  • Air-assisted atomizer flames are investigated numerically to study spray structures in nonburning and burning conditions based on experimental data. A PDA is used to measure droplet size, velocity, and number density for both nonburning and burning spray. Computations utilize time-averaged gas-phase equations and $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model for simplicity. The major features of the liquid-phase model are that a SSF approach is used to represent the effect of gas-phase turbulence on droplet trajectories and vaporization, an infinite-diffusion model is employed to represent the transient liquid-phase process. Computation and experiment results show that the droplet acceleration and evaporation proceed quickly in near the atomizer, characterizing high number densities and a strong convective effect. The primary combustion zone, however, is dorminated by the gas phase reaction and exhibits a sheath combustion.

  • The Kepler(NASA) and CoRoT(ESA) space telescopes are surveying thousands of exoplanet for finding Earth-like exoplanets with similar environments of the Earth. Then the TPF(NASA), DARWIN(ESA) and many large-aperture ground telescopes have plan for spectroscopic observations of these earth-like exoplanets in next decades. Now, it has been started to simulate the disk averaged spectra of the earthlike exoplanets for comparing the observed spectra and suggesting solutions of environment of these planets. Previous research, the simulations are based on radiative transfer method, but these are limited by optical models of Earth system and instruments. We introduce a new simulation method, IRT(Integrated Ray Tracing) to overcome limitations of previous method. The 3 components are defined in IRT; 1)Sun model, 2)Earth system model (Atmosphere, Land and Ocean), 3)Instrument model. The ray tracing in IRT is simulated in composed 3D real scale space from inside the sun model to the detector of instrument. The Sun model has hemisphere structure with Lambertian scattering optical model. Atmosphere is composed of 16 distributed structures and each optical model includes BSDF with using 6SV radiative transfer code. Coastline and 5 kinds of vegetation distribution data are used to land model structure, and its non-Lambertian scattering optical model is defined with the semi-empirical "parametric kernel method" used for MODIS(NASA) and POLDER(CNES) missions. The ocean model includes sea ice cap structure with the monthly sea ice area variation, and sea water optical model which is considering non-lambertian sun-glint scattering. Computation of spectral imaging and radiative transfer performance of Earth system model is tested with hypothetical space instrument in IRT model. Then we calculated the disk averaged spectra of the Earth system model in IRT computation model for 8 cases; 4 viewing orientation cases with full illuminated phase, and 4 illuminated phase cases in a viewing orientation. Finally the DAS results are compared with previous researching results of radiative transfer method.

  • This paper presents the numerical results of a simulation of the free surface flow around a blunt bow ship model and focuses on the validation of the proposed method with a brief investigation of the relation between the resistance and free surface behavior. A finite volume method based on the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach is used to solve the governing flow equations, where the free surface, including wave breaking,is captured by using a two-phase Level-Set (LS) method. For turbulence closure, a two equation k-${\varepsilon}$ model with the standard wall function technique is used. Finally, the numerical results are compared with the available experimental data, showing good agreement.

  • A direct numerical simulation is performed to analyze the effects of a localized time-periodic blowing on a turbulent boundary layer flow at R $e_{+}$=300. Main emphasis is placed on the blowing frequency effect on near-wall turbulent flow structures at downstream. Wall-normal velocity on a spanwise slot is varied periodically at different frequencies (0.004$\leq$ $f^{+}$$\leq$0.080). The amplitude of periodic blowing is $A^{+}$=0.5 in wall nit, which corresponds to the value of $v_{rms}$ at $y^{+}$=15 without blowing. The frequency responses are scrutinized by examining the phase or time-averaged turbulent statistics. The optimal frequency ( $f^{+}$=0.03) is observed, where maximum increase in Reynolds shear stress, streamwise vorticity fluctuations and energy redistribution occurs. The phase-averaged stretching and tilting term are investigated to analyze the increase of streamwise vorticity fluctuations which are closely related to turbulent coherent structures. It is found that the difference between PB and SB at a high blowing frequencies is negligible.e.e.

