  • Single phase induction motor(SPIM) is one of the most widely used type of low power AC motors in the world, especially for domestic or commercial applications where a three phase power supply is not available. Fractional horse power of the SPIM have no starting torque their own. So there are several ways of starting SPIMS. The most common type is the starting capacitor installed in series with the auxiliary winding to increase the starting torque. Also, the auxiliary winding is disconnected once the speed of the motor reaches 70 to 80 [%] of the rated speed. In the conventional systems, this function is conducted by a centrifugal switch. But the mechanical centrifugal switch has many problems such as switch malfunction. This paper presents the starter design of SPIM capacitor starting switch using microcontroller.

  • Low cost motor drives are being sought for high volume energy efficient home appliances. Key to the realization of such low cost motor drives is to reduce the power electronic converter in terms of its components, particularly the active devices, finding the motor with least complexity for manufacturing and a controller that could extract the desired performance from the machine and converter combination. These and other factors such as self-starting, speed control over a wide range and most of all the crowning aspect of a four quadrant operation with bare minimum number of controllable switch (or switches) remain as formidable challenges for low cost motor drive realization. In this paper, a four quadrant switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive with only one controllable switch is realized by using a two-phase machine. The theory and operation of the proposed four-quadrant SRM drive with the proposed control algorithm for its realization are described. The motor drive is modeled, simulated and analyzed to verify its feasibility for self-starting, speed control and for four quadrant operation and the simulation results are presented. Experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed control algorithm for four quadrant control of the SRM drive. The focus of the paper is mainly directed toward the control algorithm for realizing the four-quadrant operation of the two-phase SRM drive with a single controllable switch converter.

  • This paper proposes a CMOS 6-bit phase shifter with low RMS phase and amplitude errors for an X-band phased array antenna. The phase shifter combines a switched-path topology for coarse phase states and a switch-filter topology for fine phase states. The coarse phase shifter is composed of phase shifting elements, single-pole double-throw (SPDT), and double-pole double-throw (DPDT) switches. The fine phase shifter uses a switched LC filter. The phase coverage is $354.35^{\circ}$ with an LSB of $5.625^{\circ}$. The RMS phase error is < $6^{\circ}$ and the RMS amplitude error is < 0.45 dB at 8-12 GHz. The measured insertion loss is < 15 dB, and the return losses for input and output are > 13 dB at 8-12 GHz. The input P1dB of the phase shifter achieves > 11 dBm at 8-12 GHz. The current consumption is zero with a 1.2-V supply voltage. The chip size is $1.46{\times}0.83mm^2$, including pads.

  • We study numerically the temporal evolutions of two orthogonally polarized pulses with width less than 100fsec in all-optical phase-shift switches. We analyze the complicated interplay between a soliton pulse and a higher-order soliton pulse, including the self-and the cross-Raman scattering and the walk-off effect. We also investigate the influence of these interactions on switching performance, including pulse-shape, phase-shift distribution, and contrast ratio. In particular we show that an optical fiber with a typical birefringence (Δn : 2.4$\times$10$^{-5}$ ) can be used with good switching performance in such all-optical switches.

  • A fault tolerant structure and its corresponding control strategy for electromagnetic stirring power supplies are proposed in this paper. The topology structure of the electromagnetic stirring power supply contains two-stages. The fore-stage is the PWM rectifier. The back-stage is the fault tolerant inverter, which is a two-phase three-bridge orthogonal inverter circuit while operating normally. When the power switch devices in the inverter are faulty, the structure of the inverter is reconfigured. The two-phase half bridge inverter circuit is constructed with the remaining power switch devices and DC-link capacitors to keep the system operating after cutting the faulty power switch devices from the system. The corresponding control strategy is proposed to let the system work under both normal and fault conditions. The reliability of the system is improved and the requirement of the electromagnetic stirring process is met. Finally, simulation and experimental results verify the feasibility of the proposed fault tolerant structure and corresponding control strategy.

  • This thesis proposes novel SRP-PWM(Separately Random Pulse Position PWM) techniques and novel two-phase switching pattern applied to four-switch inverter, having various advantages such as operation time decrease that is required for decrease of switching damage, easy of implementation and inverter control at high frequency switching. In this thesis, we wish to confirm that SRP-PWM techniques disperse harmonic spectrum of inverter output current evenly into wide frequency area, that is, side-band of specification frequency. And we confirm the harmonic reduction effect of proposed techniques. Therefore, we will achieve an experiment by IGBT inverter using DSP and will verify the validity of proposed techniques compared with simulation results that use MATLAB/SIMULINK.

  • The transient stability of the synchronous motor is generally improved by damper winding or flywheel. However the synchronous motor at full load will be pulled out from normal operation state when the period of power failure exceeds approximately ten cycle per second. This paper studies the method of improving the stability of synchronous motor by equipping the phase slipping switch between the motor and power source. This paper shows the motor does not pull out, which results from the decrease of power angle to about 30 electrical degrees by means of the switch even when the relatively long period of power failure brings the power angle to some 150 electrical degrees.

  • A ZVT (zero voltage transition) converter for SRM (switched reluctance motor) drives is proposed in this study. By adding a ZVT-chopping switch in the front-end, all switches in the machine side converter can be operated without any chopping to regulate phase current. This allows the use of low-cost and slow-switching devices for the machine side converter. The ZVT circuitry allows high frequency operation of th echopping switch, which enhnaces the system dynamcis and phase-current ripples. High efficiency of th eintegrated converter is obtained due to low switching losses.

  • In this paper, the switching frequency and THD for the reduction instead of traditional single phase inverter using a new type of central arm of the single phase inverter is proposed. The proposed single phase inverter topology, the existing one to add a arm by two-way central switch 3-level output voltage can be raised and, central arm, especially one or two of the switches by using a switch to the diode current switching algorithm was simplified. During the dead time because of this, depending on the direction of the current level does not appear in any other existing level compared to the inverter output voltage level of the THD has the advantage that less can be. The simulation and experimental results verified the validity of the proposed topology.

  • This paper analyses the harmonic pollution to power grids caused by several high-power rectifiers, summarizes the requirements for rectifiers in suppressing grid-side current harmonics and optimizes a new-type of current source PWM rectifier with a hybrid switch. The rectifier with a hybrid switch boasts significant current characteristics and cost advantages in the high-power area. To further enhance the working frequency of the current source rectifier with a hybrid switch for suppressing grid-side harmonics and reducing the inductance size, this paper proposes an optimal control strategy based on space vector. It also verifies that the optimal control strategy based on space vector can reduce the total harmonic distortion of the grid-side current of the rectifier with a hybrid switch via circuit simulation and experimental results.
