This experiment was conducted to compare the effects of vitamin C supplemented in either feed or water on the performance and carcass characteristics of broilers during the hot season. For a 6 week feeding trial, a total of 330 broiler chicks (Ross, 4 d old, average 57 g BW) were alloted to five treatments. The treatments of vitamin C (VC) supplementation were 1) 0 ppm VC, 2) 10 ppm VC in feed, 3) 20 ppm VC in feed, 4) 5 ppm VC in water and 5) 10 ppm VC in water. During the starter phase (0-3 week), chicks on non-supplemented group grew slower (p<0.01) than the supplemented ones, and a similar trend was also noted during finisher stage and the overall stage. Feed intake was significantly (p<0.05) higher in supplemented groups and higher when fed in feed as compared with water during all stages. But feed conversion efficiency was significantly improved in non-supplemented groups compared to supplemented ones in finisher and overall stage. The digestibility of gross energy and ether extract was significantly (p<0.05) higher during starter phase in supplemented, given in feed, and at higher levels as compared with non-supplemented, given in water, and at lower levels, respectively. The bone resistance was significantly (p<0.05) higher in supplemented, supplied in feed groups as compared with their counterparts. Except breast meat, the dressing percentage and abdominal fat were also higher in supplemented group and the dressing percentage was significantly (p<0.05) higher in VC supplemented in feed as to water, but no effect of supplementation was noticed on meat color when compared between the methods of feeding (feed vs. water). The levels of VC in plasma and liver increased linearly, as the level of supplementation both in feed and water increased and it was significantly (p<0.05) higher in feed group as compared with water group. It can be concluded that, retention and availability of vitamin C in feed was higher than those in water, and supplementation of VC during summer was beneficial for poultry.

Feeding traction loads from the public power system may lead to some current and voltage unbalance and consequently affects the operation of its energy-supply system and other equipment connected with it. This paper introduces an analysis of the current unbalance caused by the demands of an electric railway on a public power system. And the results with compensator and without compensator are simulated, and eventually the formula about the current unbalance is suggested. The Scott-connected transformer is adopted in Korea National Railway System. So Scott-connected transformer among the various transformer connection schemes is analyzed in this paper. Also, the formulas about the unbalance and compensating current can be derived by using two parameters(M-phase and T-phase current) of secondary Scott-connected transformer. So, the practical and accurate simulation can be done through dynamic models by using scheduling of traction.

Generally, an electric railroad feeding system has many problems due to the different characteristics in contrast with a load of general three-phase AC electric power system. One of them is harmonics problem caused by the switching device existing in the feeding system, and moreover, the time-varying dynamic loads of rail way is inherently another cause to increase this harmonics problem. In Korea power systems, the electric railroad feeding system is directly supplied from the substation of KEPCO. Therefore, if voltages fluctuation or unbalanced voltages are created by the voltage and current distortion or voltage drop during operation, it affects directly the source of supply. The trainloads of electric railway system have non-periodic but iterative harmonic characteristics as operating condition, because the electric characteristic of the electric railroad feeding system is changed by physical conditions of the each trainload. According to the traditional study, the estimation of harmonics has been performed by deterministic way using the steady state data at the specific time. This method is easy to analyze harmonics, but it has limits in some cases which needs an assessment of dynamic load and reliability. Therefore, this paper proposes the probabilistic estimation method, moments matching method(MW) in order to overcome the drawback of deterministic method. In this paper, distributions for each harmonics are convolved to obtain the moments and cumulants of TDD(Total Demand Distortion), and this can be generalized for any number of trains. For the case study, the electric railway system of LAT(Intra Airport Transit) in Incheon International Airport is modeled using PSCAD/EMTDC dynamic simulator. The raw data of harmonics for the moments matching method is acquired from simulation of the LAT model.