  • The objective of present paper is to apply a stereoscopic PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) techiique for measuring the 3 dimensional flow structure of turbulent wake behind a marine propeller with 5 blades. It is essential to measure 3-components velocity fields for the investigation of complicated near-wake behind the propeller. The out-of-plane velocity component was measured using the particle images captured by two CCD cameras in the angular displacement configuration.400 instantaneous velocity fields were measured for each of few different blade phases of $0^{\circ},\;18^{\circ},\;36^{\circ}\;and\;54^{\circ}$. They were ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the propeller wake in the region ranged from the trailing edge to the region of one propeller diameter(D) downstream. The phase-averaged velocity fields show the viscous wake formed by the boundary layers developed along the blade surfaces. Tip vortices were formed periodically and the slipstream contraction occurs in the near-wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component has large values at the tip and trailing votices. With going downstream, the axial turbulence intensity and the strength of tip vortices were decreased due to the visous dissipation, turbulence diffusion and blade-to-blade interaction. The blade wake traveling at higher speed with respect to the tip vortex overtakes and interacts with tip vortices formed from the previous blade. Tip vortices are separated from the wake and show oscillating trajectory

  • For the more accurate prediction on manoeuvring performance of a ship at initial design phase, bare hull manoeuvring coefficients were estimated by RANS(Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) based virtual captive model tests. Hydrodynamic forces and moment acting on the hull during static drift and harmonic oscillatory motions were computed with a commercial RANS code STAR-CCM+. Automatic and consistent mesh generation could be implemented by using macro functions of the code and user dependency could be greatly reduced. Computed forces and moments on KCS and KVLCC 1&2 were compared with the corresponding measurements from PMM(Planar Motion Mechanism) tests. Quite good agreement can be observed between the CFD and EFD results. Manoeuvring coefficients and IMO standard manoeuvres estimated from the computed data also showed reasonable agreement with those from the experimental data. Based on these results, we could confirm that the developed virtual captive manoeuvring model test process could be applied to evaluate manoeuvrability of a ship at the initial hull design phase.

  • Periodic pulsations in the static pressure near turbine surfaces as blade rows move relative to each other is one of the important sources of turbine unsteadiness. The present experiment aims to investigate the effect of the static pressure pulsations on the interaction of film coolant flows from two rows of staggered holes with mainstream and its effect on film cooling heat transfer. Potential flow pulsations are generated by the rotating shutter mechanism installed downstream of the test section, The free-stream Strouhal number based on the boundary layer thickness is in the range of 0.033 - 0.33, and the amplitude of about 10-20%. Measured are time-averaged and phase-averaged velocity variations, pressure variations and temperature distributions of the flow field. Experimental conditions are identified by boundary layer measurements. Injectant behavior is characterized by the measurements of unsteady pressure in the plenum chamber and free-stream static pressure. The film cooling effectiveness is evaluated from the insulated wall temperature measurement. It has been found that bulk flow pulsation provides very large diffusion of the injectants and the effectiveness is significantly reduced by the flow pulsations.

  • We built 7 potential extra-terrestrial planets including the full 3D Earth model with various surface types and 6 planet models, each with uniform surface characteristics. The surface types include ice, tundra, forest, grass, ground and ocean. We then imported these 7 planets into integrated ray tracing(IRT) model to compute their disk averaged spectra and to understand the spectral behavior depending on the geometrical view, illumination phase and seasonal change. The IRT computation show that the 6 planets with uniform surfaces exhibit clear spectral differences from that of the Earth. We then built a phase and seasonal DAS database for the 6 uniform surface planets and used them for parametric spectral decomposition technique to derive the Earth DAS. This computation resulted in the first potential solution to the surface type ratio of the Earth compared to the measured earth surface type ratio. The computational details and the implications are discussed.
