  • This study explored and described the living spiritual experience and was attempted to gain an understanding of spirituality. This was done by eliciting participants′ verbal descriptions of their experiences. Method: Data was obtained from in-depth interviews with one cancer patient, one pastor, and three missionaries after obtaining informed consent from each. Interviews were tape recorded and transcribed verbatim. The transcripts were analyzed using Colaizzi′s phenomenological method. Sandelowski′s evaluation criteria for qualitative research, such as reliability, suitability and auditability, were also used to establish reliability and validity of this study. Result: The five major theme clusters that designated the essence of the spiritual experience, "spiritual awareness," "interconnectedness," "love," "tran- scendent energy," "purpose and meaning in life," emerged from the analysis. Conclusion: This study revealed that spirituality was activated by awareness through introspection and interconnectedness with a Supreme Being. The interconnectedness with a Supreme Being played an important role in harmonious relationships with others and self. It also resulted in revealing the other beneticial attributes of spirituality. Love, the core concept of the interconnectedness, worked as a transcendent energy. Also, the ability to see beyond reality and resulted in finding meaning in life and accomplishing well being.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to explore university students' views on a childbirth to gaining a deeper understanding of their individual thinking and the meaning that it hold for them. Methods: A Phenomenological approach was used. Subjects were 10 university students who go to university in D city. The method proposed by Colaizzi (1978) was used to guide the process of data analysis. Results: The formulated meaning were classified into nine themes. And then the nine themes were finally grouped into five theme clusters as follow: 'a smooth life', 'the law of nature', 'living a real life', 'fear and burden'. Conclusion: University students' views on a childbirth reflect with the run of the lower birth rate and the aging population in Korean society. Therefore, nursing interventions should be directed toward supporting their positive thinking and changing their negative thinking on childbirth.

Methods: The participants of study were 7 unmarried teenage mothers who lived in shelters in D city, and whose ages ranged from 15 to 19 years. Data gathering through in-depth interviews, 3 to 5 times, was done from August 2002 to September 2003. Data were analyzed with Colaizzi's(1978) phenomenological methodology. Results: The implications of pregnancy and childbirth experience for unmarried teenage mothers were "Seem to live in hell", "Desire for a miscarriage", "Lethargy", "Feel maternity", "Feel unjustified", and "Change of sexual perception". Conclusion: These findings contribute to understanding the pregnancy and childbirth experience of unmarried teenage mothers and can be used as sexual education information to help unmarried teenage mothers to prevent further unplanned pregnancies.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate conflicts and the experiences of conflict resolution of hospital nurses. Methods: This qualitative study used phenomenological methodology. The research participants were 8 nurses of C hospital. Data were collected through in-depth individual interviews from November 2016 to February 2017. The data analysis method was based on Colaizzi's approach. Results: The study results showed that the experiences of nurses consisted of 15 themes and 6 theme clusters: 1) Ambiguous role, 2) Recognizing lack of competence, 3) Difficulty maintaining relationships, 4) Unsatisfactory work environment, 5) Efforts to resolve conflicts, and 6) Conflict resolution process through labor union. Conclusion: The findings of this study recommend that hospital organizations and managers should pay attention to improving the work environment and organizational culture of members. The results of the present study can improve the understanding of various aspects of the daily life of hospital nurses.

  • The performance of turbo pump drops rapidly and it gets into break-down when the void fraction reaches above the threshold value because the impeller flow passage is choked up with air bubbles. Phenomenological understanding of break-down and pumping recovery mechanisms under air-water two-phase flow conditions are therefore important for pump designers and essential assignment for researchers. In this paper, we investigated the characteristics of break-down and pumping recovery due to entrained air occurring inside a screw-type centrifugal pump which has a wide flow passage mainly through the findings of suction and discharge pressures, rotational speed, flow rate measurements and visualization.

  • Fatigue crack propagation of duplex stainless steel weldments was studied to develop further phenomenological understanding of the influences of welding heat cycle accompanying microstructural changes. Fatigue tests were carried out under constant amplitude of load in air at room temperature. The results showed that the crack propagation rate was different in base metal, heat affected zone and welding line. The crack propagation behavior in each part of duplex stainless steel was strongly dependent on phase ratio(.gamma../.alpha.) and several factors of microstructure also affected this propagation behavior. The fractographic feature in each part of steel were discussed on crack propagation behaviors.

  • This paper focuses on Wajiro Kon (1888-1973) and his architectural efforts on theorizing Korean minka in the early 1920s. Wajiro Kon's unique phenomenological approach, so different from the positivistic analyses of his contemporaries, evident in his meticulous sketches and vivid descriptions, helped him theorize how the craft-oriented architectural development of Korean minka were shaped by people's everyday lives. In particular, he found that ondol had developed in various and complex ways, creating differences between the northern and southern Korean regions. Moreover, Kon identified the practical improvements in Korean minka made by inventive, creative people. However, the paper demonstrates that in this process, the new understanding retained the dual perspective of Korean minka as not only environmentally formulated, craft-oriented artifacts but also as re-formed objects that should be improved through an interplay with external factors.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore middle-aged child care providers' experience in caring for children in the community. Methods: The participants were 10 middle-aged child care providers. In-depth interviews were conducted between August and September, 2014 until data. Colaizzi's method of data analysis was applied to inductively determine themes and formulated meanings. Data saturation was achieved and methodological rigor was established Results: Four themes were extracted from 12 meanings. The four themes of the child care providers' experience in caring for children were: 1) weariness from care-giving, 2) the search for one's own solutions, 3) a cheerful attitude to life, 4) the opportunity to start a new life. Conclusion: The results of this study provide useful information for understanding child care providers' experiences in caring for children and establishing effective strategies to support these child care providers.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the meaning and essence of experiences of stress in mothers of preschoolers with atopic dermatitis. Methods: This study employed a qualitative research design. Seven mothers of preschoolers with atopic dermatitis were interviewed and the data were analyzed using Giorgi's phenomenological method. Results: Five main themes and 12 theme clusters emerged. The 5 main themes were 1) the mother's enduring heartache from the conflict that arise among family members, 2) the complete loss of daily happiness, 3) the steady stream of emotional fluctuations, 4) struggling to bear the heavy financial burden, and, 5) a life of hope accompanied by stress. Conclusion: The results of this study provide an in-depth understanding of stress among mothers of preschoolers with atopic dermatitis. These results can be used in the development of nursing interventions to provide psychological and emotional support for mothers and family members.
