak model for determining the optimal stem taper because it had the highest fitness index and lowest error and bias. We used the Kozak model to estimate the diameter of Phyllostachys pubescens by stem height, which proved optimal, and drew the stem curve. After checking the residual degree in the stem taper equation, all residuals were distributed around "0", which proved the suitability of the equation. To calculate the stem volume of Phyllostachys pubescens, a rotating cube was created by rotating the stem curve with the outer diameter at 360°, and the volume was calculated by applying Smalian's method. The volume of Phyllostachys pubescens was calculated by deducting the inner diameter calculated volume from the outer diameter calculated volume. The volume of Phyllostachys pubescens was only 20~30% of the volume of Larix kaempferi, which is a general species. However, considering the current trees/ha of Phyllostachys pubescens and the amount of bamboo shoots generated every year, the individual tree volume was predicted to be small, but the volume/ha was not very different or perhaps more. The significance of this study is the stem taper equation and stem volume table for Phyllostachys pubescens developed for the first time in South Korea. The results are expected to be used as basic data for bamboo trading that is in increasing public and industrial demand and carbon absorption estimation.
Bamboo vinegar was prepared from China-grown bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) using simple kiln (400 - 500 $^{\circ}C$), and its physical properties and chemical components were investigated and compared to those of Korea-grown bamboo vinegar. The physical properties of China-grown bamboo vinegar were as follows: Baume specific gravity 4.5, organic acid 9.9%, pH 2.8, tar 3.1% and refractive index 13.1%, respectively. The main components of the bamboo vinegar were acetic acid, 1-hydroxyl-2-propanone, methanol, propionic acid, 1-hydroxyl-2- butanone. There was no significant difference between the components of Korea- and China-grown bamboo vinegars. Total organic materials in China-grown bamboo vinegar were 14.8%, and organic acids (acetic acid, formic acid, propionic acid, and butanoic acid) consisted of 9.0%. These acids corresponded to 61% of total organic materials. Neutral and phenolic compounds consisted of 4.5% and 0.8% of the bamboo vinegar, which were correspond to 6% and 31% of total organic materials, respectively. The physicochemical properties of traditional Chinese bamboo vinegar indicated that it was collected at low temperature and aged for a long time.
Intraspecific and interspecific isozyme variations and their relationship of 16 local populations in 3 species of Phyllostachys, that is, P. bambusoides, P. nigra var. henonis and P. pubescens were investigated by multi-variate analysis. Leaf isozymes of Phyllostachys such as 6-PGD (6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase), MDH (malate dehydrogenase), PGI (phosphoglucoisomerase), PRX (peroxidase), PGM (phosphoglutamase), IDH (isocitrate dehydrogenase) showed electrophoretic variations in the number of zymotypes (7, 6, 6, 9, 3 and 5, respectively). In the cluster analysis on the isozymic characteristics, 16 populations were classified into 3 species at the euclid genetic distance of 2.041. P. nigra var. henonis and P. bambusoides were clustered first at 2.813 and then P. pubescens at 3.001. So far, 3 local types of intraspecific ariation were found in P. nigra var. henonis and P. bambusoides.
The Phyllostachys pubescens planted in the Nambu forest Experiment was used for this study. The growth ages of the P. pubescens were 1, 2 and 3 years, respectively. The experiment was carried out every month in between June of 2001 and May of 2002. The p. pubescens were divided into upper, middle and lower parts according to the growing points. The static modulus of elascity($MOE_d$) and dynamic modulus of elascity($MOE_d$) were investigated for the physical and mechanical properties of the P. pubescens. The density, MOEs and $MOE_d$according to the growing points were highest in the upper part of the P. pubescens. Generally, density and MOEs and $MOE_d$ of the P pubescens for 3 years grows larger every month. However, moisture content, MOEs and $MOE_d$ of the P. pubescens for 1, 2 years had nothing to do with growth ages and felling time. In the case of the relationships between average MOEs and $MOE_d$ the correlation coefficient was 0.88 in between June of 2001 and May of 2002. Also, $MOE_d$ showed about 18.5% higher than MOEs. Generally, the equally expressed in research that was known that $MOE_d$ of wood is higher than MOEs of wood. Therefore, the $MOE_d$ using a resonance frequency mode is useful as a nondestructive evaluation(NDE) method for predicting the MOE of the P. pubescens.
