Background: Heat energy produced in nuclear reactors and nuclear fuel cycle facilities interactions modifies the physical properties of the shielding materials containing water content. Therefore, in the present paper, effect of the heat on shielding effectiveness of the concretes is investigated for gamma and neutron. The mass attenuation coefficients, effective atomic numbers, fast neutron removal cross-section and exposure buildup factors. Materials and Methods: The mass attenuation coefficients, effective atomic numbers, fast neutron removal cross-section and exposure buildup factors of ordinary and heavy concretes were investigated using NIST data of XCOM program and Geometric Progression method. Results and Discussion: The improvement in shielding effectiveness for photon and reduction in fast neutron for ordinary concrete was observed. The change in the neutron shielding effectiveness was insignificant. Conclusion: The present investigation on interaction of gamma and neutron radiation would be very useful for assessment of shielding efficiency of the concrete used in high temperature applications such as reactors.

Over the last few years, lead-free inorganic metal perovskites have gained impressive ground in empowering satellites in space exploration owing to their material stability and performance evolution under extreme space environments. The present work has examined the versatility of eight such perovskites as space radiation shielding materials by computing their photon, charged particles and neutron interaction parameters. Photon interaction parameters were calculated for a wide energy range using PAGEX software. The ranges of heavy charged particles (H, He, C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si and Fe ions) in these perovskites were estimated using SRIM software in the energy range 1 keV-10 GeV, and that of electrons was computed using ESTAR NIST software in the energy range 0.01 MeV-1 GeV. Further, the macroscopic fast neutron removal cross-sections were also calculated to estimate the neutron shielding efficiencies. The examined shielding parameters of the perovskites varied depending on the radiation type and energy. Among the selected perovskites, Cs2TiI6 and Ba2AgIO6 displayed superior photon attenuation properties. A 3.5 cm thick Ba2AgIO6-based shield could reduce the incident radiation intensity to half its initial value, a thickness even lesser than that of Pb-glass. Besides, CsSnBr3 and La0.8Ca0.2Ni0.5Ti0.5O3 displayed the highest and lowest range values, respectively, for all heavy charged particles. Ba2AgIO6 showed electron stopping power (on par with Kovar) better than that of other examined materials. Interestingly, La0.8Ca0.2Ni0.5Ti0.5O3 demonstrated neutron removal cross-section values greater than that of standard neutron shielding materials - aluminium and polyethylene. On the whole, the present study not only demonstrates the employment prospects of eco-friendly perovskites for shielding space radiations but also suggests future prospects for research in this direction.
The structural and optical properties of Ni-doped transparent glass-ceramics are reviewed. The quantum efficiencies of ceramics were examined to explore suitable crystalline phase for Ni-doping in glass-ceramics. Inverse spinel $LiGa_5O_8$ have the quantum efficiency of almost 100 % at room temperature. Transparent glass ceramics containing $LiGa_5O_8$ was successfully synthesized by heat treatment of $Li_2O-Ga_2-O_3-SiO_2-NiO$ glass. Most of $Ni^{2+}$ ions in glass-ceramic were incorporated into $LiGa_5O_8$ nanocrystals. The near-infrared emission covering from the O-band to L-band (1260-1625 nm) was observed from the Ni-doped $Li_2O-Ga_2O_3-SiO_2$ glass-ceramic though it was not observed from the as-cast glass. The lifetime of the emission was about $580\;{\mu}sec$ even at 300K. The emission quantum efficiency was evaluated as about 10 % that is enough high for practical usage as gain media of optical fiber amplifiers. The figure of merit (the product of the stimulated emission cross section and lifetime) was as high as that of rare-earth-doped glasses. The broad bandwidth, high quantum efficiency and high figure of merit show that transparent glass-ceramics containing $Ni^{2+}:LiGa_5O_8$ nanocrystals are promising candidates as novel ultra-broadband gain media.

