  • Experiments were performed to study solidification of phase change material on a finned vertical tube when either conduction In the solid or natural convection in a liquid controls the heat transfer. The liquid was housed in a cylindrical containment vessel whose surface was maintained at a uniform, time-invariment temperature during a data run, and the solidification occurred at a finned and unfinned vertical tube positioned along the axis of the vassel. The phase change material(PCM) employed in this experiment is 99 percent pure n-Octacosan paraffin($C -{28}H_{58}/$). For conduction-controlled and convection-controlled solidification, the enhancement of the solidified mass rate due to finning is great when the solidified layer is thin and decreases as the layer grows thicker. It is studied that the latent energy($E_{\lambda}$) is the largest contributor to the total extracted energy($E_{\lambda} + E_{sl}+E_{s2}$) and the total extracted energy rate at a finned vertical tube is greater than that at a unfinned vertical tube.

  • The life cycle assessment on greenhouse gas emission of reinforced concrete buildings shows that more than 70 percent of greenhouse gas that is discharged by a building is discharged in the building maintenance stage, including cooling and heating. To reduce the greenhouse gas emission, maintenance planning to minimize the energy consumption is necessary in the design stage. In this paper, two heat storage rooms are tested to save the air cooling energy of the buildings. The specimens are essentially identical, except that chamber A contained paraffin sheets as the finishing material, while the other, chamber B, served as a control. The test results show that chamber A with the paraffin sheets exhibited less temperature change than chamber B without the sheets when temperature was increased outside of the specimens. The heating energy was probably consumed in the phase change of the paraffin sheets, which can be useful for reducing energy consumption related to air cooling during the summer.

  • In the recent 10 years the protected cultivation area in Korea has been increased rapidly, and now it is very important issue to develop the heating and cooling system using the renewable energy, because the greenhouse heating and cooling cost is increased with the fossil fuel price rises. Actually the development of the cooling system is more difficult than that of the heating system, since the cooling load of greenhouse in the summer season is 2―3 times larger than the heating load in the winter season. In this study low temperature phase change materials (LTPCM) for the cold storage system were selected and developed. The theoretical and experimental analysis of thermal characteristics of LTPCM makes it possible to control the phase change temperature and stabilize the thermo-physical properties. LTPCM developed in this study has good advantages to be used as the cold storage not only for the house and working space in factory but also for the cold storage of agricultural and live-stock products.

  • For the distribution of fresh produce, the thermoelectric cooling system combined with thermo electric materials (TEM) and phase change material (PCM) was studied. The PCM used this study was produced by in-situ polymerization technology which referred microencapsulation of hydrocarbon (n-tetradecane and n-hexadecane). In this study, quality characteristics of bell peppers in thermoelectric cooling system combined with TEM and PCM were analyzed and control was placed in an EPS (expanded polystyrene) box. As a result of quality characteristics analysis, weight of bell peppers decreased and moisture content of bell peppers was 90.96~94.43% during storage. Vitamin C content of bell pepper decreased during storage and reduction ratio of control was higher than that of BPT-5 treatment(bell pepper in thermoelectric cooling system with PCM which is kept the temperature at $5^{\circ}C$). The result of color value, on 21 day, ${\Delta}E$ value of BPT-5 treatment was 5.05 while that of control was 41.8. On 21 day, total bacteria count of BPT-5 treated bell pepper shown less than that of control. In conclusion, it suggested that the thermoelectric cooling system combined with PCM improved quality of fresh produce during transportation and storage.

  • This study treats the analysis of the performance and the design of plume abatement wet/dry cooling tower with dry type heat exchanger using a numerical method. A two-dimensional analysis is performed using the finite volume method for mechanical draft counterflow and crossflow tower. For a coupling problem between water and air system, a turbulent two phase flow is considered. Effectiveness-NTU method is used for modeling of the dry type heat exchanger. The parameter change simulations of the outer wall shape, the relative flowrate of air, and attachment of an air mixer are performed to examine the effect on plume abatement. It is found that if the relative air flowrate ratio and the adequate air mixer type are chosen well in addition to the ratio of water to air flowrate, the loss of the cooling capacity and the additional cost are reduced and the plume is abated.

