  • The thermomechanical characteristics of NITINOL shape memory alloy were evaluated using DSC with small samples and DMA with three-point bending specimens. The shape memory alloy of 54.4Ni/45.5Ti wt.% was used so that the austenite finish temperature was in the range of $50~100^{\circ}C$. Two types of sample were tested in the experiments corresponding to as-received and annealed conditions. Simple beam bending theory was used to calculate the dynamic moduli of the shape memory alloy. According to the results, a large discrepancy in transformation temperatures was found between DSC and DMA techniques. Annealing treatment was found to suppress the R-phase transformation during cooling and the secondary plateau in the austenite transformation. Such a heat treatment was also significantly influenced to raise the transformation temperatures and the moduli of the shape memory alloy.

  • The phase transformations and the shape memory effect in In-rich Pb alloys and In rich-Sn alloys have been studied by means of X-ray diffractometry supplemented by metallographic observations. The alloys containing 12~15 at.%Pb transform from the ${\alpha}_2$ (fct) phase to the ${\alpha}_1$ (fct) phase by way of an intermediate phase (m phase) on cooling. The results of X-ray diffraction show that the metastable intermediate phase is observed both on cooling and heating, and has a face-centered orthorhombic (fco) structure. It is concluded that the ${\alpha}_1{\rightleftarrows}{\alpha}_2$ transformation is expressed by the ${\alpha}_1{\rightleftarrows}m{\rightleftarrows}{\alpha}_2$ transformation both on usual cooling and heating with the rate more than $8{\times}10^{-3}$ K/s. The $m{\rightleftarrows}{\alpha}_2$ transformation takes place with a mechanism involving macroscopic shear and are of diffusionless (martensitic) type. The temperature hysteresis in the two transformations is 10~13 K between the heating and cooling transformations. The alloys containing 0~11 at.%Sn are -phase solid solutions with a face centered tetragonal structure (c/a > 1) at room temperature, the axial ratio increasing continuously with tin content. The In-(11~15) at.%Sn alloys are mixtures of ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ phases, the ${\beta}$ phase having a f. c. tetragonal structure (c/a < 1). The alloys containing more than 15 at.%Sn are ${\beta}$-phase solid solutions. The In-(12.9~15.0) at.%Sn alloys show a shape memory effect only when quenched to the temperature of liquid nitrogen, although their effect becomes weak and finally disappears after keeping at room temperature for a long time. The ${\beta}{\rightarrow}{\alpha}^{\prime}$ phase transformation is of the diffusionless (martensitic) type, and takes place between 330 K at 12.9 at.%Sn and 150 K at 14.5 at.%Sn. The hysteresis of transformation temperatures on heating and cooling is considerably large (29~40 K), depending on the composition. Both In-Pb and In-Sn alloys showed distinct the shape memory effects.

  • A symmetrical component decomposition scheme utilizing the characteristics of the asynchronous rotational reference frame transformation is proposed in this paper for the extraction of the positive and negative sequence components of distorted three-phase grid voltages. The undesired frequency component can be removed using a specially designed series coordinate transformation and half-cycle delays, where the delay can be controlled by adjusting the frequency of the rotating reference frame. The extracted symmetrical component can then be compensated based on the applied coordinated transformation. The dynamic response of the proposed algorithm is improved when compared to that of conventional methods. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by simulation and experimental results.

  • Ni-Ti shape memory alloy for dental nerve treatment devices was prepared by adding Mo to Ni-Ti alloy to improve flexibility and fatigue fracture characteristics and simultaneously increase corrosion resistance. Surface properties of the alloy were evaluated. Microstructure analysis of the Ni-Ti-xMo alloy revealed that the amount of needle-like structure increased with increasing Mo content. The shape of the precipitate showed a pattern in which a long needle-like structure gradually disappeared and changed into a small spherical shape. As a result of XRD analysis of the Ni-Ti-xMo alloy, R-phase structure appeared as Mo was added. R-phase and B2 structure were mainly observed. As a result of DSC analysis, phase transformation of the Ti-Ni-Mo alloy showed a two-step phase change of B2-R-B19' transformation with two exothermic peaks and one endothermic peak. As Mo content increased, R-phase formation temperature gradually decreased. As a result of measuring surface hardness of the Ti-Ni-Mo alloy, change in hardness value due to the phase change tended to decrease with increasing Mo content. As a result of the corrosion test, the corrosion potential and pitting potential increased while the current density tended to decrease with increasing Mo content.

