  • The current-voltage modeling plays an important role in characterizing photovoltaic systems. A solar cell has a nonlinear characteristic with various parameters influenced by the external environments such as the irradiance and the temperature. In order to accurately predict current-voltage characteristics at low irradiance, the artificial neural networks are applied to effectively quantify nonlinear behaviors. In this paper, a multi-layer perceptron scheme that can make accurate predictions is employed to learn complex formulas for large amounts of continuous data. The simulated results of artificial neural networks model show the accuracy improvement by using MATLAB/Simulink.

  • The Korean electric power supply plan was prepared by greatly enhancing the environmental and safety with considering the economical efficiency of the electric equipment, the impact on the environment and the public safety. As a result, the fossil energy-based power generation sector is accelerating the paradigm shift to eco-friendly energy such as solar power and wind. Also the solar power industry is expected to grow into a super large-sized industry by converging the energy storage and electric vehicle industry. Generally, a levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) is used to calculate the power generation cost for different generation power generation efficiency, operating cost, and life span. In this paper, we have studied the future research and development direction of photovoltaic technology development for the era of massive utilization of photovoltaic solar power, and have studied the LCOE of major countries including China, USA, Germany, Japan and Korea. Finally we have reviewed USA and Japan research programs to reduce the LCOE.

  • Lightweight and flexible photovoltaic (PV) modules are attractive for building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) applications because of their easy construction and applicability. In this study, we fabricated lightweight and flexible c-Si PV modules using ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) front cover and shingled design string cells. The ETFE front cover instead of glass made the PV modules lighter in weight, and the shingled design string cells increased the flexibility. Finally, we fabricated a PV module with a conversion power of 240.08 W at an area of 1.25 m2 and weighed only 2 kg/m2. Moreover, to check the PV module's flexibility, we conducted a bending test. The difference of conversion power between the modules before and after bending shown was only 1.7 W, which showed a power reduction rate of about 0.7%.

  • Among single-phase photovoltaic inverters that can avoid excessive leakage current caused by the large parasitic capacitance of photovoltaic panels, a boost converter followed by a half-bridge inverter is the simplest and has the smallest leakage current. However, due to the high DC-link voltage, the rated voltage of the switching devices is high and the switching loss is large. This paper proposes a new circuit topology which can operate as a buck-boost inverter by adding two bidirectional switches to the output side of the half-bridge inverter instead of removing the boost converter. By reducing two stages of power conversion through the high-voltage DC-link to one stage, power loss can be reduced without increasing costs and leakage current. The feasibility of the proposed circuit topology is verified by computer simulation and power loss calculation.

  • The mesh mask screen, which is generally used for screen printing metallization of silicon solar cell, requires high squeegee pressure and low printing speed. These requirements are acting as a limiting factor in production yield in photovoltaic industries. In order to improve the productivity, a metal mask, which has high durability and high printing speed, has been researched. In this paper, the characteristics of each solar cell, in which electrodes were formed by using a metal mask and a mesh mask, were analyzed through recombination current density. In particular, the metal-induced recombination current density (Jom) representing the recombination of the emitter-metal interface was calculated using the shading method, and the resulting efficiency and open-circuit voltage were analyzed through the diode equation. As a result of analyzing the proportion of the metal-induced recombination current density to the total emitter recombination current density, it was analyzed that the reduction of the metal-induced recombination current density through the metal mask is an important factor in reducing the total recombination current density of the solar cell.

  • Recently, many researchers made progress in various studies improving the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cell. In this paper, we used glass textured by wet-chemical etching process for improvement of photocurrent density in dye-sensitized solar cells. This is owing to increase coefficient of light utilization. Consequently, DSSC using the textured glass exhibit a Jsc of 9.49 mA/$cm^2$, a Voc of 0.73 V and a fill factor (FF) of 0.67 with an overall conversion efficiency of 4.64. This result showed increasing of 20% current density and 16% conversion efficiency using the textured glass. These results suggested that glass texturing was very effective in controlling the light-scattering properties into the photovoltaic cell.

  • Due to the measurement noise or system noise, the performance of photovoltaic power generation system can be degraded. If this noise is contained in the solar array voltage measurement signal, the correct operation of the maximum power point tracker can not be guaranteed. The application of the extended Kalman filter to the photovoltaic system can obtain enhanced states estimation result. The Kalman filter provides a recursive solution to optimally estimate from random noise signals. Additionally, as a consequence of Kalman filter, the unmeasurable state such as inductor current can be estimated without current sensor. The methods for system modeling and extended Kalman filter design are presented and the experimental results verify the validity of the proposed system.

  • Recently, In the production line of batteries, charge and discharge tests are essential to verify battery characteristics. In this case, the battery charging uses a unidirectional AC/DC converter capable of output voltage and current control, and the discharge uses a resistive load. Since this method consumes energy during discharge, it must be replaced with a bi-directional AC/DC converter system capable of charging and discharging. Although it is difficult to replace the connected inverter part of the bi-directional AC/DC converter system due to the high cost, the spread of the solar-connected inverter rapidly increases as the current solar supply business is activated, and thereby the solar-connected type Inverter prices are plunging. If it can be used as a power converter for battery discharge without program modification of the solar-powered inverter, it will have competition. In this paper, propose a new battery discharge system using a combination of a photovoltaic DC/DC simulator and photovoltaic PCS using a battery to be used as a power converter for battery discharge without program modification of a low-cost photovoltaic inverter. In addition, propose an optimal solar characteristic curve for the stable operation of PCS. The validity of the proposed system was verified using a 500[W] class solar DC/DC simulator and a solar PCS prototype.

  • In this paper, we present an economical and practical standard to install a bypass diode in a thin-film PV module. This method helps to reduce heat generation and to prevent module degradation due to excess current from reverse bias. The experimental results confirm that for different numbers of solar cells, there is a relation between the excess reverse current and the degradation of solar cells in a-Si:H modules. The optimal number of solar cells that can be connected per bypass diode could be obtained through an analysis of the results to effectively suppress the degradation and to reduce the heat generated by the module. This technique could be expanded for use in high power crystalline Si PV modules.

  • This paper presents a current-source-inverter based on a buck-boost configuration and its application for residential photovoltaic system. The proposed circuit has five switches. Among them, only one switch acts as chopping, and the other determine the polarity of output; therefore, it can reduce the switching loss. Because the input inductor current is operated on the discontinuous conduction mode, high power factor can be achieved without additional input current controller. So the overall system shows a simple structure. The operational modes are analysed in depth, and then it was verified through the experimental results using a 150 [W] prototype equipped with digital signal processor TMS320F241.