The gas dilution technique was used to evaluate the possibility of estimating the volume of gaseous phase in the rumen from its composition in sheep given rice whole crop silage (RWS) or dent corn silage (DCS) at a level of maintenance (M) or 2 M, and in the course of fasting. The rumen gas composition was determined at 2 and 7.5 h after morning feeding. Nitrogen gas was injected by using an airtight syringe into the rumen immediately after collecting the rumen gas sample as a control. Then rumen gas samples were collected at 5, 10, 20, 40 and 60 min. after injection. Dry-matter intakes were $42g/kg^{0.75}$ and $57g/kg^{0.75}$ for DCS, and $36g/kg^{0.75}$ and $59g/kg^{0.75}$ for RWS, at 1 M and 2 M levels, respectively. Animals ingested both silages about 20% less than expected at 2 M level. The rumen gas composition did not differ significantly between 2 h and 7.5 h after feeding except for $N_2$. Content of $CO_2$ in gas composition was significantly higher at 2 M level than at 1 M (p<0.05) for both RWS and DCS, whereas $CH_4$ showed no significant difference between feeding levels. At both feeding levels, $CO_2$ showed a higher (p<0.05) percentage in DCS than RWS. A dilution technique by using $N_2$ injection is not appropriate for the determination of gas production in vivo, unless the rate of rumen gas turnover is considered. Changes in composition at fasting indicate that the rumen fermentation may reach the lowest level after 72 h fasting for sheep given silage as their sole diet.
The possibility for developing multistage culture system to cultivate larvae by computer simulation with basic experiments was investigated. This culture system was composed of 3 stages. At the 1st stage, Chlorella sp. were cultivated and at 2nd stage Chlorella sp. were supplied to rotifer (Brachionus plicatilis), and rotifer were supplied to larvae at the 3rd stage. In this study, Chlorella sp. were cultivated by batch culture to search for the possibility of continuous feeding to rotifer at 2 nd stage. The maximum specific growth rate ($\mu$$_{max}$) of Chlorella sp. at the logarithmic phase was 0.56 [1/day]. Rotifer was cultivated by fed-batch culture at the feeding rate of Chlorella sp., $10^3$, $10^4$, $10^{5}$ and $10^{6}$ [cells/rotiferㆍh] to search for the relation between the feeding rate of Chlorella sp. and the growth rate of rotifer. As the results, the minimum feeding rate of Chlorella sp. was 2.8 ${\times}$$10^4$ [cells/rotiferㆍday] in the multistage culture system, then the change of rotifer concentration at 2nd stage was simulated by computer. The required amount of rotifer for the growth of larvae was also increased as the growth of larvae. On the 9th day of the culture, the rotifer uptake rate of larvae was 250 [cells/rotiferㆍday]. Based on these basic experiments and results, It was suggested that the possibility of multistage culture system to cultivate larvae with continuous feeding of Chlorella sp. and rotifer.r.
Dietary intake and bioavailability of phorotannins in abalone was investigated after feeding with the phlorotannin-rich brown seaweed Ecklonia stolonifera after 4 days starvation. Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) affords isolation and quantification of the major phlorotannins of 7-phloroeckol and eckol, which were identified by mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance. Abalone growth and feed consumption rates were similar when fed either with the E. stolonifera or the common feed seaweed Saccharina japonica for 20 days. Throughout the feeding period, 7-phloroeckolol was accumulated in the abalone flesh tissue up to an average of 0.58±0.13 mg/g dry weight after 6 days. Eckol was reached to 0.25±0.05 mg/g dry tissue after 6 days, and maintained the level until end of feeding period. By feeding S. japonica as a control, no phlorotannins were detected in the abalone tissues. Both of the abalone, fed with E. stolonifera or S. japonica, had enzymes that decomposed 7-phloroeckol and eckol in muscle tissues, with similar degradation rates of −0.05 or less and −0.05 mg/ml/hr, respectively. Phlorotannins were reduced by constitutive enzymes in abalone tissues. Therefore, value-added abalone containing bioactive phlorotannins can be produced by simply changing the feed to the phlorotannin-rich brown seaweed E. stolonifera 6 days before harvest.