  • PURPOSE. This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the surface characteristics of a full veneer crown fabricated chairside (CS) from a (Y, Nb)-TZP zirconia block in response to conventional zirconia grinding and polishing. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Zirconia crowns (n = 40) were first prepared and divided into two groups of materials: Labside (LS) and CS, after which each specimen went through a five-step grinding and polishing procedure. Following each surface treatment, surface characteristics were analyzed using confocal laser microscopy (CLSM), average surface roughness (Ra) values were processed from the profile data through Gaussian filtering, and X-ray diffraction pattern analysis was performed to evaluate the monoclinic (M) phase content. Then, a representative specimen was selected for field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), followed by a final analysis of the roughness and X-ray diffraction of the specimens using the independent t-test and repeated measures analysis of variance (RM-ANOVA). RESULTS. In every group, polishing significantly reduced the Ra values (P < .001). There was no significant difference in Ra between the polished state CS and LS. Furthermore, CLSM and FE-SEM investigations revealed that even though grain exposure was visible in CS specimens throughout the as-delivered and ground states, the exposure was reduced after polishing. Moreover, while no phase transformation was visible in the LS, phase transformation was visible in CS after every surface treatment, with the M phase content of the CS group showing a significant reduction after polishing (P < .001). CONCLUSION. Within the limits of this study, clinically acceptable level of surface finishing of (Y, Nb)-TZP can be achieved after conventional zirconia polishing sequence.

  • Spatially resolved liquid volume fractions from a set of line-of-sight laser diffraction measurements for axisymmetric sprays generated from a pintle-type gasoline injector have been tomographically reconstructed by Abel transformation, Fourier transformation and onion peeling method. Spatially resolved liquid volume fractions classified into 32 size groups were translated characteristics of SI engine fuel sprays. These data were also obtained from the phase Doppler measurements for the same sprays. The comparison between laser deffraction measurements and transformation reconstructs more reasonable spatially resolved characteristics for axisymmetric sprays as well as for asymmetric sprays.

  • It is reported that $\varepsilon$ (HCP) and $\gamma$ (FCC) phases of a Fe-17Mn alloy transform to $\alpha'$ phase, which has BCC structure, under a deformation condition. In this study, we investigated the effect of strain-induced-transformed $\alpha'$ phase on sliding wear of the Fe-17Mn alloy that originally had e and y phases. Wear tests of the materials were carried out using a pin-on-disk wear tester at various loads of 0.5N-50N under a constant sliding speed condition of 0.38m/s against glass $(83\%\;SiO_2)$ beads. The sliding distance and radius were loom and 9 mm, respectively. Wear rate of the Fe-17Mn alloy was calculated by dividing the weight loss, measured to the accuracy of $10^{-5}g$ by the measured specific gravity and sliding distance. Worn surface and wear debris of the specimens were examined using an SEM and XRD. During the wear, $\alpha'$ phase of BCC structure was formed by strain-induced transformation when the applied wear load exceeded critical values. The $\alpha'$ phase formed by the strain induced transformation increased the wear rate of the Fe-17Mn alloy.

  • Surface morphologies and fundamental characteristics of molybdenum nitride films deposited by reactive dc magnetron sputtering were studied for application to Cu diffusion barrier. A phase transformation from Mo to $\gamma$-Mo$_2$N phase at 0.5$N_2$ flow ratio.($N_2$/(Ar+$N_2$)) equal to and larger than 0.2, whereas a second phase transformation to $\gamma$-MoN phase at 0.5 N2 flow ratio, With the variation of the N2 ratio the surface morphologies of the films were generally smooth except the cases of 0.2 and 0.3$N_2$ gas rations, where build-up of film stresses occurred. $\gamma$-Mo$_2$N film was found to crystallize at the deposition temperature of 40$0^{\circ}C$. The surfaces of $\gamma$-Mo$_2$N films deposited up to 40$0^{\circ}C$ were smooth, but the film deposited at 50$0^{\circ}C$ had very rough surface morphology. It seems that this was due to the building-up of thermal stresses at the high deposition temperature, which might lead to hillock formation.

  • This paper proposes a speed variable proportional resonant current control method for a single-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM). Due to the electromagnetic characteristics of a single-phase PMSM, negative and zero torques are generated in the part corresponding to the phase difference between the stator current and the back electromotive force. In addition, overcurrent limitation is required because of the low stator resistance and inductance in sensorless operation. When using the vector control for current control of single-phase PMSM under these conditions, processes of coordinate transformation, inverse coordinate transformation, and generation of virtual dq-axis components are required. However, the proposed variable speed proportional resonant current control method does not need the coordinate transformation used for AC motors. In this paper, we have confirmed stable maneuverability by using variable proportional resonant current control algorithm, and proposed sensorless control based on a mathematical model of a single-phase PMSM without a position sensor when reaching a constant speed. The usefulness of the current control method was verified through several experiments.
