Larvae of the gunnel Pholis fangi were collected in coastal waters off Daecheon with a bag net from March to June, 1988, and with a ring larva net in February 1989. Maturity and spawning period were analyzed by examination of the gonads of adult fish collected with a bag net from May 1998 through November 1999. In February, the larvae were widely distributed in the outer and inner Cheonsu Bay. From March to April the larvae were present mainly the inner bay; they were absent there in May and found mainly in the outer bay. After June, few gunnel larvae were collected in the study area. This suggests a seaward movement of gunnel from the nursery grounds of the bay to offshore feeding grounds. The otolith of larvae smaller than 10 mm in total length did not show a distinct growth stop. The growth stop is believed to be formed in the early larval stage when the total length is about 10 mm. This period coincides with the time of shoreward migration, suggesting a metabolic change during this period. At a total length of 30 to 40 mm, the shape of the otolith changes from spherical to elongate. Daily growth rate in length was estimated by the Gompertz equation, which is represented as follows: TL = 6.702exp{2.925"1-exp (-0.008 t)"} ($r^2=0.94$, N = 92) Assuming daily deposition of growth increments in the otolith, the time of first growth increment formation was shown to be from December to January. Gonad observations show that Pholis fangi spawns from November to December. So, the hatching time is thought to be about one month.

The larval fish, which had been previously identified or classified as Enedrias (Pholis) nebulosus, Enedrias spp., Pholis taczanowskii, and unidentified species belonging to Protosalanginae, were revealed as that of a gunnel, Enedrias fangi. This species has been known as a cold water species mainly caught in the Yellow Sea. Larval E. fangi showed peak abundances in the coastal waters off Chonlla Province in March, Chungnam Province in April, and Kyunggi Province in May and June. The primary spawning season of E. fangi seemed to be winter (November to January), and the eggs hatched after 60 days from spawning. The average growth rate of larval fish was about 0.33mm/day. The larval fish of 40mm in body length began to move to the bottom, and stayed in the bottom cold water mass when their body length was greater than 60-70mm. The average annual catches of larval E. fangi from 1985 to 1991 were 5,000M/T in the Yellow Sea, which were more than 99 % of the total gunnel catches around Korean waters. The peak season of catches was from March or April to July in Chungnam Province, and from May to July in Kyunggi Province.
During the investigation of fish fauna from the Kokunsan Islands off west coast of Korea from 1989 to 1993, authors confirmed 102 fish species belonging to 81 genera, 50 families and 12 orders. Of these the following 8 species were common : Herengila zunasi, Engraulis japonica, Johnius grypotus, Pholis fangi, Repomucenus ornatipinnis, Chasmichthys gulosus, Tridentiger trigonocephalus, and Cynoglossus joyneri. Of the twelve orders recognized herein, Perciformes, Scorpaeniformes and Pleuronectiformes include approximately 74% of the fish fauna in this area. The largest family is the Gobiidae representing 12 species. Pholis fangi, Repomucenus ornatipinnis, Repomucenus koreanus, Takifugu flavidus and Takifugu obscurus collected are endemic to the Yellow Sea. Fifteen specimens of an unknown Sebastes species was collected. This species resembles Sebastes hubbsi and Sebastes longispinnis, but the species differs from other sebastes species reported in Korea in the number of dorsal fin rays, lateral line pores, gill rakers and in color patterns of body sides.
To determine diel and seasonal variations in abundance and species composition of fishery resources, day and night samples were collected by a bag net from April through November 1997 off Kogunsan-gundo. A total of 75 species was collected. The total catch was consisted of 71% fish, 18% shrimps, 7% cephalopods and 4% crabs. Pholis fangi and Engraulis japonicus predominated, and accounted for 87% of the total number of fish collected. Most of them were larvae and juvniles. P. fangi and Ammodyres personatus occurred from April to June, and E. japonicus occurred from July to November, suggesting that they used the coastal areas as nursery ground at the different season to avoid competition. Dominant fish larvae and juveniles showed the significant diel difference in catch.

The objectives of this study to determine seasonal changes in species composition and abundance of fish and decapod assemblage, and the relationships between environmental factors and their abundance in an eelgrass bed of Jindong Bay. A total of 26 fish species and 29 decapod species were collected by a small beam trawl from an eelgrass bed in Jindong Bay in 2002. The dominant fish species were Hexagrammos otakii, Pholis neulosa and P. fangi and these accounted for 48.4 % in the total number of individuals. Dominant decapod taxa were Palaemon macrodactylus, Charybdis japonica, Pagurus minutus and C. bimaculata. These were primarily small species or early juveniles of larger species. Species composition and abundance varied greatly showing a peak in the number of individuals in April and May, and peak biomass in fish in July and decapods in August. Catch rate was low in winter months both in fish and in decapod. Seasonal changes in the abundance of fishes and decapods corresponded with eelgrass biomass and abundance of food organisms indirectly.