Broiler chickens grow rapidly, and their nutrient requirements change daily. However, broilers are fed three to five diet phases, meaning nutrients are under or oversupplied throughout production. Increasing diet phases improves production efficiency as there is less time in the production cycle that nutrients are in under or over-supply. Nevertheless, the process of administering four or more diets is costly and often impractical. New technologies are now available to blend feed to match the daily nutrient requirements of broilers. Thus, the aim of this review is to evaluate previous studies measuring the impact of increasing feed phases on nutrient utilisation and growth performance, and review recent studies taking this concept to the extreme; precision nutrition - feeding a new diet for each day of the production cycle. This review will also discuss how modern precision feeding technologies have been utilised and the potential that new technologies may bring to the poultry industry. The development of a precision nutrition regime which targets daily requirements by blending dietary components on farm is anticipated to improve the efficiency of production, reduce production cost and therefore improve sustainability of the industry. There is also potential for precision feeding technology along with precision nutrition strategies to deliver a plethora of other management and economic benefits. These include increased fluidity to cope with sudden environmental or market changes, and the ability to alter diets on a farm by farm level in a large, integrated operation. Thus, the future possibilities and practical implications for such technologies to generate a paradigm shift in feed formulation within the poultry industry to meet the rising demand for animal protein is also discussed.
The effects of Bi and Sb additions on the microstructures and casting properties in lead-free Cu-Zn-Sn broze were investigated. (1) When only Bi was added to the bronze, Bi was precipitated on the ${\delta}$ phase of ${\alpha}$ dendrite cell boundary. When Bi and Sb were added together, Bi was precipitated on the ${\delta}_A$ which was the Sb-rich area in the ${\delta}$ phase. (2) The addition of Sb accelerated the formation of ${\delta}$ phase, and when Sb, Bi and Pb were added, Bi and Pb were precipitated as mixed solution in the ${\delta}_A$ phase. (3) The combined addition of Sb and Bi resulted in the suppression of shrinkage due to the complementary effects of the mass feeding of ${\alpha}$-dendrite cluster covered with ${\delta}$ phase and sealing of micro-shrinkage in the ${\delta}$ phase by solidification expansion of Bi.

The modulating effect of feeding sea mustard (Undarina pinnatifida), a fiber-rich seaweed, during initiation and post-initiation phases of colon carcinogenesis was investigated in Sprague Dawley rats. Four groups of animals were exposed to the two weekly injections of a chemical carcinogen, azoxymethane (AOM). Animals were placed on diet containing 15% sea mustard during initiation. post-initiation or initiation+post-initiation phase of carcinogenesis for 10 weeks, and colonic aberrant crypt formation and cell proliferation were compared to those of rats fed semi-synthetic control diet. Results showed that sea mustard feeding significantly reduced the numbers of both aberrant crypts and aberrant crypt foci. Also, labeling indices and proliferation zones were significantly reduced in the colon of the rats fed sea mustard diets. These results indicate that the diet containing sea mustard may decrease the risk of colon cancer development, and a part of such effect may be mediated through both the blocking of initiation and the suppression of cell proliferation in the colonic crypts, although precise mechanisms should be further examined.
The eels, Anguilla japonica, were reared in a tank with daily feeding for up to 97 days, and otoliths were regularly collected for the observation of their microstructures. Microscopic observation of the thin-sectioned otolith under dark field provided significant information on daily growth increments as well as the difference in visual contrast shown by the increments. Clearly defined elver mark formed during the metamorphosis from leptocephalus to the elver can be considered as the origin of the age for the sedentary yellow eel in continental water. The close correspondence between the number of increments outside elver mark and chronological age in days from the beginning of feeding indicates that increment deposition on a daily basis was initiated with the start of feeding for the sedentary yellow eel. Either 7 or 14 daily growth increments were grouped together into 2 alternative units, each distinguished by prominent checks or by visual contrast. The absence of any apparent environmental variations with 7 or 14 day period in the reared tank implies that the phase of the moon could be a zeitgeber for the endogenous rhythm.
