  • We investigated X-ray radiated from the pulsed Plasma Focus device that translated from electric energy into electromagnetic wave by electric discharge. X-ray radiation is analysed by using pin photodiode and 0.5mm pinhole camera shielded by $25{\mu}m$ Be. The condition of X-ray radiation was that the discharging voltage was 15 kV and the working gas were 0.12 torr Argon. Reproducibility of X-ray radiation is investigated and X-ray temperature is calculated above 3keV.

  • In this work, we report on a new monitoring method for an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panel for lighting by optical sensing of the wave-guided light in the substrate. Using microlens array films, the wave-guided light was extracted into the edge or back side of the panel to be monitored by a photodiode. The luminance of the extracted light was measured as linearly proportional to the front light. Thus, by converting the extracted light into photo voltage, monitoring the luminance change occurring in the OLED is possible. Based on the results and concepts, we have proposed a photodiode-equipped driving circuit which can generate compensated driving current for uniform luminance of OLED panels.

  • Phytofluene was subjected to ozonolysis in ice-cold dichloromethane. The ozonolysis products were fractionated with a silica column and the carbonyl fraction was analyzed by ODS-HPLC with a photodiode array detector. Phytofluene was solubilized in 5% tween 40, and then oxidized by incubating under dim yellow light at 37$^{\circ}C$, 24 hr with continuous shaking. Carbonyl compound and acidic compound were produced. In comparison with autoxidation and ozonolysis, each compound showed the same retention time and UV-vis spectra were identical to the reference cleavage products prepared by ozeonolysis of phytofluene. Absorption spectrum of acidic compound was similar to that of standard 4,5-didehydrogeranyl geranyl acid which is known to possess biological activity. Thus, eccentric cleavage of phytofluene was confirmed to occur in vitro under oxidation condition.

  • Conventional CMOS image sensors (CISs) have a trade-off relationship between dynamic range and sensitivity. In addition, their sensitivity is determined by the photodiode capacitance. In this paper, CISs that consist of dual-sensitivity photodiodes in a unit pixel are proposed for achieving wide dynamic ranges. In the proposed CIS, signal charges are generated in the dual photodiodes during integration, and these generated signal charges are accumulated in the floating-diffusion node. The signal charges generated in the high-sensitivity photodiodes are transferred to the input of the comparator through an additional source follower, and the signal voltages converted by the source follower are compared with a reference voltage in the comparator. The output voltage of the comparator determines which photodiode is selected. Therefore, the proposed CIS composed of dual-sensitivity photodiodes extends the dynamic range according to the intensity of light. A $94{\times}150$ pixel array image sensor was designed using a conventional $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process and its performance was simulated.

  • A sun tracking controller for PTC(parabolic trough concentrator) is a control system used to orient the concentrator toward the sun always, so that the maximum energy can be collected. The work presented here is a design and development of microprocessor based sun tracking control system for PTC. Sun tracking control system consists of a sun sensor and a single axis tracking control system. 80c196KC based control system consists of an analog input unit, 24V DC servomotor drive unit, I/O unit. Sun sensor has been constructed using photodiode and can detect the sun located within ${\pm}50^{\circ}$ measured from the sun sensor normal direction. The sun tracking system developed is being implemented and shows a good sun tracking performance.

  • Visible light identification (VLID) is a user identification system for a door lock application using smartphone that adopts visible light communication (VLC) technology with the objective of high security, small form factor, and cost effectiveness. The user is verified by the identification application program of a smartphone via fingerprint recognition or password entry. If the authentication succeeds, the corresponding encoded visible light signals are transmitted by a light emitting diode (LED) camera flash. Then, only a small size and low cost photodiode as an outdoor interface converts the light signal to the digital data along with a comparator, and runs the authentication process, and releases the lock. VLID can utilize powerful state-of-the-art hardware and software of smartphones. Furthermore, the door lock system is allowed to be easily upgraded with advanced technologies without its modification and replacement. It can be upgraded by just update the software of smartphone application or replacing the smartphone with the latest one. Additionally, wireless connection between a smartphone and a smart home hub is established automatically via Bluetooth for updating the password and controlling the home devices. In this paper, we demonstrate a prototype VLID door lock system that is built up with LEGO blocks, a photodiode, a comparator circuit, Bluetooth module, and FPGA board.

  • a-Si : H photodiodes for image sensor have been fabricated and characterized. Photosensitivity of a ITO/a-Si : H/Al photodiode without blocking layer was 0.7 under the applied voltage of 5 V and peak spectral sensitivity in visible region was found at 620 nm. Dark current of ITO/a-SiN : H/a-Si : H/p-a-Si : H/Al photodiode was suppressed by hole blocking layer and electron blocking layer at the value of lower than 1.5 pA to the applied voltage of 10 V. Also maximum photosensitivity was about 1 under the applied voltage of 3 V and peak spectral sensitivity was found at 540 nm.

  • Theoretical analysis is presented for expending of the usable frequency range of optoelectronic mixing detection in the radio over fiber network system. We define the normalized gain to evaluate the performance of the optical mixing detection, and conform the possibilities of detection for the high frequency signals beyond the cutoff frequency of a photodiode. Optical mixing detection mechanism is analyzed by solving the continuity equation for the carriers of a photodiode. The normalized gain is independent on the signal frequency and the frequency difference between the optical signal and the local signal. Also, the amplitude of the local signal and the bias voltage are needed to be optimized at the same time in order to maximize the normalized gain.

  • A simplified integration process including packaging is presented, which enables the realization of the portable fluorescence detection system. A fluorescence detection microchip system consisting of an integrated PIN photodiode, an organic light emitting diode (OLED) as the light source, an interference filter, and a microchannel was developed. The on-chip fluorescence detector fabricated by poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)-based packaging had thin-film structure. A silicon-based integrated PIN photo diode combined with an optical filter removed the background noise, which was produced by an excitation source, on the same substrate. The active area of the finger-type PIN photo diode was extended to obtain a higher detection sensitivity of fluorescence. The sensitivity and the limit of detection (LOD S/N = 3) of the system were $0.198\;nA/{\mu}M$ and $10\;{\mu}M$, respectively.

  • Lycopene was subjected to ozonolysis in ice-cold dichloromethane. The ozonolysis products were fractionated with a silica column and the carbonyl fraction was analyzed by ODS-HPLC with a photodiode array detector and by LC-MS. UV-vis spectra and $[M+H]^+$ of the carbonyl compound peaks showed clearly that acycloretinal, apo-14'-lycopenal, apo-12'-lycopenal, apo-10'-lycopenal, apo-8'-lycopenal and apo-6'-lycopenal were formed by ozonolysis of lycopene. Lycopene was solubilized in toluene and aqueous Tween 40, and then oxidized by incubating at $37^{\circ}C$ under atmospheric oxygen. Carbonyl compounds were produced. In comparison with autoxidation and ozonolysis, each compound showed the same retention time and UV-vis spectra are identical to the reference cleavage products prepared by ozonolysis of lycopene. Thus, eccentric cleavage of lycopene was confirmed to occur in vitro under oxidation condition.
