Oxodipyrromethene was degraded by a self-photosensitized reaction, similar to the degradation of bilirubin by other investigators. Photodegradation of oxodipyrromethene was faster in methanol-d4, in which the life time of singlet oxygen is longer, than in methanol. It was slower in a solvent which contained a singlet oxygen quencher. Moreover, the products from sensitized and unsensitized reactions are same.
The efficiency of photosensitization of methyl linoleate (ML) oxidation by N-acetyl-L-trypophan(NAT) and 3-methyl indole(scatole) was markedly enhanced by increased concentration of ML in ethanol solution. The fluorescence intensities of sensitizers were observed to be quenched by ML, indicating that ML interacts with the indole excited singlet state. The inhibition of photosensitization by azide demonstrated a possible role of singlet oxygen in the photosensitization. The steady state kinetic treatment of azide inhibition of photosensitization was expected to show linear increase of reciprocal yield of ML oxidation product vs. reciprocal ML concentration at constant azide concentration, but the actual slope was nonlinear. This indicates another competing reaction involved in the photosensitization, As a possible competing reaction, electron transfer from ML to the excited sensitizer was proposed, since the measured fluorescence quenching rate constant closely resembled electron transfer rate constant determined from ML concentration dependence of oxidation product formation.
The fatty acid compositions of phospholipids extracted from leaves and leaf mitochondria, which were sampled from several horicultural plants grown under blue color-deficient sunlight (BCDS), were determined and compared with those from plants grown under natural white colored sunlight(WCS). It was found that the mitochondria isolated from plants grown under BCDS contained phospholipid whose degree of unsaturation in unit of number of double bonds per lipid molecule was remarkably higher than that from plants grown under WCS, the relative increment being $8{\sim}49%$. This was significantly larger than the relative increment, $4{\sim}8%$ for total phospholipid extracted from whole leaves grown under BCDS campared to WCS. This observation demonstrated that the blue light effect of sunlight on the chemical property of cellular membranes, as long as it was concerned with fatty acid composition, arose mainly at the mitochondrial membrane. Also observing that the degree of unsaturation of mitochondrial phospholipid was much lower than that of total phospholipid, it was interpreted that this was the consequence of rather active oxidative destruction of lipid-fatty acid components occuring in mitochondrial membrane by the reactive oxygen species, especially superoxide($O_2-$), which was known to be produced in mitochondrial inner membrane through the side reactions of the respiratory electron transport chain and also probably through the photosensitized reaction involving oxygen induced by blue colored light. Thus, it may be tentatively concluded that the extent of photosensitization in mitochondrial membrane could be considerably reduced under BCDS resulting in lowering of the $O_2-$ level in the respirating organelle The possible involvement of photodynamic action in membrane oxidation was also indicated by the fact that the typical fat-soluble antioxidant, ${\alpha}-tocopherol$, was found to be contained on a higher level in leaves under BCDS than those under WCS.
In order to investigate the influence of photosensitized oxidation in the sun-dried irish moss (Chondrus Ocellatus), laver (Porphyra Yezoensis) and ultra violet irradiated oyster (Crassostrea gigas) the oxidation of lipid and isomers of hydroperoxides were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The lipid contents of oyster, irish moss and layer were $2.7\%,\;0.1\%,\;0.1\%$ of respectively. Peroxide value, 56,7 meq/kg in the raw oyster was increased of 100.9 meq/kg by the U.V, irradiation for 4 hours. Also the peroxide values of the irish moss and laver were increased by the sun-drying. In the identification of hydroperoxides isomers by trimethylsily (TMS) derivative of photo-oxidized lipid from oyster, irish moss and laver, the proportions of positional isomer, 9-OOH and 13-OOH were dominant than those 10-OOH and 12-OOH.
The multistep mechanism of photosensitized curing reaction cinnamoylated photosensitive polymer is proposed from the energy level diagram of cinnamic acid and sensitizer, and from the fact that excess of sensitizer brings the sensitivity to a limiting value etc. Various factors which have effects on the ability of sensitizer are also discussed. The mechanism involves following steps: activation to the first excited singlet states of cinnamoyl group(C) and sensitizer(S) by their absorption of photon, their intersystem crossing to the lowest triplet state, bimolecular internal quenching by formation of excimer of sensitizer, triplet excitation energy transfer and intermolecular addition between cinnamoyl group in ground state and that in triplet state. The rate equation derived from this mechanism is $-\frac{d[C]}{dt} = \frac{K_1[C]}{K_2 + [C]}[\frac{I^c_{abs}}{K_3 + [S]} + \frac{K_4[C]}{(K_5 + [C])(K_6 + [S])}(I^s_{abs} + \frac{K_7I^c_{abs}[S]}{K_8 + [S]})]$ where $I^c_{abs}\;and\;I^s_{abs}$: the rates of absorption of photon by cinnamoyl group and sensitizer $K_n$: Constants. It is proved with the cinnamate of poly(glyceryl phthalate)(PGC) in the absence of sensitizer using the infrared analytical method and successfully applied for the experimental data reported on the effects of the degree of cinnamoyl esterification and the concentration of sensitizer upon the sensitivity.