A temperature- and coverage-dependant quasi-reversible change in two-photon photoemission (2PPE) of chemisorbed 1-phenyl-1-propyne (PP) on Cu(111) is reported. For PP on Cu(111) at 300 K probed at a photon energy of 4.13 eV, two broad peaks of comparable intensity show final state energies of 7.25 and 7.75 eV above the Fermi level. The former peak could be assigned to the first image potential state (IS, n = 1) and/or unoccupied molecular orbital (UMO), located at 3.1 eV above the Fermi level. The latter is plausibly attributed to a mix of unoccupied higher-order IS (and/or UMO) and occupied surface state (SS) of Cu(111). With decreasing the temperature, the former 2PPE peak shows a shift in position by about 0.2 eV, and the latter exhibits a dramatic increase in intensity. In the system, intermolecular interactions (and/or order-disorder transition) of PP and substrate lattice temperature may play a significant role in change in photoexcitation lifetime (or excitation cross-section), and the unoccupied molecular orbital (UMO)-metal (IS) charge transfer coupling. Our unique 2PPE results provide a deeper insight for understanding photoexcitation charge transfer with temperature in an organic molecule/metal system.
The H.B. Robinson Unit 2 (HBR-2) pressure vessel dosimetry benchmark is an in- and ex-Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) neutron dosimetry benchmark based on experimental data from the HBR-2 reactor, a 2300-MW PWR designed by Westinghouse and put in operation in March 1971, openly available through the SINBAD Database at OECD/NEA data Bank. The goals of the present work were to carry out three-dimensional (3D) fixed source transport calculations in both Cartesian (X,Y,Z) and cylindrical (R,θ,Z) geometries by using the TORT-3.2 discrete ordinates code on very detailed 3D HBR-2 geometrical models and to test the latest broad-group coupled (47 neutron groups + 20 photon groups) working cross section libraries in FIDO-ANISN format with same structure as BUGLE-96, such as BUGJEFF311.BOLIB, BUGENDF70.BOLIB and BUGLE-B7. The results obtained with all the cited libraries were satisfactory and are here reported and compared.

Dark matter is barely known because it cannot be explained using the Standard Model. In addition, dark matter has not been detected yet. It is currently being explored through various ways. In this paper, we studied dark matter in an electron-positron collider using MadGraph5. The signal channel is e+e- → 𝜇+𝜇-A' where A' decays to dimuon. We studied the cross-section by increasing the center-of-mass energy. Central processing unit (CPU) time of simulation was compared with that using a local Linux machine and a KISTI-5 supercomputer (Knight Landing and Skylake). Furthermore, one or more cores were used for comparing CPU time among machines. Results of this study will enable the exploration of dark matter in electron-positron experiments. This study also serves as a reference for optimizing high-energy physics simulation toolkits.
Neutron and gamma-ray shielding properties of Inconel 718 reinforced B4C (0-25 wt%) were investigated using PSD software. Mean free path (MFP), linear and mass attenuation coefficients (LAC,MAC), tenth-value and half-value layers (TVL,HVL), effective atomic number (Zeff), exposure buildup factors (EBF), and fast neutron removal cross-sections (FNRC) values were calculated for 0.015-15 MeV. It was found that MAC and LAC increased with the decrease in the content of B4C compound by weight in Inconel 718. The EBFs were computed using G-P fitting method for 0.015-15 MeV up to the penetration depth of 40 mfp. HVL, TVL, and FNRC values were found to range between 0.018 cm and 3.6 cm, between 2.46 cm and 12.087 cm, and between 0.159 cm-1 and 0.194 cm-1, respectively. While Inconel 718 provides the maximum photon shielding property since it offered the highest values of MAC and Zeff and the lowest value of HVL, Inconel 718 with B4C(25 wt%) was observed to provide the best shielding material for neutron since it offered the highest FNRC value. The study is original in terms of several aspects; moreover, the results of the study may be used in nuclear technology, as well as other technologies including nano and space technologies.
