  • Graphite reinforced conductive polymer composites for PEMFC bipolar plates were fabricated by the compression molding technique. Graphite powder was mixed with an phenol resin to impart electrical property in composites. In this study, conductive polymer composites with high filler $loadings(>60wt.\%)$ were manufactured to accomplish high electrical conductivity above 100S/cm. The level of compaction is important because graphite powder increase electrical conductivity of composites by direct physical contact between particles. The optimum molding pressure according to filler was proposed experimentally. Various tests(electrical conductivity, flexural strength, compressive strength, leach test, etc) were carried out to verify the performance of fabricated composites for PEMFC bipolar plates. Fabricated composites have good electrical conductivity and mechanical strength. The results of leach test and contact angle measurement showed similar characteristics compared with commercial bipolar plates.

  • Real time health monitoring system was studied to detect the . generation of defects in the composite structures during service life. The PZT sensors were embedded into the woven-glass/phenol composite plate during the fabrication. VARTM (Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding) process were used to fabricate the composite plate. A Teflon tape was embedded between glass fiber layers to mimic delamination induced during service. Normalized maximum amplitude and energy analyses were used for the acquired signals. Both amplitude and energy of acquired signals were extremely sensitive to the delamination. Therefore, it was successful to detect and to locate the defects in composite plate by monitoring signals from sensors and using the proposed method.

  • As there is a growing trend to make high quality steel improving production efficiency and utilizing slag as resources the technologies of hot metal pretreatment have been progressed to meet these demands. Although mill scale $Na_2CO_3$ and CaO used as fluxes proved to be excellent agents then can severely corrode refractories such as chamotte and high alumina for torpedo or open ladle car. Thus it was considered necessary to develop new refractories which can endure suchy conditions. Desulfurization fluxes vastly used in POSCO are $CaCO_3$ and CaO Recent trials have been made by testing phenol resin bonded $Al_2O_3-SiC-C$ bricks in torpedo ladle car for hot metal pretreatment. The results showed that the life of this brick became about 1.2 times longer than that of foreign products. And the crushing strength M.O.R corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance were tested.

  • A residue from the newsprint waste was investigated as a filler in adhesive for bonding southern pine plywood. The residue was prepared by drying the wet residue to 8% moisture content and grinding the dry material using a laboratory Wiley mitt with a 75-${\mu}m$(200-mesh) screen. The residue was compared to a commercial filler commonly used in structural plywood adhesives. A total of 48 three-ply panels. 12.7mm nominal thickness and 0.3 by 0.3 m in size, were fabricated at two press times(4 and 5 min) and three assembly times(20, 40 and 60 min). Evaluations of the residue were carried out by performance tension shear tests after two 4-hour boil accelerated aging tests on plywood. The test results included tension shear strength and estimated wood failure values. All plywood made with the residue filler were comparable to the control-bonded plywood. These results indicate that residue from the newsprint waste streams would be suitable as filler for plywood adhesives.

  • In this paper. we studied cut off characteristics and fire hazard of residual current protective devices(RCD or ELB) for low voltage. The operative time of RCD with grounding resistance was analyzed by using RCD operating tester. The surface structure and composition of insulator were analyzed by using scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy(EDX). The surface of phenol resin showed network structure and void. The spectra shown in EDX analysis are composed not only of the corresponding elements but also of several new spectra, as CK. OK$\alpha$. MgK, SiK. and CaK, which were absent in original material.

  • Chop molding composites and 2D carbon/carbon composites were manufactured by hot press molding method. Phenol resin of novolac type was used for matrix precursor and PAN-based carbon, PAN-based graphite and pitch-based carbon fiber were used for reinforcement and boron oxide was used for oxidation retardant. All of the composites were treated by $2000^{\circ}C$ and $2400^{\circ}C$ graphitization process, respectively. After graphitization process, amount of a boron residue in carbon/carbon composites is much according to irregularity of used raw materials. Under the presence of boron in carbon/carbon composites, catalytic effect of boron was a little at $2000^{\circ}C$ graphitization temperature. However, it was quite at $2400^{\circ}C$ graphitization.

  • The structural studies of amorphous isotropic carbon prepared from pyrolysis of phenol formaldehyde resin have been carried out using X-ray diffraction. X-ray diffraction from as prepared sample at $1000^{\circ}C$ and a sample treated at $1900^{\circ}C$ revealed that both are amorphous even though there are small differences in short range order. It is found that both are graphite like carbon (GLC) with predominantly $sp^2$ hybridization. Small angle X-ray scattering results show that as prepared sample mainly consists of thin two dimensional platelets of graphitic carbon whereas they grow in thickness to become three dimensional materials of nano dimensions.

  • Soft magnetic iron powders have been coated with polyester or phenol resin. And the coated powder (soft magnetic composite) have been pressed into ring type core over the pressure of 870 MPa. Green density, magnetic flux density, permeability, core loss of the samples were measured to look at the effect of the coating materials and the amount of them. Green density is increased with the amount of coating materials and shows the maximum value, 6.5 $g/cm^3$ at 5 w/o, but decreased over it. And lowest value of the core loss is showed for the 5 w/o coated samples.

  • Cinnamoyl ester(PGEFC) of poly(phloroglucinol-formaldehyde) glycidyl ether which has photosensitive functional group was prepared to apply to photoresist. Photosensitivity of PGEFC was estimated by the solubility difference in organic solvent before and after exposure to light. The yield of residual film was calculated by immersing the sample-coated quartz plates in the solvent which was used in coating. The yield of the residual film which was closely related to the sensitivity of the film, was affected by the degree of polymerization of the backbone resin, sensitizers and their concentration. The sensitivity was depended upon the degree of polymerization. Most of effective sensitizer for PGEFC among the sensitizers was 2, 6-dichloro-4-nitroaniline.

  • Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technique method using a resonance frequency mode was carried out for woodceramics produced at different carbonizing temperatures (600℃, 800℃, 1000℃, 1200℃, 1500℃) at the phenol resin impregnation rate of 70%, for three kinds of species (Pinus densifora, Pinus koraiensis, Larix leptolepis), respectively. There was a poor relationship between density and static bending MOR. However, close correlations were found between dynamic MOEd and static bending MOR, and between static MOEs and MOR. Especially, the correlation coefficient was highest between MOEd and static bending MOR. Therefore, the MOEd using the resonance frequency mode is useful as a NDE method for predicting the MOR of woodceramics produced at different carbonizing temperatures.