  • According to the improvement of PC performance, it is expected that calorific value, which causes PC to malfunction, is increased. Therefore, the development of new cooling system is recently required. As the method to solve this problem, we applied loop heat pipe to PC cooling system. The advantage of the loop heat pipe is that it has a small size, light weight, simple shape, long life and it has a good performance on heat transfer, no-noise, wide range of applicable temperature and no supply of power from the outside. It is confirmed that loop heat pipe reduces thermal resistance and has a good performance on PC cooling.

  • As more high power wide band gap devices are being utilized. the thermal management issues associated with these devices need to be resolved. High power small devices dissipate excessive heat that must be cooled, but traditional cooling methods are insufficient to provide such a cooling means. This paper will evaluate a micro-capillary pumped loop thermal management system that is incorporated into the shim of the device, taking advantage of phase-change to increase the thermal conductivity of the system. The results of the modeling of the thermal management system will be discussed.

  • In this study $H_2O$-NaCl mixture was selected as a cold thermal storage material and its phase change temperature($liquid{\Leftrightarrow}solid$) was controlled with the molar concentration of NaCl. Ion dipole interaction mechanism and the fusion and crystallization structure of $H_2O$-NaCl were visualized with the low and high concentration of NaCl in the heating and cooling processes. In this study, the original cause of the appearance of two steps phase change period in heating and cooing processes were found by the visualization of the ion dipole interaction mechanism of $H_2O$-NaCl, and the theoretical equation of the phase change temperature variation in the NaCl high molar concentration was rearranged.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the thermal properties of TMA clathrate compound applicable to cold storage system for building air-conditioning. Especially, the test tube experiments are performed by comparing and analyzing the temperature of phase change, specific heat and subcooling characteristic according to the variation of density, temperature of heat source and charging quantity in TMA clathrate compound. The results are summarized as follows:1) $-15^{\circ}C$ is not proper as the temperature of heat source because the temperature of subcooling is above $8.3^{\circ}C$ 2) temperature of phase change is dropped as the temperature of heat source is lower, 3) the effect of subcooling suppression with about 8$^{\circ}C$ is confirmed when the temperature of heat source is $-10^{\circ}C$ in case of 26, 27, and 30wt%, while the temperature of subcooling is about $0^{\circ}C$ when the temperature of heat source is $-15^{\circ}C$ in case of 25, 26 and 30wt%. Thus, the effect of subcooling suppression is greater as the temperature of heat source is lower. Additionally, the concentrative study is needed on mass concentration causing the phase change without subcooling phenomenon when the temperature of heat source is $-15^{\circ}C$. Thus, it is concluded that TMA clathrate compound has enough thermal properties as the cold storage medium for building air-conditioning.

  • Heat dissipation technology for semiconductors and electronic packaging has a substantial impact on performance and lifespan, but efficient heat dissipation is currently facing limited improvement. Owing to the high integration density in electronic packaging, heat dissipation components must become thinner and increase their performance. Therefore, heat dissipation materials are being devised considering conductive heat transfer, carbon-based directional thermal conductivity improvements, functional heat dissipation composite materials with added fillers, and liquid-metal thermal interface materials. Additionally, in heat dissipation structure design, 3D printing-based complex heat dissipation fins, packages that expand the heat dissipation area, chip embedded structures that minimize contact thermal resistance, differential scanning calorimetry structures, and through-silicon-via technologies and their replacement technologies are being actively developed. Regarding dry cooling using single-phase and phase-change heat transfer, technologies for improving the vapor chamber performance and structural diversification are being investigated along with the miniaturization of heat pipes and high-performance capillary wicks. Meanwhile, in wet cooling with high heat flux, technologies for designing and manufacturing miniaturized flow paths, heat dissipating materials within flow paths, increasing heat dissipation area, and reducing pressure drops are being developed. We also analyze the development of direct cooling and immersion cooling technologies, which are gradually expanding to achieve near-junction cooling.