SnS-$TiO_2$ nanocomposites are synthesized using simple, cheap, and less toxic $SnCl_2$ as the tin (II) precursor. The prepared nanoparticles are characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). The XRD and TEM results indicate that the prepared product has SnS nanoparticles and a grain diameter of 30 nm. The DRS demonstrate that SnS-$TiO_2$ possesses the absorption profile across the entire visible light region. The generation of reactive oxygen species is detected through the oxidation reaction from 1,5-diphenyl carbazide (DPCI) to 1,5-diphenyl carbazone (DPCO). It is found that the photocurrent density and photocatalytic effect increase with the modified SnS. Excellent catalytic degradation of Texbrite BA-L (TBA) solution is observed using the SnS-$TiO_2$ composites under visible light irradiation. It is proposed that both the strong visible light absorption and the multiple exciton excitations contribute to the high visible light photocatalytic activity.
As sunlight not always optimized for every terrestrial plant in terms of light quality, quantity and duration, some plants suffer detrimental effects of sunlight exposure under certain conditions. Photoinhibition of photosynthesis is a typical phenomenon representing harmful light effects, commonly observed in many photosynthetic organisms. It is generally accepted that functional, structural loss of photosystem II complex(PSII) is the primary event of photoinhibition. Accumulating data also suggest that singlet oxygen($^1$O$_2$) is the main toxic species directly involved in it. There are two different views on the specific site and mechanism of $^1$O$_2$ production in the photosynthetic membrane. One of them favors the PSII reaction center, where the primary charge pairs recombination occurs as a prerequisite for the generation of $^1$O$_2$, and the other inclines to photosensitized $^1$O$_2$ formation by a substance located outside PSII. This article describes how we, as the advocators of the latter concept, have arrived at the conclusion that $^1$O$_2$ immediately involved in PSII photodamage is largely generated from the Rieske center of the cytochrome b$_{6}$/f complex and diffuses into PSII, attacking the reaction center subunits.s.
Exposure of isolated intact mitochondria to near UV to visible light resulted in not only loss of respiration, the most well-documented phenomenon regarding phototoxic effects in the respiring organelles, but also lipid peroxidation of membranes and mitochondrial swelling; these turned out to be O$_2$-dependent and thus prevented by anaerobiosis, enhanced by a partial deuteration of the suspension medium, and suppressed by the presence of a singlet oxygen ($^1O_2$) scavenger. Measurements of the spectral dependence of such detrimental effects of light on mitochondrial structure and function revealed that all the resulting spectra bear a significant resemblance to the action spectrum for photogeneration of $^1O_2$ from mitochondrial membranes, which in turn carries the spectral characteristics of light absorption by mitochondrial Fe-S centers. Futhermore, destructing the Fe-S centers by a mercurial treatment of mitochondria brought about a striking reduction of the light-induced membrane peroxidation and swelling of mitochondria. These results are consistent with the suggestion that the impairment of functional, structural integrity of mitochondria caused by strong irradiation is directly related to the production of $^1O_2$ in mitochondria, photosensitized by the Fe-S centers. This paper also presents kinetic data which indicate that, among various membrane-bound protein systems associated with mitochondrial energy metabolism, the respiratory chain is the primary target for photodamage.
A self-organized nano-structured, photocatalytic $TiO_2$ membrane with large surface area of anatase crystallites was successfully fabricated by anodization. The nano-structured anodized $TiO_2$ membrane was characterized using EDX, SEM and XRD techniques and the effect of electrolyte type and concentration to fabricate $TiO_2$ metal membrane was also investigated. Regular nano tubular arrays were obtained By the EDX, SEM and XRD patterns, the anodized $TiO_2$ membrane showed the enhanced photocatalytic properties of anatase phase. Photocatalytic activities of fabricated $TiO_2$ metal membrane was also experimentally investigated as model compound of humic acid.
Effects of chlorophyll and visible light exposure on the volatile formations and headspace oxygen content were studied in lard model systems at $55^{\circ}C$. Samples with or without addition of chlorophyll under light underwent photosensization or photooxidation, respectively. Total volatiles (TI) in lard with 5 ppm chlorophyll photosensization were 19 times higher than those in visible light photooxidized samples for 48 hr while TI in lard with chlorophyll in the dark were not significantly different from those in photooxidized samples (p>0.05). Headspace oxygen content in photosensitized lard decreased from 21 to 15% for 48 hr but that in photooxidized lard or that in lard with chlorophyll in the dark did not change significantly (p>0.05), which indicates that lard system used in this study is a photosensitizer-free model system and the presence of chlorophyll accelerated the lipid oxidation only under visible light. Oxidation mechanisms of photooxidation with or without presence of photosensitizers under visible light were not the same based on the difference of oxidized volatile profiles and headspace oxygen depletion.