A study for species composition and abundance of the fish assemblages in the eastern Jinhae Bay, Korea was conducted using monthly larval collection by a RN80 net from October, 2010 to September, 2011. Of all the 45 species collected, the dominant species were Clupea pallasii, Hexagrammos otakii, Pholis fangi and Engraulis japonicus. Clupea pallasii, Hexagrammos otakii, Pholis fangi in winter and examined Engraulis japonicus, Acanthogobius sp., Parablennius yatabei, and Tridentiger trigonocephalus in summer appeared seasonally. Popoulation characteristic by stations was not clear seasonally and spatially, and appearance aspects of dominant species were similar by stations. Compared our results with other studies in the South Sea, dominant species and their appearance period were similar to their spawning period. Finally, the appearance period of the larvae in the South Sea was closely resulted to spawning period rather than the regional characteristic.

The species composition and seasonal variation in abundance of fishes in the Nakdong River estuary were investigated monthly from February 1987 to January 1988. During the study period, 23,008 specimens belonging to 100 species were collected. The most abundant fish species were Repomucenus valenciennei, Pholis fangi, Leiognathus nuchalis, Trachurus japonicus, and Sardinella zunasi. These five species comprised 63.0% of total fishes and 47.8% of total biomass collected. The seasonal dominant fish species were P. fangi and R. valenciennei in spring, R. valenciennei and Cynoglossus joyneri in summer, Thryssa kammalensis and Apogon lineatus in fall, and R. valenciennei, L. nuchalis and S. zunasi in winter. The number of fish species, number of individuals collected, and species diversity indices fluctuated with the seasons. The number of species and number of individuals decreased significantly in the upper estuary. While temperature was an important factor which influenced on seasonal fluctuation of the fish community, salinity determined the spatial distribution of fishes.
The species composition and seasonal variation of fish assemblage in the coastal water off Gadeok-do, Korea were studied using the monthly trawled samlpes through a year of 1998. During the study period, 110 species of fishes from 57 families were collected. Repomucenus valenciennei, Thryssa kammalensis, Leiognathus nuchalis and Zoarces gilli dominated the fish assemblage throughout the year, and were responsible for $ 57.6{\%}$ and $37.2{\%}$ in the number of individuals and biomass, respectively. Fish species of secondary importance in abundance were Sillago japonica, Apogon lineatus, Pholis fangi, Engraulis japonicus, Thryssa adelae, Pho;is nebulosa, Conger myriaster, Liparis tanakai, Acentrogobius pflaumii, Limanda yokohamae, Chaeturichthys hexanema, Erisphex pottii and Cunoglossus abbreviatus. Higher numbers of species were collected in spring and autumn than in summer and winter. Abundance was high in spring and autumn, and low in summer and winter, Species diversity indices showed that the fish assemblage was more diverse in autumn than any other seasons.
190 species in 82 families of marine fishes were collected from 6 survey stations along the southwestern coast of Korea, from April 1996 to March 1997. A checklist of fishes from southwestern coast of Korea was given with their records of the specimens in the present investigations. Analysis of fish species compostion in this areas showed that the family Gobiidae was the most abundant and Scorpaenidae was the next. The fishes living in this area were under the influence of the Tsushima warm current and the Yellow Sea. Among them, Tridentiger trigonocephalus, Repomucenus valenciennei and Thryssa adela were commonly found from the each sites, and Chirolophis wui, Pholis fangi, Repomucenus koreanus, and Acanthogobius luridus are endemic speices of the to Yellow Sea.
Seasonal variation in species composition of fish with depth was determined by analysis of bimonthly samples collected by a beach seine at the shallow water (St. 1 < 1.5m) and by beam trawl at the two stations (St. 2, 5~7m and St. 3 > 15 m) from October 1997 to August 1998 off Ippa-do in Asan Bay. Of forty species identified, 13 species at St. 1,28 species at the St. 2 and 30 species at the St. 3 were collected. The fish density was also increased with depth. Favonigobius gymnauchen occupied 55.7% at St. 1 and 38.9% of the number of individuals at St. 2. Almost of fish collected at these two stations were juveniles, and they were principally collected in August and in November. At St. 3, relatively large fishes were collected. Among them Pholis fangi and Chaeturichthys stigmatias predominated in the number of individuals. Abundance was low, but a large number of species were collected in winter. Principal component analysis revealed that the species composition at the shallower stations was different from that at the deeper station. The number of species and abundance of fish in Asan Bay was lower than in the other western coastal waters of Korea. Species composition in the study area of sandy bottom was different from that in the inner Asan Bay of mud bottom.
