  • Organic photovoltaic effects were studied in a device structure of ITO/CuPc/Al and ITO/CuPc/$C_{60}$/BCP/Al. A thickness of CuPc layer was varied from 10 nm to 50 nm, we have obtained that the optimum CuPc layer thickness is around 40 nm from the analysis of the current density-voltage characteristics in CuPc single layer photovoltaic cell. From the thickness-dependent photovoltaic effects in CuPc/$C_{60}$ heterojunction devices, higher power conversion efficiency was obtained in ITO/20nm CuPc/40nm $C_{60}$/Al, which has a thickness ratio (CuPc/$C_{60}$) of 1:2 rather than 1:1 or 1:3. Light intensity on the device was measured by calibrated Si-photodiode and radiometer/photometer of International Light Inc(IL 14004).

  • The high power of a shingled photovoltaic module can be attributed to its low cell-to-module loss. The production of high power modules in limited area requires high efficiency solar cells. Shingled photovoltaic modules can be made by divided solar cells, which can be produced by the laser scribing process. After dividing the 21% PERC cell using laser scribing, the efficiency decreased by approximately 0.35%. However, there was no change in the efficiency of the solar cell having relatively lower efficiency, because the laser scribing process induce higher heat damages in solar cells with high efficiency. To prove this phenomena, the J0 (leakage current density) of each cell was analyzed. It was found that the J0 of 21% PERC increased about 17 times between full and divided solar cell. However, the J0 of 20.2% PERC increased only about 2.5 times between full and divided solar cell.

  • Solar energy is one of the renewable energy sources. It can respond to expanding energy demand. A solar cell module is designed to have a durability that can be developed over a long period of 25 years to be installed outdoors and perform like a stable power supply. We need Standard Test Condition (STC)-based power output data before and after testing to measure the power output of existing modules. The modules are shown to reduce power output by comparing data before and after outdoor experiments regardless of whether they are indoor or outdoor. It is easy to compare the power output quantities through the module simulator in the indoor. However, it takes a lot of testing time and costs to compare the power output on outdoor in the case of a high number of modules and distance from the module simulator. It can save time and costs if we can check the power output using the data in outdoor. We have used the long-term outdoor test to find the elements out that corresponds to the reductions in power output quantities. We have conducted research that matched the actual and the tests.

  • The photovoltaic (PV) system consists of solar cells, solar modules, inverters and peripherals. The related evaluation and certification are proceeding as standards published by the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) TC (Technical Committee) 82. In particular, PV module is a component that requires stable durability over 20 years, and evaluation in various external environments is very important. Currently, IEC 61215-based standards are being tested, but temperature, humidity, wind and solar radiation conditions are not considered in all areas. For this reason, various types of defects may occur depending on the installation area of the same photovoltaic module. In particular, the domestic climate (South Korea) is moderate. The various test methods proposed by IEC 61215 are appropriate, excessive, or insufficient, depending on environmental condition. In this paper, we analyze the climate data collection for one year to understand the vulnerability of this test method of PV modules. Through this, we propose a test method for PV module suitable for domestic climatic conditions and also propose a technical consideration for installation and design of PV system.

  • BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaic) supplemented the minimum area problem required when installing existing solar modules. However, in order to apply it to buildings, research was needed to increase the aesthetics of solar modules and use them as a design. Accordingly, modules with color applied to the entire surface of the photovoltaic module were being developed, but there was a disadvantage of low power. Therefore, by dividing and bonding the cell strips, it was possible to improve the output power by applying a shingled technology in which other divided cells overlap in a busbar region where light couldn't be received. Shingled technology was advantageous for color modules because the front busbar part that degrades aesthetics was removed. In this research, four color shingled solar modules (Green, Yellow, Blue, Gray) were manufactured and power degradation was analyzed by measuring transmittance and reflectance. Gray color had 80.83% transmittance, which was 31.31% higher than Yellow, resulting in a power difference of 4.45 W.

  • The pumping of electric power from photovoltaic (PV) farms is normally carried out using transformers, which require heavy mounting structures and are thus costly, less efficient, and bulky. Therefore, transformerless schemes are developed for the injection of power into the grid. Compared with the H4 inverter topology, the H6 topology is a better choice for pumping PV power into the grid because of the reduced common mode current. This paper presents how the perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) can be implemented in the H6 inverter topology along with the improved sinusoidal current injected to the grid at unity power factor with the average current mode control technique. On the basis of the P&O MPPT algorithm, a power reference for the present insolation level is first calculated. Maintaining this power reference and referring to the AC sine wave of bus bars, a sinusoidal current at unity power factor is injected to the grid. The proportional integral (PI) controller and fuzzy logic controller (FLC) are designed and implemented. The FLC outperforms the PI controller in terms of conversion efficiency and injected power quality. A simulation in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment is carried out. An experimental prototype is built to validate the proposed idea. The dynamic and steady-state performances of the FLC controller are found to be better than those of the PI controller. The results are presented in this paper.

  • CdSe is one of the composite semiconductor materials used in hybrid solar cell. CdSe nanorods were fabricated using electrochemical deposition in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template. CdSe were deposited from $CdSO_4$ and $H_2SeO_3$ dissolved aqueous solution by direct current electrochemical deposition. Uniformity of CdSe nanorods were dependent on the diameter and the height of holes in AAO. The current density, current mode, bath composition and temperature were controlled to obtained 1:1 atomic composition of CdSe. CdSe electroplating in AAO is bottom-up filling so we applied direct current is better than others for good uniformity of CdSe nanorods. The optimum conditions to obtain 1:1 atomic composition of CdSe nanorods are direct current $10\;mA/cm^2$, 0.25 M $CdSO_4$-5 mM $H_2SeO_3$ electrolytes at room temperature.

  • The current solar cell industry is experiencing a temporary plateau due to a sluggish economy and oversupply. It is expected that the solar industry can see similar growth to that of the recent past by overcoming the current situation, as there is growing demand globally for solar energy. The current situation led to restructuring of the world's solar industry, and domestic firms will need to have competitiveness through strategic approaches and proprietary technology to survive in the global solar market. Crystalline and amorphous silicon based solar cells have led the solar industry and occupied half or more of the market thus far. They will do so in the future PV market as well by playing a pivotal role in the solar industry. In this paper, the current status and prospects of silicon based solar cells, from materials to comprehensive and high efficiency technology that can emerge in the future, are discussed.

  • This paper proposes a novel active frequency drift (AFD) method for the islanding prevention of grid-connected photovoltaic inverter. To detect the islanding phenomenon of grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) inverters concerning about the safety hazards and the damage to other electric equipments, many kinds of anti-islanding methods have been presented. Among them, AFD method using chopping fraction enables the islanding detection to drift up (or down) the frequency of the voltage during the islanding situation. In this paper, injecting the periodic zero current into the basic AFD method is proposed. This proposed method shows the analytical design value of cf to meet the test procedure of IEEE Std. 1547 with various load conditions. Detection of islanding is verified using simulation tool PSIM.
